Eyes On The Target by Laylana Vals
I can’t show you where I am now. We are on stage two of a water deployment from Panama. I'll get to that.
Stage one began back in Panama City. Aunt Judy—our logistics support group that operates as codename Aunt Judy—has a boat. It’s a modified Munson 48-12. It’s named Judith’s Joy, and it’s a utility boat by design—nothing about it is classified except its mission.
It can reach 39 mph and cruises around 30 to 33 mph. The whole bow can be lowered onto a beach—you can walk right off. Or on.
I know what you’re thinking, but not this time.
We left Panama City late in the afternoon and cruised out to sea to rendezvous with our second leg of transportation. At some point, the captain cut the engines, and dropped the stern anchor. Then—as he called it—he iced the engines with a CO₂ fire extinguisher that seemed to have survived WWII intact.
He also cut off all the lights. With the air temperature in the mid-80s°F, our visual and thermal signature is hardly noticeable unless someone is looking closely.
No one should be.
After sunset our second leg of transportation arrived. Rising from beneath the waves, a highly classified amphibious sub nosed up to Judith’s Joy’s lowered bow ramp.
In literally seconds, the Deep Secret team boarded. The captain was waiting for us at the bottom of the ladder.
“Hatch secure,” one of the crewmen declared.
“Dive,” the captain said into an intercom mic, then he looked at us. “Welcome aboard Hellbender II. Everything is need-to-know. I’ll shake your hand, but don’t tell me your name, shoe size, or if you’re allergic to peanuts.”
“Thank you,” Mason replied.
“Deployment bay is forward. Put your gear there. You can ride here in the mid bay. No need to go aft—it’s crowded and classified. Need to know only. Water and protein bars in the fridge. Use the intercom if you need anything.”
Mason thanked him again and we all settled down.
The sub will drop us off directly on the target beach. The forward bulkhead drops down, becoming an exit ramp.
The captain actually said, “You won’t even get your tootsies wet.”
