Chapter 143: VISIT THE BLUFF CITY by Rebecca Flint

Paul and I are here in Memphis, the Bluff City, for two main reasons. First, he flew the jet, and I kept him company. Second, we’re making arrangements with the church for the weddings.

Since it is Saturday and the church offices are closed, we are sightseeing. That is code for looking at things between meals.

Breakfast at Brother Juniper’s? Check!

Next up, lunch at a place Michael Allen says is a must: Soul Fish.

We’re going to the one in Midtown on Cooper, but that will be a little later. As you can see, we are at FedExForum, where the Memphis Grizzlies play.

We’ve also visited Tom Lee Park down on the riverfront.

Hannah and Merritt are going out to Bartlett to spend the afternoon with Cindi and Michael Allen. Emma and Noah are with Jordan Warner and Carter Ellis, looking at rental places in their price range. Both Jordan and Carter grew up in the area, so that process should go well.

Paul wants me to add that the weather is HOT! Emma, who grew up south of here in Vicksburg, scoffed.

“It’s barely going to hit 90°F!”

Paul also wants me to add that 90°F is over 32°C, which violates some of the King’s and Parliament’s sensibilities back in London.

That’s about all from here. Look for more from the others soon.

Chapter 144: HOUSE HUNTING by Emma Knox

Well, we can mark this one off the list as a no. More to come later, but I want to talk about two other things.

First, I want to say I really like Jordan and Carter. They’re both college graduates and seem very smart, but they talk like I’m used to hearing. They both grew up around here, and they say ‘y’all’ with the right accent. I’m sure they write differently, but my ears like how they sound.

Now, of course, they’re real nice, too.

Second, I want to address something important.

The fact of the matter is, living in the Memphis area—call it Shelby County—is a whole lot easier if you have something to drive. Now, after all these months of having Pay It Forward Society cover rent, Noah’s saved up some money and made some repairs on his 2016 Honda Civic. It’s in real good shape, and the plan is he’ll drive it down next week ahead of the wedding.

Well, I talked to Daddy, and he told me that my Cousin Clay and his wife, Lenna, still have his 1999 F-150. Clay’s kept it up and driven it a little. Daddy wants me to go get it and keep it as a wedding present.

Once we get done looking at houses today, Carter’s gonna take us down to Clarksdale to pick it up.

Plus, there’s a famous place there called the Crossroads, where the story says Robert Johnson sold his soul so he could be good at playing the blues.

Right there beside it is a famous little restaurant called Abe’s Bar-B-Q, so we’ll eat there just for the fun of it.

If we can’t get a house worked out by the time we leave Monday, Carter says we can park my truck at his parents’ house where he lives.

So, that’s a lot going on! I just wanted to let everyone know we’re going to be just fine as far as being able to get around.

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading my story.

Chapter 145: NEW FRIENDS by Hannah Madison

Merritt and I have spent the afternoon in Bartlett with Michael Allen and Cindi Curtis Allen. Merritt knew Michael from when he lived in Memphis for a little while before moving to New York, so this was partly a visit and partly a getting-connected-to-the-area thing.

Michael and Merritt ended up outside by the grill pretty quickly. Michael promises burgers that will melt in your mouth, and I’m not going to complain if he’s right. That left Cindi and me inside to talk.

She was very sweet, but I could tell she was nervous.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m not trying to be weird. I have GAD and occasional panic attacks. I’m learning to admit it and keep going, so I thought I should just tell you so you’d understand to start with.”

I liked that.

“Thank you for telling me,” I said. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad to know. And I’m glad you didn’t let it stop you from sitting here with me.”

That seemed to help. After that, she relaxed, and we talked about work.

Cindi told me Roman keeps asking her to do more and more.

“Not too much,” she said quickly. “Just more. Like he believes I can do it before I believe I can do it.”

I understood that.

“Will Robertson is doing something similar with me,” I said. “He hasn’t exactly handed me a sign that says future leadership, but that’s what it feels like. More responsibility. More trust. More chances to prove I can handle things.”

Cindi nodded. “So we’re both growing.”

“I think so.”

She smiled. “That’s terrifying.”

“Yes,” I said. “But apparently we’re doing it anyway.”

By the time Michael and Merritt came in, Cindi and I were laughing like we had known each other longer than one afternoon.

So, Memphis is hot, the people are kind, and apparently growth comes with barbecue, catfish, and burgers off the grill.

I’ll take it.

Chapter 145: NEW FRIENDS by Hannah Madison. Good afternoon, Hannah. Thanks for checking in. Glad you like Michael and Cindi. Merritt already knew Michael. Did Merritt know Cindi already? I am unclear on that point. Anyway, good that you two have become comfortable around each other. And, look, maybe Mr. Robertson didn't actually give you a T shirt that said "Future Leadership", he might as well have. You have a clear path to partnership success if you follow the path with which you have been provided. So, don't let him down. Merritt, either. I think you both know the stakes there. Anyway, good that you are enjoying yourselves. Enjoy.
