LINE BY LINE by Cindi Curtis Allen

I wish I had some profound ideas to share. I don’t think that’s happening today.

What you get is a report about my coding work. Maybe there’s an analogy there for life.

A good program is created line by line. Some lines are combined into functions, but even the function is built by connecting steps into something that does something.

I’ve been writing a lot of lines of code over the last few days. I think I’m making progress in a good way, getting ever closer to the desired outcome.

If you think of life like that, maybe the thing to do is focus on the line-by-line process that is moving you toward some goal. Not lines, per se, but steps. Little increments of success.

Suppose you want to read the whole Bible. That’s not something you can do in a single sitting. You read chapter by chapter, eventually reaching the goal.

If you want to train for a marathon, you don’t go out and try 26.2 miles. You start by walking around the block and build up from there.

In coding, each line, each function becomes a step toward the final goal. I think there is some insight to be found there. Maybe these verses also apply…

Philippians 3:12–14: Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

Have a wonderful day and take those little steps that add up to something great!

MORE THAN IMAGINED by Roman Lenox

I mentioned in a Patreon comment that I wanted to post about Cindi’s work on my application deployment project. All I can say is that, in just a few days, she’s done far more than I imagined would be possible!

On Friday after lunch she called and gave me a test user ID and password for the development server.

“I emailed you a straw-man client. Launch it and log in.”

The client launched and I just stopped and stared. It looked like it was styled in Cupertino, but with my company colors and logos. It was elegant, but equally intuitive.

I called her immediately. “What have you done!”

“Is that good or bad?” she asked.

“This looks amazing!”

“Have you logged in?”

I told her I’d been so surprised that I forgot. I logged in and it brought up a welcome screen, which I recognized to be the authentication process. It had an option to contact customer support or continue. It even had a little box to promo our apps and services.

I hit continue and the next screen was a menu for the applications the test user was authorized to use.

“So, that’s the login flow. It actually connects to the database to see if the customer is there, but it isn’t pulling which apps the customer can use yet. I just hard-coded the list of apps you’re seeing.”

“This is already way better than what I pictured.”

“I made Michael help me with the visuals. He has a few artist types he uses, so we just took a shot at something. It can be changed easily enough.”

She went on to say she needed the test clients to actually have some rows in their license table. “Right now, the license table is empty. I think maybe nothing copied over when you made the dev environment.”

I’ll spare you the rest of the call, but let me just say that I am blown away. Honestly, that’s a huge understatement.

Be your best you!

Message to Paying Supporters:

Thank you for helping support AGI Stories.

I always consider you—the paid members—when deciding how content is shared.

I believe that most of you who help with the costs do so because you want to support the production process and show encouragement. I’m honored and truly grateful.

At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet costs), expenses run just over $100 per month—so every supporter truly makes a difference.

Nevertheless, I share a lot of content free to all. I believe you understand why. Stories about giving back and helping shouldn’t be exclusive, and key moments need to be accessible for anyone following the stories.

My hope is that sharing a few exclusive photos and small portions of some posts with you serves as a simple expression of gratitude.

With that in mind, again, thank you very much.

Hi Cindy. That's a great analogy about life from your coding work. You're right, coding line by line is like life itself: taking one step at a time and you can get the goal. And Roman, now you know how special Cindy is. Despite of her fight against anxiety, she's been showing great expertise in coding and she's careful about details. I'm glad you're happy about her helping you.

LINE BY LINE by Cindi Curtis Allen. Good morning, Cindi. Yes. it is a great analogy. Step by step to the conclusion. And roadblocks pop up, just like life. Thank you for the verses. They go right along with both life and your project. Thanks for your post and have a good day.

MORE THAN IMAGINED by Roman Lenox. Hello Roman. That is indeed some fast work. And thorough. I can understand why you are amazed. High value people, especially who are good natured, are especially hard to find. You're very lucky. Have fun with further testing. Thanks for your post.
