Chapter 124: YOU NEVER KNOW by Hannah Madison
The Big Apple… New York City, home to eight and a half million people, and every one of them has a story.
My story today includes a moment I can’t really explain. Honestly, it was shocking. And weird. And unsettling.
I’ll reiterate—I can’t explain it.
A moment ago, I was on the sidewalk waiting for the light. A woman walked up and stopped right beside me.
She snapped her head to look at me. “I know what kind of woman you are.”
I looked at her, a complete stranger, and assumed she was talking to someone on Bluetooth.
She looked at me again. “Don’t look at me that way. Your kind are all the same.”
I responded, “I’m sorry… Do you know me? I don’t recognize you?”
She actually snorted. “I don’t have to know you. I know your type.”
The light changed and she marched off. I did not.
I watched her go across the street, turn down the sidewalk, and keep going. She never looked back. I never saw her look at anyone else or speak.
There’s still a tiny chance she was on Bluetooth. Maybe AI glasses or something. Unlikely.
The better chance is that I’ll never know what was going on.
I waited for her to be out of sight before I crossed. I called Merritt about it, and he agreed it was crazy.
Then, as he does, he offered grace. “We rarely know what’s going on in other people’s lives that makes them act like they do. I hope she gets through whatever’s going on.”
I love that guy.
The odds are in my favor. There’s about a 0.000012% chance I’ll randomly meet her again. A bit higher if you just count Manhattan, of course.
Moving on… I have a life to live.

Chapter 125: SYSTEM OFFLINE by Rebecca Flint
Today, I’d like to be giving an update saying how great things are and telling you about the wedding Paul and I have planned. I’m going to go a different route based on Paul’s post yesterday.
First, the wedding will still happen on the 27th. It will be different from what we were planning. It will be very simple, with just our Crossroads friends.
By July 1, Paul will be out of his rented home and will have moved into mine—ours, by that point. That is a very, very good thing.
We’ve missed a month of salary from Pay It Forward Society. Our small consulting business is promising, but it is not yet sufficient to keep us from tapping savings for July. We’re okay with that.
As of right now, as far as we can tell, the Pay It Forward Society is offline. Emails are not going through. Server not found. I even got Jacob Brown to poke around like he did before—the ping isn’t going through, and traceroute doesn’t resolve.
The Society is missing, and so are the salary payments to Paul and me and the rent payments to Tom.
As Paul said, Tom’s not worried, for now. He doesn’t even want to tell the young people we recruited that anything is going on.
You might remember that Will Robertson at NYC SysCo agreed to serve as an advisor to us—he even went to Africa with us. Paul, Tom, Will, and I had a Teams meeting. Will is of the opinion that we need to tell them so they are not caught off guard. Tom acquiesced but reiterated that he figured it was just a glitch and would work out.
After Will left the call, Tom offered to gift us our July rent as a wedding present. Paul told him we’d be overjoyed.
I teared up and just nodded.
We’re hanging on, for now. But we don’t know what we’re hanging on to.
Be your best you!
