The mighty powers of coincidence aligned just so that Merritt and I were in the office at the same time. Furthermore, it so happened that the confluence of our schedules coincided with an…interesting scene in one of the small conference rooms.

“I think he giggled,” Merritt said.

“Will Robertson giggling is very unlikely,” I replied.

“It was a man giggling, not Dr. Sinclair.”

I was stumped.

Meredith Sinclair, Will Robertson, and Terrance Davis were sitting in one of the small conference rooms. As we passed by, it was clear that they were discussing the Cloudfall novel.

“Suppose,” Mr. Davis said, “the gyro was spinning around the lift core. Make it fifty percent the diameter of the city…”

Merritt and I stood there pretending we weren’t staring. Then we both saw it.

There was a brief, subtle look. Will glanced away from Mr. Davis at Meredith. She looked back at Will, her lips curled ever so slightly into a smile. She leaned just a little toward him and patted his forearm.

In the context of the conversation, it seemed like nonverbal assent to whatever Mr. Robertson was saying about their cloud cities. In a more open context, it seemed like…
