GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Taking care of Emily is going to require more coffee, I think. She showed up last night after playing video games with Kel and Mateo.

“Did you get the text that we were on our way home?” she asked.

I looked at my phone. “I got it. I replied, but I didn’t hit send.”

We chatted about the day in general, then—question time. “Can I ask something?”

“Of course.”

“What would you think if I dated a Hispanic boy?”

At that point, my brain probably looked like a cartoon meltdown with explosions, words, question marks, and flying chickens! Date? It’s been a week! Who? Etc.!

“Slow down,” I said. “Date? What’s going on?”

“Saturday, Gabe said that some people are against mixed-race relationships. Mateo is trying to get an idea of how true that is.”

More explosions and flying chickens. “Mateo wants to date you, and you’re trying to find out if I approve?”

She looked at me like I was crazy. “No, not me… It’s, like, hypothetical. Like, what’s the chance the girl he likes would get in trouble or something?”

Less explosions. More flying chickens. Maybe some cows in a cyclone. “Did you google it?”

She blinked and looked at me as if I had just reminded her that breathing was a good thing.

We looked it up and she wasn’t overly happy with the results.

“So, what's up with this?” She pointed at the screen. “Like almost everyone says it’s fine for other people, but then about 12% say no for family members?”

I looked at where she was pointing. “I suppose some people figure if it doesn’t affect them, they don’t care.”

“Twelve percent…” she said. “What is that, one out of what?”

“Slightly less than one in eight,” Jason said.

She rolled her eyes. “I guess he’s got a seven out of eight chance things will work out, then.”

We talked about it longer, arriving at the same place. She had no specifics, but figured it had to be Jenna or Brooks.

The subject changed, and she showed us pictures from the boat trip with Sasha and Clay we hadn’t seen.

Things move fast! Dating? I still need to take her shopping for clothes!

SHIFTING GEARS by Ailana Geven Keller

I just thought of something. In a world of automatic transmissions, is the expression “shifting gears” becoming antiquated? I suppose we could say Forward and Reverse still count…

Anyway… I’m shifting gears…

I’ve edited, polished, tweaked, and created sentences, paragraphs, and entire essays this morning. I even did some fiction ghostwriting.

Now, I’m waiting on Jason before we head to Sea Glass for lunch and then meet some clients in the studio. This session will be cute and fun.

We’re doing engagement photos for a couple who lives in Brownsville. Jason will run the camera. I’ll help with styling and poses. They booked an hour in the studio, and then we’re going outside for some location shots. Just a typical work day for a photographer!

We’re taking Kel and Emily along. Kel has a growing interest in photography. Emily said she’d like to come, just so she won’t be stuck around the condos.

Quick additional comment. The lawyers called earlier about Friday’s hearing. They said everything is set and that, based on all the evidence, this should be a formality. I’m her only blood relative, and I’m not a wanted felon like our mother is.

That’s it for now. See you tonight!

COOKING AN IDEA by Vanessa Lenen

I’m in the middle of a scheme. It’s good. Trust me?

I just got off the phone with Amir—Dr. Kumar at the clinic. Before that, I was on the phone with someone else.

I wanted to get Amir thinking before I laid out the details. You know… get him interested and thinking about all the possibilities.

“Dr. Kumar…”

“Dr. Lenen… What’s up?”

We do that doctor-doctor thing mostly as a joke.

“I know you’re busy, but I wanted to plant the seed of an idea…”

“Should I be afraid?”

“Not at all… What if Shoreline had access to another doctor… PRN… who could help out with overnight care and also be part of the mobile clinic?”

“How would we afford that?”

“Trust me… I think it could happen with very little additional expense…” Then I pretended I was busy. “I need to go, but I just wanted to land that idea for you to think about. Min says it’s a no-brainer. Talk soon.”

Was that overly devious?

JOURNAL MOMENTS

Tuesday, like every day for the people of Ailana’s Journal, included many meaningful moments and segments of life that bridge the past to the future. A few of them are shared here.

MORNING SICKNESS: STILL GROSS

Sasha Everett, about nine weeks into her pregnancy, woke up and urgently rushed to the bathroom.

It didn’t happen every day. But it happened today.

BREAK’S OVER

Sofia Torres had been on the phone with Jasmine Banks, going over orders so the Southeast Texas Apparel factory could plan production for the rest of the week.

But the conversation had drifted away from work, and Jasmine had started talking with her about coming to South Padre Island to visit and hang out. Sofia was amazed—and delighted—by the conversation.

They were discussing what Sofia might like to do and trying to decide which day would be best. One thing led to another, and Jasmine started telling her about some of her and Micah’s friends—the Branch family.

Sofia looked up as Marcus Reed, one of the other workers at the factory, stopped in the doorway. “Hold on, Jasmine… one second.”Marcus smiled. “You still talking to Micah’s wife?”Sofia nodded.

“Boss, we need you back on the line. We’re getting backed up.”“Oh…” Sofia nodded. “Jasmine, can I call you after five?”

I LIKE IT HERE

Dan Mercer hurried home from work to have dinner with his daughter, Jenna. It was something he did whenever possible—and when she was available. Raising her had been the focus of his life. Now, she was sixteen, going on grown.

Dinner was simple. Dan grilled chicken while Jenna microwaved potatoes and made a salad.

After dinner, Dan sat down to pay some bills while Jenna cleaned up. She closed the dishwasher and turned to Dan.

“Dad… I like it here. I’ve got some good friends already.”Dan turned and looked back. “I like it here, too.”

“Can we stay? At least until I finish high school. It’s only two years.”Dan nodded. “I can’t promise, but I’ll definitely try.”

Message from AGI-Stories…

I sort of like the Journal Moments idea… What do you think? I believe this will work to check in with more of the Journal people more often.

The win for me doing it this way is that it saves the time of creating (in today's case) three additional posts on other platforms. I can make just one with all three episodes.

As always, your feedback is welcome!

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Today has come to its end. Although there was no beach time today, it was otherwise pretty great.

Today felt like what I imagine a normal day as a wife and guardian-sister would be like. And I know “normal” and “guardian-sister” are an uncommon combination, but just go with it…

Emily was easygoing, helpful, thoughtful, and appreciative. She and Kel seem to get along like I’d guess typical brothers and sisters get along, except without competing or bickering.

Jason was steady, solid, fun, interesting, and everything wonderful. We work together very well. I think we’ve got a rhythm going in the studio.

I direct the models and show them what I mean.. Meanwhile, he’s catching moments—not only the shot I’m trying to set up, but the ones that organically happen in between.

We’ve worked out some sort of ESP when setting up equipment. He passes me cords before I even know it’s time to plug something in. I hand him the softbox just as he turns around after tightening the light mounts.. Things like that… Working seamlessly in concert…

Life happened today. It felt good, normal, and satisfying. I felt needed, loved, helpful, and cared for. I got hugs from Emily and kisses from Jason. We shared time, ideas, and meals, and we worked together on meaningful activities.

Can anyone ask for much more than that? I don’t mean that flippantly, and I know it’s a soft generalization. But today, it was more than enough for me.

May all of your days leave you feeling loved, needed, helpful, and cared for.

Good night.
