GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Jason and I tried to have another argument over semantics this morning. Is Sunday the first day of the week or the last day of the weekend? It lasted about three sentences before we got bored and went back to the Pop-Tarts debate.

So, from that, you might guess that today’s agenda is light. Josh and Geoni are taking Kel and Emily to the church their friends attend—the one with the Youth Group. The rest of us are heading to Chapel by the Sea as usual.

This seems to be working, so for now, we’ll stick with it.

After church,Jason handed down an edict for the rest of the day: after church, we won’t work. We worked on Saturday, and we both have a full week of work already planned. So, today… No work.

I’ll leave you to guess what that’s going to look like!

See you after church!

SOMETHING LIKE SETTLED by Sasha Everett

Ailana and Jason have already headed to church in the Honda. Clay, Jasmine, Micah, and I are one round of morning sickness behind them.

I wanted to check in and say that things around Whiting Street feel something like settled. The hearing is over, and Emily is staying. Kel is part of the Ryan family and is just going through the last steps to make his adoption final.

Micah has things going great over at the factory. Jasmine made it through all of her classes this semester.

The Route 66 trip is on track. Clay got his new toy—the Thor Freedom Traveler A24 RV and matching cargo trailer. Jason, Geoni, and Ailana have color-coded everything in the studio and can pack it all up in a matter of an hour or so.

Kel and Emily seem to be happy. That, to me, is great. When I came out to catch up with everyone in the Highlander, they were sitting on the stairs looking at things on their phones. I couldn’t help but think they looked like siblings waiting for mom and dad to take them to church.

To be honest, the one thing that’s not settled is my morning sickness. According to my doctor, it should start letting up over the next few weeks. But getting pregnant was something we hoped for, and it happened—one more piece of our future settling into place.

I have to say that this feels really good. AGI Creative is set up, ready to go, and able to deliver quality work at a moment’s notice. SwimFit is up and running with a good crew in the factory and orders coming in a little faster than expected.

On a Sunday—a time to slow down and give thanks—things seem really good right now.

BEACH DAY by Ailana Geven Keller

If you don’t care to see me enjoying the sun and sand, then today’s going to disappoint you. Jason and I are here to stay.

We were going to bring Emily—and maybe Kel—to hang out with us and even let her call her friends if she wanted to. (More on that thought.)

However, Dad called and said he had a surprise for Emily and wanted to take her and Kel to lunch and then to the park. He didn’t say what it was. She didn’t hazard a guess. I suppose we’ll find out…

Back to the “let her call her friends” thought… So, according to Clay, I’m over-overseeing. He asked how many times Dad organized group outings when I was a junior in high school. He asked how many times Jason’s family took the kids to the beach.

Jason replied, “He’s got a point there. I don’t think they need us to organize a trip for them to walk 500 feet.”

Still… I think I want to hang out with her sometimes. So, let’s call it a work in progress.

That’s all for now. Except for making the 500-foot walk for bathroom breaks and snacks, Jason and I are planning to be here for the rest of the day. We’re going to pack a picnic and have dinner here.

I’ll be back later, so see you then.

GAME OF CATCH by Emily Amos

After church, Pops—that’s what Ailana’s dad, Allen, said I should call him—called Ailana and said he’d like to take Kel and me to lunch and spend a few hours with us. So he had a surprise!

The first time we met, he asked if I could think of anything he could do for me, and I said he could teach me to throw and catch the way he taught Ailana.

He bought gloves and a softball. I was so excited that I forgot to cry!

Kel already seemed pretty good at it, and Geoni let him bring her camera, so he took pictures. He’s getting good at that, too.

When we took a break for water, Kel told me to pose the way we’ve heard Jason and Ailana direct people who model for them. He took some pictures that I thought looked goofy, but he said I should show at least one so people could see what he’s learned about photography.

Over the last year, while reading my sister’s social media posts, I went back dozens of times to the story of her asking Pops to teach her to throw and catch when she was twelve, and to the posts about her playing in high school.

I know I’m not her, but I wanted to understand, even a little, what she was like.

I never had a father. And I didn’t have a father figure either. I also know Allen isn’t my father.

But he’s kind, and playing softball with him was great. I’ve imagined a thousand times what it must have been like for Ailana to have a father who was so good to her.

Today, I got a little glimpse.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Our day on the beach nears its end, but we’re relishing the final minutes. We’ve watched the tide change, gulls make endless passes along the shoreline, and countless tourists pass this way and that. Shortly, we’ll grab our things and trek back home.

Emily and Kel came down to the beach and found us. She had a report about playing softball with Dad that she was eager to share. Kel had pictures to prove it.

They gave their report, asked whether we wanted them to go back to the condos and get anything, and, when we said we were fine, asked if they could walk up to Mateo’s house and hang out. (Kel had already gotten permission from Josh and Geoni.)

We watched them walk all the way back to the beach access walkover, where they sat down and put their shoes back on. I’m pleased they get along. If they didn’t, living so close could make things challenging.

One slight departure from the norm this week will be a shopping trip for Emily. She has enough clothes now that she can hang out on the island without being a slave to the laundry room. I want to get a little more for her to have for the road trip, plus a few nice casual dresses in case we go to a restaurant with servers who come to the table.

Otherwise, I can say I’m looking at a normal week as a writer. And a wife. And a sister.

It will be an honor to share these next days with you.

May you have, from time to time, seasons that are steady and grounded in the expected—days in which you can be productive, profitable, and at peace.

Good night.

AFTERTHOUGHTS by Ailana Geven Keller (Supporter Exclusive)

I really hope the week ahead turns out to be predictable. That doesn’t mean we won’t have our spontaneous trips and things. Maybe even a “need it yesterday” shoot. But those are part of the routine now.

It’s been a busy few weeks since our honeymoon ended. I’m looking forward to seeing how this new life as a wife and a sister feels when things are normal.

Thank you very much for being part of these ordinary days with me.

SOMETHING LIKE SETTLED by Sasha Everett. Sorry you started the morning a little slowly, but I hope the bout is over, and you are feeling better. Good morning, Sasha. Thank you for your quick recap. BEACH DAY by Ailana Geven Keller. Nothing says relax like a day at the beach. I'm sure Emily and Kel will be fine. You and Jason should just chill and relax. It's the beach, for good ness sake. I am so jealous. I'm sure you'll get your chance to hang out with her. But don't force it. You know, you're her older sister. And her guardian. Like you said, that relationship is a work in progress. It will develop in its own time. Enjoy your day. It doesn't happen often.

GAME OF CATCH by Emily Amos. Hi Emily. Nice to hear from you. Good you were able to get a taste of Ailana's experience when she was your age. Allen is a great dad. He isn't your father, that's true, but he might have some insight for you as your relationship with him grows. I think both of you would like that. Glad that you could have this time with him. Thanks for your post.

AFTERTHOUGHTS by Ailana Geven Keller . I will be surprised if your week is predictable. You always say that and then something, not on the schedule, happens. The plan moves forward, then, just maybe not the way originally laid out. I'm sure you and the team can handle it. Take care.
