GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Good morning, everyone. Not much happening today, aside from letting someone in a black robe decide Emily’s future. You know…just another Journal day.

Without my snarky tone, what I meant is that today is Emily’s custody hearing. Everyone says this should be a formality. Emily, Jason, and I hope they are right.

We started the morning with a crisis. It began when I slipped into the “you’re not planning on wearing those shoes, are you?” vibe.

I sounded like the cliché mother in some stereotypical movie role.

In the tornado of activity over the last two weeks, we overlooked getting Emily shoes suitable for court. Jason asked Jasmine if she thought Kaylee had anything that might fit.

Calls were made. Close enough—too big by half a size, maybe, but they look nice.

Skirts and sneakers are cute for some occasions. We thought the court might not be the place for that look, though.

We’re all set now. Next stop, we meet the lead attorney on the case.

I’ll add that I’m a little dazed by the number and prestige of the attorneys Josh’s family put on this case. It really changed my impression of what “dad’s golf buddies” means.

Josh is so understated and humble that, just looking at him, you’d never expect that.

We’re about to head out…

In the meantime, I hope you have a great Friday morning. See you soon!

COURT ORDERED by Ailana Geven Keller

I walked in nervous. I’m walking out relieved, but not surprised. Josh’s lawyers were right.

The judge’s final ruling ended with this: “For today, the ruling is simple: Emily is safe. Emily stays where she is. Mrs. Keller has the authority to care for her. Ms. Amos has no access. And this Court will move as quickly as the law allows toward a permanent order that protects Emily’s safety and best interests.”

There’s a ton more to that, so here's the full ruling (Exclusive to Patreon):

“Based on the affidavits, testimony, exhibits, and law-enforcement summaries presented to the Court, I find that this child is present in the State of Texas and that emergency jurisdiction is necessary to protect her from mistreatment, abuse, and credible threats of sexual exploitation.

“I further find that the allegations concerning the child’s mother, Melinda Amos, are grave, specific, and supported by evidence sufficient for today’s hearing. The Court has heard testimony that law enforcement, including federal authorities, had been tracking a transaction involving this child; that the alleged buyer and broker have been arrested; and that Ms. Amos remains at large with active state and federal warrants.

“The Court finds aggravated circumstances. At this stage, the Court will not order reunification efforts with Ms. Amos. Ms. Amos is denied possession of, access to, or contact with the child unless and until further order of this Court.

“The emergency order is continued and expanded. The Court appoints Ailana Geven Keller as temporary managing conservator of Emily Amos. Mrs. Keller has the right to designate Emily’s primary residence; consent to medical, dental, psychological, and counseling services; enroll Emily in school; access school, medical, and counseling records; authorize travel; and make all ordinary and necessary decisions for Emily’s care, safety, and welfare.

“Jason Keller is recognized as an authorized caregiver within the household. He may transport Emily, communicate with medical providers and school officials as authorized by Mrs. Keller, and act in emergencies when Mrs. Keller is unavailable.

“Emily Amos shall remain placed in the home of Ailana Geven Keller and Jason Keller in South Padre Island, Texas. The Court finds that placement to be safe, appropriate, and in Emily’s best interest. The Court also finds that Mrs. Keller is Emily’s only known appropriate blood relative presently before the Court.

“The Court authorizes Emily to travel with Mrs. Keller, Mr. Keller, or other adults designated in writing by Mrs. Keller, including planned out-of-state travel, provided that a copy of this order travels with the child.

“This order is effective immediately. The written order will reflect the Court’s findings and shall be provided to the parties, law enforcement as necessary, and any appropriate child-welfare or court authority in Nevada.

“This matter is set for review in sixty days. At that time, if there has been no lawful appearance by a parent or other appropriate custodian, and if the facts remain substantially as presented today, the Court anticipates moving this case toward final conservatorship orders.

“For today, the ruling is simple: Emily is safe. Emily stays where she is. Mrs. Keller has the authority to care for her. Ms. Amos has no access. And this Court will move as quickly as the law allows toward a permanent order that protects Emily’s safety and best interests.”

After the hearing, we met someone who will be the caseworker for the rest of the process. Her name is Caroline Rivera, and she explained a little of what to expect.

Caroline explained that, from here, the process is less about proving Emily deserves safety and more about documenting that the safety is working. She’ll visit the condo, check in with Emily privately, help coordinate counseling and school paperwork, and make sure the court has what it needs before the sixty-day review.

“This is not punishment,” she said. “It’s protection, paperwork, and patience.”

I called Sasha to let her know how it went. She said it sounded great, and that she wanted to hear all about it when we got home.

Emily texted Kel as soon as we got out of court: “All good, like I planned.”

There’s a lot to that.

I have some issues with her plan, but you have to give her credit—she did her research and knew the court would not force her back into a home with our mother, who was already living in addiction and a criminal lifestyle before what she tried to do to Emily in the end.

So now we’re heading… Get ready for it…

Home.

As is my practice here, when using ChatGPT's words nearly intact, I let you know. If I don't tell you so, you can know the words you read here are human created. The judge's ruling was created by ChatGPT. It sounded pretty authentic and I agreed with it. Legalese isn't s strong vernacular for me, so I went with it.And… Since I'm on the AI bus, I asked Gemini to convert the judges ruling into Gen Z vernacular and style. Brace yourself… bro…
THE JUDGE’S RULING: ABSOLUTE CERTIFIED LORE (REAL & TRUE EDITION)The Receipts & The TeaThe vibe is emergency. The court checked the affidavits, testimony, and receipts from federal law enforcement. Emily is physically in Texas right now, and the court had to step in because the situation was genuinely dangerous. We are talking actual mistreatment, abuse, and credible threats of sexual exploitation. It’s a literal emergency.Melinda Amos is officially cancelled. The allegations against Emily’s mom, Melinda Amos, are heavy, hyper-specific, and backed up by concrete data. The court literally heard testimony that the feds were tracking a whole transaction involving Emily. The alleged buyer and broker already got caught and put in handcuffs. Meanwhile, Melinda is currently on the run with active state and federal warrants. She’s giving fugitive. The situation is catastrophic. Because of these aggravated circumstances, there will be absolutely zero reunification efforts with Melinda. Melinda is completely blocked. No custody, no visitation, no DMs, no contact whatsoever unless the court says otherwise later. She is fully restricted. The New Era for EmilyThe emergency order just got an upgrade. Ailana Geven Keller is officially the temporary managing conservator. Ailana has total control over Emily's life now. She decides where Emily lives, signs off on medical, dental, and therapy appointments, enrolls her in school, and handles all the day-to-day decisions for her safety. She is the blueprint.Jason Keller is authorized to help. Jason is officially recognized as an approved household caregiver. He can drive Emily around, talk to her doctors or school when Ailana gives the green light, and step up if there’s an emergency and Ailana is away.Emily is staying put. She is locked in at Ailana and Jason’s house in South Padre Island, Texas. The court confirmed this placement is safe, stable, and a total win for Emily. Plus, Ailana is literally the only appropriate blood relative who actually showed up to court.Travel is approved. Emily is cleared to travel with Ailana, Jason, or anyone Ailana approves in writing. They can even go out of state, they just have to keep a physical copy of this court order on them at all times.Next Steps & TL;DRThis goes live immediately. The written version of this ruling is being sent to everyone involved, including the cops and child welfare authorities out in Nevada. The 60-day countdown starts now. Everyone has to circle back in 60 days for a review. If Melinda or another parent doesn't legally show up by then, and the facts stay this messy, the court is going to make this setup permanent.TL;DR: It’s simple. Emily is safe. Emily stays exactly where she is. Ailana has full parental authority. Melinda is completely blocked. The court is moving fast to ensure Emily stays protected forever. Period.
I don't know why that made me smile…

NEEDING MORE by Olivia Overmark

I cannot say I dislike Geneva, nor can I say I dislike my job with the new organization. But there were certain aspects of Health For Humanity that I missed deeply.

“Amir?”

“Olivia! Vanessa said to expect your call.”

“I guess she told you I feel lost.”

“She mentioned you missed us.”

“To be honest, it’s more than that. Two assignments ago, I gave follow-up instructions to a patient, then looked around the clinic. That was when it hit me. I felt like a kid at a huge amusement park who looked up from feeding the ducks and realized her family had gone on to the roller coaster without her.

“I get that,” Amir replied.

“The work is the same. Being a surgeon…being a doctor in a field clinic is the same. But it’s not. Our team made the difference,” I said. “Did she tell you what I was thinking?”

Amir paused for a moment, then said, “She did. I’ve looked at the budget…Olivia, things are very tight here. PRN hours would be tough to fund.”

I understood that. Amir knows enough to know that I can get by on very little income. I have enough invested that I can rent a place and feed myself, so strictly speaking, the income isn’t my main reason.

“If there’s any way to get me on your health insurance plan, I’d be fine with token PRN pay…”

Amir paused, and I’m sure he was running numbers in his head. “Okay…let’s go with yes on that, but this is tentative.”

I smiled. “I’m off the schedule here. Off payroll, technically, but still on the roster. I can come anytime.”

“Everyone would love to see you,” Amir said. “I want you to meet Anika, of course.”

“I can’t wait. At least I can make a long visit.”

Amir hesitated no longer than a breath. “Define ‘can’t wait’?”

I laughed. “Have Vanessa find me a cheap, safe hotel and send me the info. I haven’t really unpacked from my last assignment in Uganda.”

He laughed. “Do you still live your life out of one suitcase and one travel bag?”

“Hopefully, not for much longer. I’ve missed you guys. It feels like I’m coming home.”

WORD OF THANKS by Sofia Torres

I saw the truck—the blue F-150 with the green door. I went in anyway.

I saw the Walmart vest first, then recognized the guy from Circle K earlier this week. Since that day, I’d had a nagging thought.

He had shown a stranger a little kindness. A woman standing idly by the door of a gas station…probably nothing. But maybe something. He took a few seconds to ask.

And I didn’t think to thank him. I had a chance to make amends, so I tried.

I walked up—he was facing the other way. “Excuse me…”

He turned, looked up, smiled a tiny bit, and nodded.

“Circle K? Tuesday?”

He nodded.

“I was surprised…lost my manners. I should have thanked you for being concerned and asking if I needed anything.”

He shrugged. “Well, the good thing is you were fine. And you’re welcome.”

I smiled and nodded. “Okay… just wanted to say thanks. Enjoy your shake.”

He nodded again. “I will…see you around maybe…have a good weekend.”

“You too,” I said, then went to the counter and ordered.

When I got my food and turned to leave the counter, he was heading for the door. He didn’t look my way, so he didn’t wave or say anything. I felt like I was spared making some awkward gesture. I watched him get into his truck and leave.

I found a place to sit and eat, then opened my messages to see what Jasmine had to say about her day entertaining the two models from out of town.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m honestly exhausted. I suppose I had no idea how much I had been—figuratively—holding my breath about the hearing.

When we got into the Highlander, Emily and I sat in the second row, and Jason slid back to the third.

She kicked off Kaylee’s shoes, buckled up, texted someone something, then looked over at me. “I promise I won’t be hard to deal with. I didn’t know how it would turn out, but I knew they wouldn’t make me go back.”

“There’s really nothing or anyone to go back to,” Jason said.

“You’re not hard to deal with,” I said.

“I can get a job, now, right? Since I’m staying officially?”

It was not the first time her getting a job had come up. “We’re planning a road trip in ten days. How do you see that fitting with your job idea?”

She looked down and nodded. “I need to pay Kaylee back for the clothes she gave me… And for letting me use her shoes…”

“I don’t think she expects anything in return,” I said.

She shrugged and looked down at whatever message had appeared on her screen.

Jason then spoke up. “How about this? Spend next week helping her with her business. You can help her for a few days and not get paid. Call it even.”

Emily processed that and said, “That sounds fair. I’ll get Jasmine to ask her if that sounds fair.”

I smiled. “Emily, Kaylee will say you don’t have to do it, but she’ll be grateful. I think it’s a good plan.”

So that’s in motion, on top of the dozens of other things already moving related to taking care of Emily. But at every turn, she’s grateful and cooperative.

She’s doing her best to make it easy. I’m going to do my best to make her feel like she belongs and is loved.

Good night.
