Chapter 128: BROOKLYN MELTDOWN by Mara Voss

Let’s just say my idea of sleeping in today was abruptly changed. Evan and I are at Marco Island Lakeside Inn. The plan is to do a “we were here” social media post in a couple of days. We’re leaving before checkout time. Etcetera and all that.

Last night, the group text messages were abuzz. The Pay It Forward Society is MIA, and that’s created some big discussions. Without Pay It Forward to pay the rent, everyone on that team is making adjustments.

That makes no difference to Shay and Devon or to the guards living there. Their rent isn’t connected to The Society.

But those people are Shay’s friends now. The upheaval left her in nothing less than a tizzy. She sent me a message from her burner phone to mine. “Text the group saying you’re sorry for the troubles.”

I texted back: “Okay. Will do.”

And I did.

I woke up to Marilyn Chambers calling my burner phone.

“Hey, Shay wants to offer to pay everyone’s rent for June. Turns out Tom has that covered. Shay asked, what about July? That’s on the table. Shay has liquid assets well in excess of ten people’s rent, so she could write a check, make a transfer to Tom… whatever.”

“Yes ma’am,” I said. “I assume you want me to text something to the group chat?”

“Possibly. I wanted to give you a heads-up. She’s having secret meetings with everyone—you may or may not know, but there’s a girl living there who hasn’t been read in on the secret identity swap.”

“Yes ma’am,” I said again.

Ms. Chambers let a few seconds pass. “So, stand by until you hear from me. Shay’s going to talk to everyone involved and make the offer, but if it happens, you’ll need to text the group and let it play out that way. Probably some staged phone calls…you get the idea.”

“Yes ma’am,” I said. Then I added, “May I add a thought?”

“Certainly.”

“Shay’s wonderful. If I weren’t pretending to be her, I think I’d like to be her friend.”

“I’ll tell Carol you said that. She’ll be pleased.”

So, let me close this with my reaction to it all.

Wow.

Chapter 129: FOCUSING by Emma Knox

Sorry, but I’m keeping this one real short. I got about two weeks of school left and I have to focus.

I guess you know everything is sideways with The Pay It Forward Society. I have faith that I’ll be all right, and I am even thinking what’s next is probably better for me in the long run.

But I just need to dig in and get done with school.

I’ll get the words to say figured out, but for now, just believe me when I say I think it’s all going to work out for the good. Truly, I believe that.

I have to get this paper done. Last thing, really, besides going to class and taking the exams.

See you next time.
