Chapter 155: LIFETIME AHEAD by Hannah Madison

Nothing whimsical from me today… I’m just deep in my thoughts.

I have to go back to the office to wrap up a few things, then the convoy to the airport will pick me up. Wheels up, Paul said, at 1:00 p.m.

My thoughts are naturally on Emma and Noah’s wedding. Paul and Rebecca’s, too, of course.

I’ve seen a change in my roommate since we got back from the house-hunting trip. She seems settled.

She seems grounded and sure about her future. Or, as she says it: her life with Noah, a little house with a big porch, and a yard full of grass. She told me after she graduates from college, they’ll start a family. She’ll be an amazing mother, so full of love and endowed with a practical understanding of life.

Of course, I cannot help but cast myself into some future version of me. I dare not say who I’ll be with, but I’m sure we’ll have a different life compared to Emma and Noah. Yet maybe I’ll be ready to start a family about the same time as Emma. Or a year or two later.

I’m sure I won’t have a big porch and probably no yard at all. But I can feel the idea of being settled and grounded pulling me along.

Thank you for indulging my thoughts today. I’ll try to find something silly to talk about next time. See you then.

Chapter 156: CHANGE OF PLAN by Eric Marsten

Ronald Regent, the head of Ryder Family Protective Services, made a last-minute decision to change the trip to Memphis. The biggest noticeable change was transportation.

Instead of taking the Pay It Forward Society’s jet—which would have limited who could go and what could be packed—he deployed one of Blue Water Express’s Boeing 737 BBJ corporate jets. It has forty-four first-class-style seats, lounge space, and a meeting room.

Cool stuff; not what I want to talk about. I’m in charge of security, not transportation.

Paul gets to ride in the cabin, though. Not sure how he feels about that.

Okay, everyone came—except Noah and Kent, who are already in Memphis. I guess I should say that Merritt and Hannah’s boss, who is an advisor to Pay It Forward Society, also didn’t come. Some of you know who he is.

I spent the week running background checks on Liza McDuffy and the woman who replaced Shay at Habitat Housing, Melissa Gaines. They both cleared, and for the sake of this trip, I met with them last night and read them in on the decoy operation.

I’m not exactly sure why Shay wanted Melissa to come on this trip, but that also is not my place to worry about. Tia figures it has to do with Melissa’s loyalty to Habitat Housing and her friendship with Izzy.

So, there are twenty-seven of us on the plane, including Tia, me, and the four other members of the security team who don’t live in Crossroads Phase II. (Conner and Olivia live inside Phase I.)

Another decision was to deploy the decoys—Evan and Mara—to Memphis. This is where it gets interesting.

Evan and Mara (posing as Shay and Devon) dropped off the grid a couple of days ago and made their way to Memphis. To the media and anyone looking, Shay and Devon’s next public appearance will be at the wedding—with the real Shay and Devon appearing as themselves.

Mara and Evan will be in the shadows ready to move in as body doubles if there’s an incident. For a few days, the identities of Mara and Evan cease to exist.

This might be the biggest game of “just in case” ever… And I hope it stays “just in case.”

Chapter 156: CHANGE OF PLAN by Eric Marsten. Hey man. Thanks for posting. Shay news are always welcome. And bringing up Mara and Evan into the mix amps up the excitement. And, I guess, the secrecy. But I am glad you are finally clueing in Liza into the fold. And Melissa. I love the change of transportation. Now, that's a jet! Wonder how the Commander feels about being a passenger this time. With all the precautions in place, I can't fathom anything bad happening. Your men will all be in place to make sure. Thanks for checking in.
