Chapter 69: MOVING ON by Melissa Gaines

Life moves fast, sometimes. A year ago, I moved from my car into a Stop-Gap Housing unit. Today, I’m spending the morning walking through existing units to talk about ideas for new units with the man who owns the properties, Tom Jenkins, and the woman who helped me move from one into my own apartment, Izzy Duffy.

I now work for Habitat Housing, the agency that runs the Stop-Gap Housing program. My part in Stop-Gap Housing deals with grants, funding, and reporting. Izzy does the hands-on work of qualifying families to move in and working with them to transition to long-term housing. She’s been at it since the end of 2024.

Yesterday, Izzy pulled me aside to join a Teams meeting with Tom. We all met last week to look at floor plans for eight new units he’s building on the fourth floor of an apartment project he’s calling Crossroads Phase II.

Today, the three of us are going to walk through existing units—which were, more or less, just fit into existing spaces in various buildings—and make notes on the floor plans for the new ones.

Tom told us that the demolition for the second floor was done and they were starting construction there. Meanwhile, demolition on the third and fourth floors was going quickly. He’s planning to open the second floor by the end of May and have the top two floors done by the end of summer.

Like I said, sometimes life moves fast.
