GOOD MORNING

Okay, I guess you can assume we’re back to sorta-normal because I have one of those stupid thoughts I just have to share.

This one is really bad. But I can’t stop myself.

It’s morning. Jason came out of the shower and said, “Pick a shirt for me to wear.”

Here’s some context. Jason is not a complicated dresser. He has some jeans, some khakis, and some gray pants. He has a bunch of polo-style shirts, a few T-shirts, and some henleys.

More context. Before the wedding he bought two ten-packs of boxer briefs in “assorted colors” according to the Amazon page.

On with the story.

He pitched his towel, went to the dresser, and grabbed a pair of boxers off the top while I went to the closet and picked a blue polo. I turned around to find that the boxers were the same color as the shirt.

Now, here’s the thing… The same thing happened yesterday, but in green.

What’s the chance of that happening!

Now, here’s the stupid part. I thought it out.

He’s got about three pairs of boxers in each of about seven colors. So on any day, there’s a one in seven chance the boxers will be a particular color.

That means that any day he grabs a blue shirt, there’s a one in seven chance his boxers will match.

Two days in a row? Something like one in forty-nine.

So conclusion: about once a week, his shirt and underwear will match! And about every seven weeks or so, it will happen two days in a row.

I warned you.

How’s that for a kickoff to Ailana’s Journal, Season Three?

I’ll be back later with something less goofy. See you then.

NOT BILLABLE BUT… by Min Aurora

Today started as a proof-of-concept run in the mobile clinic. So far, it’s done more to stretch the concept than to prove it.

We drove over the causeway to South Padre Island and parked at Isla Blanca Park Pavilion. Of course we arranged to do this ahead of time.

We are right beside a huge campground and just off the beach.

When we opened the doors, we figured we might have some sick people and minor injuries that we could treat. Remember, we’re going for low- or no-pay services, so if someone has literally no insurance, we can still treat and bill the grant.

Our first patient was not for us. A woman jogged over to tell us her husband was in distress. I went to see, and I’m pretty sure it was a hot appendix. Vanessa radioed for an ambulance.

We had a few cases that fit the mission. One tipped the rapid strep test positive. Got the insurance, did the paperwork, wrote a script, and gave them a sample.

“Fill that and take the whole course,” I said.

The other was a sunburn. Got the insurance, did the paperwork, gave an over-the-counter NSAID and a sample tube of lotion. And a little free advice.

Now, I’m putting a bandage on a boo-boo. Mom is delighted. The kid thinks this is cool. I asked Vanessa what to do about billing.

“Girl…” Vanessa said. “We’re not billing for a Band-Aid.”

We debated for a few seconds and did get the kid’s name and consent to treat. Vanessa called our malpractice carrier to discuss how to handle this in the future. I’ll let you know what we find out, but today, we gave away a Band-Aid, and I got a hug from a happy mother out of the deal.

CHANGE THE LABEL by Josh Ryan

Things in the Ryan condo were a little busy this morning. I had some calls to make, and my mom and sister kept texting to say how happy they were about the visit yesterday. Geoni had some must-finish edits to do for one of her journals.

About an hour ago, we hit a stopping point, so I checked in on Kel. “You getting hungry?”

“Yeah… yes, sir. Can I help make something?”

He followed me to the kitchen, and Geoni was digging in the freezer. “Chicken strips? Salad?”

I said that sounded good, and the three of us knocked it out pretty quickly. As we ate, I told Geoni my sister wanted some of the pictures from the visit.

When we finished, she went to the sofa, and Kel and I did the dishes. When we got to her, she was looking at pictures.

“Kel, I made a folder with all the ones you took. It will be interesting to see how your style changes over time.”

“I liked the Canon,” Kel replied. “I get the concept of controlling everything and all that. I have a lot to learn about why and what.”

Geoni smiled. “It comes with practice. Like everything. But here’s a folder, and I’ll make folders inside it for each set you take. We can go through it and delete whatever you don’t want to keep.”

Then it happened.

“Hey,” Kel said, looking at the screen on Geoni’s laptop. “Can we change the label?”

She looked up. “Which label?”

“The name of my folder.”

Geoni looked back at me, then at Kel. “Change it?”

He pointed again. “Kel Hale.”

Geoni didn’t say anything. I think I held my breath.

Kel shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal, even though it was. “Maybe… make it Kel Ryan?”

I heard Geoni gasp a little.

Kel went on. “It would just make it easier if I started off with Kel Ryan and didn’t have to go back and tell everyone I have a new name. And that’s where we’re going, right? I mean, if that’s okay before it’s official.”

I just said, “It’s more than okay.”

Geoni changed the name of the folder.

Beyond The Screen…

Here’s my “AI… What?” Moment of the month!

While I don't use AI to write the stories, I do use it for some of the research-based information (as you do) such as the geological composition of the seabed around Key West Florida.

And I've said before I use it for the captions and accessibility alt descriptions of the images. I also run every story through for grammar, spelling, accuracy, and clarity.

Here's the prompt I use for that:

For the draft that follows, check for spelling, grammar, accuracy and clarity. Show all changes in bold and in a list using this format:Original: <original text>Recommended: <recommended text><reason for change>

For today's posts, I was doing captions and alt descriptions for and ChatGPT wrote something like this:

“Caution-You’re watermark on the final image still reads Kel Hale, not Kel Ryan.”

I got over the shock and reminded it that there was a long waiting period for adoption.

It pushed back—something like…

“After the Chicago visit, he might be feeling more like family and might suggest the label gets changed.”

I pushed back—what are you thinking?

ChatGPT proposed a scene in which Kel says, something like:

“can we just go with Kel Ryan even if it’s not official yet?”

Well now…

The scene above is derived from ChatGPT's idea. I probably used about 1/2 of the three or four sentences it came up with, but the impetus for the scene came from AI. Every passing day, ChatGPT gets more and more useful.

Here's another example. In the mobile clinic scene, I was trying to word something… I first typed, "Fill that and don't forget to take the whole bottle of antibiotics."

It felt clunky, so I edited the ending to, "…take the whole course."

I forgot to delete the "don't" and ChatGPT wasn't happy.

Original: “Fill that and don’t take the whole course,” I said.

Recommended: “Fill that and take the whole course,” I said.

Corrects a medically important wording issue. For strep, antibiotic regimens are prescribed as a defined course, and patient guidance emphasizes completing the full course. (Citation: CDC)

I stared at that for a while, I promise!

Stepping back from the AI shock and going back to Kel and the idea he'd be ready to change the name on the folder on Geoini's laptop, I decided to just go with it.

From a story point of view, it makes it easier on casual readers who might be confused later after getting used to him being Kel Hale. From an image creation point, I can change the watermark now and be done with it.

And in the vernacular of any of the Island Kids, I’m sort of low-key still spinning that ChatGPT did that without being asked.

Be your best you!

STUDIO AFTERNOON by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m standing in the street in front of our condo pretending to wait impatiently for Jason to back the Honda out of the garage.

We’re heading to the studio. This morning Jasmine told us she’d booked Jason to shoot a pile of SWAG from that company he does work for.

“And there’s a guy who’s new at a bank who wants a headshot for his LinkedIn page. He’s coming at 4:00. Hope that’s okay.”

Honestly, it feels right. Back from the honeymoon and into life. But now, it’s different. You know what I’m thinking, so… you can create the rest of this paragraph on your own.

Life goes on. There’s work to do, and all that.

And there better be a beach coming our way pretty soon! I’ll look at the weather forecast and start planning.

I’m going to the studio with Jason for one reason. I’m not ready to let him out of my sight. I’ll work from there and watch him work.

Thanks for all the support and encouraging comments. Yes, we’re very happy and feel very blessed.

Be your best you!

GOOD NIGHT

Hey friends, Jason and I are at Grapevine Cafe. I’ve stood in this same place for a photo once before, but we’re here this time under slightly different circumstances.

And this time, I’m not talking about being married. From now on, you can just assume that’s part of the situation.

What’s different this time is that we have gift cards. The man Jason photographed had them and didn’t want to use them. As a gratuity of sorts, he gave them to us.

Boom! You bet!

Well, tomorrow is Friday, and the weekend follows. Funny how that happens every week!

But Jason and I will probably be working Saturday. Today’s studio work didn’t bring anything to an end. It actually created more work. And paying jobs are a good thing, right?

I was able to help a little, but mostly, I banged on the computer. Don’t tell anyone, but I made notes from our honeymoon trip to put together a little beginner’s guide to yacht life. Of course I drew from all the Savannah’s Charm memories, too.

The forecast for both Friday and Saturday is sunny or partly cloudy. We’re working on Saturday, so I’m wondering what to do on Friday. Any suggestions?

May changes in your life reveal new and better ways to live, to be happy, and to become the best version of you possible.

Good night.

GOOD MORNING. Good morning, Ailana. Ha! That is fine for a kickoff to Season Three. Pick me out a shirt. Jason actually sounds like every other married guy on the planet. His wardrobe sounds the same. Thanks for the details. I love the matching. Not goofy at all. You are married. That makes it cute. Thanks for your amusing post. Have a great day.

NOT BILLABLE BUT… by Min Aurora. Hello Min! Yeah, I'd like to know how you add 1 Band-Aid to the summary of charges. But...love the Mobile Clinic! That will definitely help to expand your reach into the community. Nicely done, Vanessa and...uh, staff. Thank you, Min, for the progress snapshot. Good luck with this endeavor.

CHANGE THE LABEL by Josh Ryan. Hey Ryan. Thanks for the update. But what exactly were you and Kel doing while Geoni was hard at work editing stuff? You were maybe "phoning it in"? Just curious.

Common Hamster

Beyond The Screen… Um. I like that watermark on the image until it's official. Shows intention, but that you are not there yet. Take the whole course is what I'm always told. Didn't know there were CDC instructions. Also did not geological composition of the seabed around Key West Florida. Thanks for the bit of tid. It was actually fascinating. And the very sort of thing Ailana would post. So, thanks for going the extra mile.

STUDIO AFTERNOON by Ailana Geven Keller. I totally get not letting him out of your sight yet. That is so cute! Have a great afternoon, you two.

GOOD NIGHT. Beginner's guide to yacht life sounds useful...and fun to put together. Make sure you have a chapter on bilge pumps. You're both working on Saturday? I'm going to assume you will post and enlighten us. As for Friday night, I think you should hit Pirate's Landing. As much as I love the Kraken, I don't recall ever seeing a post from you or Jason about going to the Landing. Gather everyone around and take in the fun and friendship.

Oh! Thanks for the bonus Patreon image.
