Chapter 77: CAMPING UN-FUN by Mara Voss

Happy Easter from Mt. Airy, Georgia. Evan and I stopped here to check in and to share a few minutes of private worship to acknowledge this day.

Camping where there are facilities is relaxing. Wilderness camping is an adventure. Wilderness camping in the rain is an ordeal. Neither of us were mad when we got the call from Marilyn Chambers to make our way back to civilization.

We’re traveling on prepaid debit cards and cash until we get to Atlanta. Once we get near the airport, we turn on Shay and Devon’s phones, then make our way to the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta—one night in a five-star hotel, pretending to be the heiress and her boyfriend again.

Monday morning, we continue on, once more playing the role of Shay and Devon who are trying to not be noticed. Back to continual moving, hotel and motel hopping, and periodic drops off the grid.

In other words, back to the original plan. We’ll stay in places that won’t upload our checkins to corporate databases, use Shay and Devon’s IDs as little as possible, and leave a ragged paper trail behind us.

Anyone looking for Shay—Ms. Chambers says there are no known threats, but reminded us that threats probably wouldn’t share their plans on social media—will see where we were from time to time, with gaps in between.

For Evan—I mean “Devon”—and me, we get to have hot showers, comfortable beds, and something we can walk on that doesn’t require cleaning our feet off before putting on socks.

I have a confession to go with that. For reasons beyond my capacity to understand, I’m craving Waffle House. We’ll pay with cash.
