Chapter 139: MEMPHIS BOUND by Emma Knox
First off, I don’t know if this story is about me or Shay Ryder. I guess I’ll start with the me part.
Merritt called a girl named Jordan in Memphis and everything got really busy. On Friday after lunch, Paul and Rebecca are flying Merritt, Hannah, Noah, and me to Memphis for a long weekend.
Over the weekend, Jordan and her boyfriend, Carter, are going to help me and Noah find a place to live after the wedding. We got some addresses off Zillow. I called Jordan—on account she told me to—and shared them with her.
She says they’re fine. “Sort of off the beaten path. Eads is right outside the city, but it has sort of a country feel to it.”
This is so crazy!
On Monday, Paul and Rebecca are going to work out final arrangements with the church where the weddings will be. Noah’s going to interview for a job with an ambulance company that has an office in an area called Wolfchase, just down US 64 from Eads.
Enough about me…
Shay’s paying for all this. Everything for our trip this weekend, plus both weddings, plus everyone going down for it.
I was talking to Hannah about it, and she said, “Emma, people like you and me think in thousands of dollars or sometimes hundreds of thousands. Shay’s family operates in the billions… actually tens of billions or more. Blue Water Express is just the most famous company they own.”
Now, I got to thinking about that and Shay. For most of her life, she lived in that world. But if you ask her, she was never happy until she moved here to Crossroads and made friends with us. Especially Devon, of course.
So if you ask me, there’s something there. Something about what really matters.
Of course, I thanked Shay, except I had to mouth the words and call her Mara because Liza was right there. She played along.
“I can’t wait to see Memphis! I’m sure your friend, Shay, was happy to make all this happen for everyone. She must love you all a lot.”
Well, that’s where I’ll close. Thanks for reading my story.
