Today, the final chapters of a long, long slow-burn reveal were published. I told one of you who reads and comments regularly that I was nervous excited.
Starting in December, I was planning toward May 30, 2026 (though at the time I didn’t have an exact reveal date.) I do not recall what prompted the question, but at some point I asked, “Whatever happened to Ailana’s mother, Melinda Amos Geven?”
I could have answered that by saying she was deceased, but I let it cook.
At the same time, I was looking ahead to Ailana and Jason’s wedding, and the idea of kids came up. Jasmine was already in the story, arriving in adulthood from a less-than-perfect foster system. I decided Josh and Geoni would adopt and Clay and Sasha would have one of their own. This becomes relevant later.
December was coming to an end, and the question about Melinda was still rattling. I came up with the idea of the half-sister.
The First Wrong Answer
A tragic math error occurred.
On January 3, 2026, I introduced readers to the character I had decided, at least on that day, was Ailana’s half sister. I even worked up the backstory!
Here is a small segment of it:
Mark met Melinda in Las Vegas, Nevada, in August of <had to change this>. He had a cousin who took him out for a four-day weekend. He met Melinda there. She was working for tips serving tables at a casino. She also did a little side-work… They called it love at first sight, but it was more like an escape for her.
The half sister was going to be Kaylee Branch, who was written to have a two-year-old son, Hudson.
Kaylee’s reveal came on January 3, 2026. A few days later, I double checked the numbers.
Melinda left Ailana and Allen in 2009 and went to Las Vegas. That would mean Kaylee could not be 23. At best, she’d be 16, meaning Hudson would have been born when Kaylee was 14.
FALSE!!
I kept Kaylee, of course. Everyone kind of liked her!
Back to 2010… I still wanted a half sister…
Let’s go!
Emily Becomes the Answer
On January 20, 2026, Emily’s first reveal happened. After the second chapter posted—her sitting on the cardboard box—I knew from reader reactions that this was going to be an epic arc.
For a couple of days, I toyed with the idea that Josh and Geoni might adopt her. That seemed to shift the focus away from Ailana, so I backtracked and decided they would adopt someone different.
I also believe the Josh, Geoni, and Kel arc is valuable, both as part of the larger story and on its own. There already have been—and will continue to be—powerful moments for the Ryans as they become a family in the ordinary, daily ways that matter most.
But—unapologetically—I wove the two arcs together, letting the adoption arc become a distraction from Emily’s running-away-from-horror arc.
The next big disruption to the plan came when I researched how long it would take for Josh and Geoni’s adoption to be finalized. Yikes! I hedged a little, assumed vast wealth—the Ryans—could speed things up, and decided it could be just under six months.
Various timelines were considered. I decided that, to honor Kel’s adoption, I’d have it happen first. The wedding deserved its own spotlight, so that would happen next. Then Emily would arrive.
I think, had she come earlier, everything after would have been cheated.
At that point, I realized something really useful for Ailana’s character arc. What emerged for her was an enormous tension built around self-doubt:
I don’t even know if I can be a good wife—but I’m going to try!
Now, how can I possibly be responsible for a teenager—but I’m going to try.
Solving the Logistics
The next thing I thought of was the Jasmine-meets-Emily scene: the cops showing up with Emily. I thought this would be a cinematic key moment where the climactic reveal—I'm Ailana's sister—would happen
This triggered a lot of questions:
Why did the cop pick her up?
My first thought was that Emily was walking across the causeway. However, that did not seem like a realistic or safe everyday choice, plus there’s a free bus that loops through Port Isabel and South Padre Island.
Why did the cop just drop her off with Jasmine?
I’ll spare you a zillion details, but I settled on a young, friendly new officer trying to protect and serve. But there couldn’t be a missing person report! No problem—I’d already decided what Melinda was going to do, so she definitely wouldn’t call it in.
Back to how the cop first encountered her…
Let’s get to the solutions…
Brooks was created to be the friendly public-space figure who would first see Emily in distress.
Officer Lopez was created to be the young, teen-aware officer doing a decent job.
I spent several chapters proving that Brooks was friendly and genuinely interested in meeting teens who came in (e.g. Mateo and Jenna).
I also showed that Officer Lopez has a history of being at Whataburger.
So, when Emily wandered in trying to read a map, Brooks’s response was already an established pattern. Then, when Officer Lopez came in as the teen-friendly cop, no one would be surprised.
I also wanted Officer Lopez not to linger once she dropped Emily off with Jasmine. To create a little “moment,” I had her appear in the beach scene with Micah and Hudson: She’s new. She’s just doing her job. Sorry it’s awkward…
Since “African American residents make up approximately 0.5% to 1.1% of Cameron County, Texas’s population” (Google), and since SPI is almost certainly less than that… Jasmine would be pretty sure that Officer Lopez would remember the incident.
Why She Waited
The last problem I faced was this: Why on earth would Emily stick around? Why would she wait for the school year to end?
I answered that with two details.
First, she had to work at the 7-Eleven long enough to save up money for the ticket.
By the way—I researched how a minor could travel unescorted. I was actually surprised that it could happen so easily!
Second, I decided that, in her 16-year-old mind, finishing 10th grade was important, especially since she had a teacher who was encouraging her.
The final blip was fairly small. I revisited the calendars and found that Emily, Brooks, Mateo, and Gabe all ended school on May 22.
Remember the part where Ailana’s wedding got moved back a week? Yeah, that’s why!
I’d already decided that, as soon as school was out, Melinda would try to traffic Emily. I adjusted the timeline by a week to make it all fit.
Looking Ahead
Let me end by thanking anyone still reading all this. There are a lot more little details that I skipped through in this discussion, so feel free to ask questions! This could be fun!
Let me further say that, as much planning as there has been leading up to today… This is just the beginning!
Ailana now faces a future as a brand-new wife who is suddenly the guardian—in Texas, conservator—for a teen girl who has fended for herself for years just to survive.
