GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Jason struck back. He hid all my panties, shorts, and pants. However, I’m just fine wearing a towel all day—or even nothing—and I think he knows that. All the same, I’m letting him think I’m freaking out.

He’s already started the “you’re getting hotter” game. We’re having so much fun!

I feel like today should be another version of yesterday. The only thing remotely out of the ordinary is that I’m meeting with Jasmine and Kaylee after breakfast to go over their modeling trip to Dallas. Jasmine made a checklist and wants me to see if I notice anything she overlooked.

I’m planning to call Meredith Sinclair to see where she is with the Couldfall project. We haven’t talked by phone since she wrapped up her school year.

I could repeat things I’ve already told you, but I won’t. Jason is standing in the doorway of the bathroom saying, “You’re not getting hotter!”

I guess I need to find my pants!

In the meantime, I hope you have a great Wednesday morning. See you soon!

WHAT DOES “SORT OF” MEAN? by Ailana Geven Keller

This version of the story is exclusive to Patreon.

This post would probably be better as a miniseries! It began about half an hour ago. It won’t end with the last words of this post, either. This is the start of a new thing.

Honestly, I should have seen it coming. We all should have. Among the adults here at the AGI Whiting Street condos, there have been a lot of facepalms and “Oh, wow…duh!” moments.

After meeting with Kaylee and Jasmine, I was working in the living room this morning, so when Geoni knocked on the door instead of texting, I was caught a little off guard.

“Do you know where Kel is? We haven’t seen him in a few hours. We’ve texted him a few times…no reply.”

I shook my head, and she went on. “He left his phone in the office. It’s still there… We left it in case he comes back.”

Jason overheard us and said, “Maybe he and Emily took a walk.”

Geoni nodded. “Josh and I thought the same thing.”

Jason followed Geoni into the street where I’m now standing. But at that moment, I went the other way.

I grabbed my phone and checked Life360. Emily’s phone was in the condo building, so I figured she was in her room.

I hurried up to the third floor. As I went by, I looked inside the office and saw nothing but Kel’s phone on one of the sofas and Emily’s sandals on the floor beside it.

I kept going to the third floor, where I found the exterior door to the condo open. A passing thought about letting cold air out and bugs in didn’t keep me from entering.

I could hear her voice. “We’re so lucky… I can’t believe how good everything is. Like, I really believe I’m loved. Not just tolerated.”

I teared up, then Kel answered. “I know…me too. No one has ever cared for me like this. I mean, you had it worse…for real. No one was trying to sell me into…you know…trafficking.”

I guessed they were in the kitchen, and didn’t want to barge in, so I hesitated.

“You saw all the dresses she bought me. And three pairs of shoes. Sandals, slip-ons, and even some heels.”

“Emily, no one ever cared about me like Josh and Geoni do.”

“Right?” Emily said. “We’re so blessed.”

That was when I second-guessed the kitchen theory and realized they were in the bedroom. That door was wide open, too. I moved that way and caught a glimpse.

They were sitting on the bed. Kel had a pillow in his lap and Emily had her head on it. She saw me and smiled, but didn’t sit up. They looked at me as if it were totally normal for two teens to be cuddling alone in a bedroom without any adults knowing anything about it.

I…turned into a crazy mom. “What are you two doing?”

I guess my tone didn’t sound as freaked out as I was. Two teens alone in a bedroom, on a bed… She had her head in his lap…

Emily kept smiling and barely moved. “I was showing Kel the dresses you bought me.”

“You’re on the bed together! What are you doing?”

Emily finally realized I was freaking out, so she sat up. “We aren’t doing anything…”

I interrupted. “It looks like you might be!”

Emily seemed shocked. “I was just showing him the dresses you bought me. And we were talking…”

My thoughts replayed what I had heard before I lost control of myself. All the same, I couldn’t help pressing for more information.

“You shouldn’t be like that alone on a bed. Are you two… are you…” I have no idea where the words that came out next came from, but I said them. “Are you two swapping spit?”

Emily scowled. “Gross! Ailana! Yuck!”

Kel understood the question. “She means kissing.”

Emily looked at him, and he looked at me before adding, “Sometimes. I mean, like, a few times.”

“Kissing?” I tried to process that, but before I could, I asked another question. “Are you two dating?”

Emily looked at Kel. “Not really.”

Kel was looking at me and he answered at the same time. “Sort of.”

Emily grabbed his arm and smiled. “Really?”

Kel looked at her. “I mean, like, we are. Sort of.”

“You’ve never asked me.”

At that moment, every déjà vu cell in my brain fired at once, taking me back to when Jason and I were just a little older and had a very, very similar exchange of words.

Kel shrugged and replied, “I should have said something.”

Emily smiled. “I guess I could have said something, too.”

That’s as far as I let them go. “Hang on! I’m not done freaking out here! Remember me? Crazy sister with all the questions?”

They both looked at me and I went on. “Especially if you are sort of dating… You can’t be alone in a condo, in the bedroom, on the bed! That’s just not…smart!”

“We didn’t do anything bad,” Emily replied. “We were just talking.”

I sighed. “Sure…but there’s so much more. Just…Kel, your parents are worried. They haven’t seen you in a couple of hours, and you don’t have your phone.”

He patted his pockets, looked at Emily, then pointed down. “It’s like ten feet away.”

“They found your phone. Not you. They’re so worried they don’t know what to do. They texted, and you didn’t answer. They’re freaking out more than I am.”

Something about that hit Kel. His mood changed, and he got very serious.

“Worried?”

I nodded.

“Emily, I gotta go…” He stood up.

“Kel,” I said, “go find your parents. Tell them where I found you, what you were doing, and what you weren’t doing. And also tell them what you and Emily are sort of doing.”

He nodded and wiped his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

I smiled. “It’s fine. You were ten feet away from your phone… just on a different floor of the building.”

“I’m going…” he said.

I moved aside and let Kel pass. I was surprised to see him crying.

I looked back at Emily when he was gone. “I didn’t mean to make him cry.”

She looked down. “He doesn’t think anyone ever cared about him enough before now to worry.”

Well, that made me cry.

I’ll skip over the part where I told her she couldn’t have boys in the bedroom and all the reasons I gave her.

However, I will share her answer: “It was not just some boy. It was Kel, and we left the doors open on purpose.”

I pushed back. “Since you left the doors open, you knew you were about to cross some line you shouldn’t cross.”

She countered, “We were just going to look at the dresses real quick, then go, but we started talking.”

I sighed. “All reasonable, but you ended up on the bed. Granted, you were sitting, but you had your head in his lap. That line you were thinking about when you left the doors open? You found it.”

She closed her eyes and nodded. “We didn’t do anything, and we wouldn’t.”

I smiled. “And my job is to make it easier for you not to do what you say you wouldn’t.”

She nodded. “We won’t come up here alone again.”

At that point, we hugged and went back downstairs to wait in the office. Still, my whole everything was just spinning.

I told her to just hang out and not to worry. “Nothing bad happened. We’ll clarify some boundaries, and everything will be fine. I’m sorry I freaked out.”

Well, she has a way of making me cry with her words.

This time, she said, “You only freaked out because you care. That’s a new thing for me, so I’m sort of glad you did. Now I know I matter.”

I teared up, hugged her again, and told her I was going to catch my breath. So here I am…catching my breath.

We’ll talk about what happened and make some adjustments. I suspect we’ll be doing a lot of that over the days, weeks, and months to come!

Meanwhile, I need some air.

GOING FORWARD by Ailana Geven Keller

Well, after the midday events, I decided to call it a day. Of course, that meant dragging Jason to the beach.

If you missed it, I walked in on Kel and Emily sitting together on her bed when no adults were present. In truth, it was totally innocent, and after I calmed down enough, I was able to explain why the adults would not approve of two teens being alone together on a bed in a condo.

All six of us met to talk about. They both acknowledged our concerns, even though they insisted those concerns were not really warranted. We held our ground. None of us are willing to let them be alone in a condo without adults—the same rule as when they go to their friends’ houses, just applied here as well.

There’s a second factor at play. Since some point around the court date they have been kissing, and today agreed they are dating. Adding that in, we had to further update the understanding of what was allowed.

We talked about what dating as sixteen-year-olds meant.

“Let’s just get awkward,” Jason said. “Your bodies will want to do things your brains believe are meant for when you’re older…and some things meant for marriage.”

They both blushed a little.

Josh picked up the thought. “We want to set up some guardrails so you’ll have an easier time making choices.”

“Please don’t make this embarrassing,” Emily said.

Jason to the rescue. “Here… let’s keep it simple. If you wouldn’t want complete strangers watching you do it, don’t do it… Even if you are alone somewhere that isn't inside and no one is watching.”

No one said anything for a few seconds, then Kel nodded. “Okay… so these are the new rules. Don’t go inside anything anywhere at any time without an adult present. And don’t do anything we wouldn’t do in front of complete strangers.”

Geoni smiled. “That covers it, I think.”

Jason took it one more step. “Exceptions allowed for hurricanes, tornadoes, and zombie attacks.”

Kel and Emily thought that was funnier than I did.

They ditched us all to go to Mateo’s again for some gaming. Jason and I came here.

This guardian thing is really tough. But it’s great.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

I got the whole middle name treatment from Dad tonight. He only does that when I need to stop thinking and listen.

He got wind that I was a little sideways over Emily and Kel dating. I think Micah might have mentioned it to Isaac, who mentioned it to Dad, but that’s not the point.

Dad stopped by and went for a walk with Jason and me.

“I would have thought,” he said, “you’d have seen it coming. When we were playing softball, I was pretty sure.”

“What?” I replied.

“He looked at her like she was precious, amazing, and the part of him that was missing. She looked at him like he was the answer to all her questions.”

“They’re only sixteen.”

“You were sixteen, too. You two roamed Lake County, Indiana all alone with your phones taking pictures. Nothing bad happened.”

“It could have,” I said.

Dad laughed. “What’s the worst thing that could happen?”

I held up my hands. “They could die or make a baby!”

That’s when Dad pulled out the middle name. “Ailana Caitlin Keller, listen to yourself! Make some rules so that they don’t do either of those things, and then trust that they’ll be fine. In less than two years, they’ll be eighteen and have graduated. Set some boundaries and trust them to find their way within them.”

I took a deep breath and let that sink in, and Dad went on. “Look, you two were hardly any different. I’m not saying they are following in your footsteps. They’re following in the footsteps of every boy and girl who has ever looked at someone and felt what they’re feeling.

“What are they feeling?” Jason asked.

“The same thing you felt when you realized you were dating.” Dad slapped Jason on the shoulder.

“I wasn’t ready for this,” I replied.

“No parent ever is, I’d say.” Dad shrugged. “Somehow, the world keeps turning.”

Wow… Okay. With that, Ailana Caitlin Geven Keller is signing off now…

May you face the surprises life throws at you knowing that…the world keeps turning.

Good night.

WHAT DOES “SORT OF” MEAN? by Ailana Geven Keller . Yeah. I saw this first on IG. Again, I say "wow"! Never saw it coming. Behaving like siblings? I thought. Now I think it's kind of funny, the high power freakout reaction. But...young love. Interesting to see where this goes!

GOING FORWARD by Ailana Geven Keller. It's not easy, is it? But...it will be okay, I think. Give them room and trust to comply. I think it will be alright.
