ABOUT JENNA by Dan Mercer
My crew and I had an early patrol this morning, so once we docked and readied the boat for tomorrow, I filed my reports and headed home. When I arrived, one of Jenna’s friends, Gabe, was standing by the gate.
Jenna told me a few days ago that they were “trying things out” which she explained meant they were more than just talking, but not committed to dating yet. I don’t know what all that means, but I’ve seen them hold hands.
Gabe saw me approach and pointed at the house. “Jenna’s changing shoes. We’re going to walk on the beach, and she wanted to swap her sneakers for flip-flops.”
“So you’re waiting outside.”
“Yes, sir. That’s the rule…”
I smiled and nodded. “I appreciate you two following it.”
Gabe nodded, then changed the subject. “You did a patrol today?”
I nodded. “Pretty routine. We picked up a distress call and started to respond, but then the boat called back to say the engine had started and they were underway. So basically, we rode around all day.”
I didn’t go into it any further, but just being visible is a deterrent, so even when we’re doing nothing, we’re actually doing something.
Gabe then looked at me more seriously. “Mr. Mercer, can I tell you something?”
I nodded. “You can, but depending on what you say, I might have to call your parents or the cops.”
I hoped it sounded funny, but I was serious.
Gabe smiled. “Nah… I don’t do anything you’d have to worry about. I just wanted to tell you that I think Jenna is pretty awesome. She says you’re a great dad.”
I wasn’t expecting anything so honest, but I gave him an honest answer in return. “Well, I know for a fact that Jenna really likes spending time with you. You’re probably pretty awesome yourself.”
“Thanks, but I’m probably pretty average. I just wanted to tell you that, though.”
Before I had to say anything else, the door slammed and Jenna came toward us. She hugged me and made sure I’d seen her text about going to the beach. I had, and they headed off together.
I went inside to find something for dinner.
