I know… I know… I said I was going to schedule everything for the same ≈ 4:00 a.m. NYC time… However, there will be times when I don't get to schedule something in advance—like this one. I still want it to post today!
I'm sure just hitting the post button now makes sense, right?
Chapter 115: LOOKING NORTH by Evan Calder
We’re at the Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida. Pretty cool, and I’ll come back to this.
Last night Mara asked, “Where to next?”
I told her I thought we should follow the coast the other way until we couldn’t. We have to go back north—which is not really bad news.
Going back means we get another pass at everything. We can check in from places we never mentioned, stop where we were too busy to stop, and look harder at things we mostly admired through a windshield the first time.
Along the way are a lot of cool Gulf towns, New Orleans, Galveston and Houston…you get the idea. We’ll have to make some deviations just to keep the Shay/Devon trail from being predictable, but…
Anyway…the Hemingway Home and Museum…
It's a place people know by name, but in person it feels less like a monument and more like a house that got old in the open air and stayed interesting. The walls are pale and solid, the shutters look built for heat and light, and the shaded verandas make the whole property feel slower than the street outside.
You can see why a writer would have liked the separation between the bright island and the cooler rooms. The place carries its history without trying too hard. There are gardens, the famous cats, and that sense that a lot of sentences got started here before anybody realized they would last.
Mara liked the quiet of it. I liked that it still felt attached to the island around it instead of floating above it as some precious thing.
That may be the best version of travel. You go somewhere because it is known, and then you find out it still belongs to the people, weather, and habits that made it matter in the first place.
So yes, now we are looking north. We have to go back the way we came. But that also means there is still more coast to follow, more places to notice, and probably more than one stop we missed the first time because we were too busy trying to get all the way down here.

Message to Paying Supporters:
Thank you for helping support AGI Stories.
I always consider you—the paid members—when deciding how content is shared.
I cannot say how much your support helps. Each of your contributions adds up and helps defray the cost of producing content. As of now, between donations here and Instagram monetization, most of the software costs are covered. Not quite all of them, but most…
Because of your generosity, I am able to keep going.
With that in mind, again, thank you very much.
