GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller
Happy Saturday and welcome to the weekend. Tomorrow is a travel day, so today is a getting-ready-to-travel day.
That’s not to imply that we haven’t been getting ready for weeks. It’s just, you know, the last bits of this and that.
Because who can go on a long trip without plenty of this and that? I think we’ve got plenty of these and those, but a few more bits of this and that are needed.
I’ll stop now.
I’m mostly getting things like shampoo and other toiletries—boring things you don’t want to interrupt a trip to shop for…
I’ll check in later, so see you soon.

STOCKING UP by Ailana Geven Keller
Yes, it is Saturday and the trip is supposed to start on Monday. The plan was to arrive Sunday night and hit the road on Monday. But you know how plans go around here…
Naomi has our itinerary, which has already become just a list of places we’ll eventually get to. She called me as I was on my way here.
“Hey… Santa Monica is really nice, isn’t it?”
I’ll cut to the chase. She wants to send two models there on Tuesday for a mini boot camp photo session. The compensation is pretty good—Sasha ran the numbers—and the revised plan has us spending Monday getting ready, Tuesday running the shoot and packing up, then hitting the road Wednesday morning.
I’ll share more about the shoot details another time when I’m doing something boring like sitting on the plane. I mean, why defile the excitement of shampoo shopping with details like outfits and vibe for a one-day photo session?
Also on the list, besides toiletries, is a car charger for the laptop I gave Emily. It has bad battery life, which is why I replaced it, but it’s doing a good job for her and currently meets her needs, so we’ll get a car charger and call it good.
That’s it from Walmart in Port Isabel! I’ll be back tonight—I’m thinking of one last walk on the beach and maybe kicking a few waves. How does that sound?
TMI OR? by Kel Ryan
I’m over at Beach Access 7 with Emily, and I’m still processing things from earlier today. She said I could talk about it—she thinks I’m being goofy.
After lunch, all of the adults were doing different things, and Emily and I wanted to hang out—no surprise, right? She said for me to go to the patio.
“Be right back. I want to show you something.” She ran up to her condo and met me in the backyard with her backpack.
First, she opened it and handed me a flowery zippered pouch with the Maybelline logo on it. Then she dumped out the pack.
Inside were a pair of socks, some lip balm, a hairbrush, five fresh granola bars, and a rolled-up T-shirt. That’s all.
“I had a talk with Ailana. New plan.”
She took the Maybelline bag and unzipped it, and then she started handing me things…
Wet wipes… A zip-top storage bag with two twenties… So far, no biggie. I laid them on the lounge chair.
Next came a pair of panties and a sports bra. Plop, right in my hands.
I was still trying not to blush about the underwear when out came a girl’s hygiene…thing. Then a pad, too. She handed me those, too.
“That’s everything. The makeup bag is my emergency stash in case I start unexpectedly or if something happens and I have to change.”
I didn’t say anything, and I don’t know what I should’ve said. I don't know if all that was TMI or normal for a girlfriend to talk about openly with her boyfriend. And we’d only been boyfriend and girlfriend for a couple of days, on top of that.
Like, I took biology, so I'm not dumb, and it seemed like no big deal to her to put it all in my hands.
“Ailana wasn’t mad about the backpack. She just said I had too much in it and was carrying it for the wrong reasons. This is just to have in case of an emergency.”
That’s the gist of the story, but I have a few more thoughts on it.

To me, the biggest difference in the pack contents was that there wasn’t a week’s worth of stale snack bars. What seemed to change was Emily’s view on it.
Like, I know I’m a kid, but I think I get it. Growing up like she did, the backpack was her survival kit. She never knew what she’d be walking in on at the apartment, so she was always ready to turn around and go sleep behind a van or in the bathroom of a closed thrift store.
Honestly, that makes sense given her situation.
Now that she’s here, she doesn’t need that. She’s just used to having it.
Ailana pulled some Jedi mind trick. The pack isn’t for your survival. It’s in case you have an emergency. It can still give her comfort to know she has it, but she’s thinking about it differently.
Now, back to the tampons and pads… That’s what she teased me about an hour or so later when I admitted how it had made me feel.
“I can’t believe that embarrassed you!” She took the tampon out and handed it to me. “Don’t be scared or ashamed. I’m not.”
And she's not—that’s for sure. I gave it back to her and she packed it all up again.
Ailana called Emily inside for something to do with the trip, so I texted Mateo: “Bro…too much to text—call me?”
I told him what all happened and said, “Like, is that normal?”
His reply wasn’t really helpful, but low-key it was. “I don’t know, bro. Nothing like that’s ever happened to me, so just… I don’t know. I guess the big thing is she didn’t care, so you shouldn’t. Roll with it and don’t make it a thing. Like, I guess my dad doesn’t worry about it with my mom, right?”
I’m not talking to Josh about this one. I guess it is what it is and nothing more.
And, like I said, I’m not keeping my thoughts a secret from Emily, so… yeah, all that.
GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller
Everything we’re taking on the Route 66 Odyssey is packed or laid out to put on in the morning. Dad and Isaac will help us get to the airport with all our luggage—Dad in his pickup and Isaac in his 4Runner. We’ve already scheduled a Lyft as well.
Since we’re ready to go, I put on mismatched pieces of a bathing suit that I hadn’t packed, grabbed Jason and dragged him to the beach. Because I can do that.
Emily and Kel arranged for their friends from the youth group to come over for a farewell party—which THEY are definitely calling it. Jasmine is hanging out with them in the office where they are having snacks and playing video games. Josh and Geoni are hovering but pretending not to be.
Clay and Micah are on schedule. Sasha has already started changing hotel reservations to accommodate the Tuesday boot camp photo session.
Basically, everything is in order for us to get the Route 66 trip underway.
Therefore, I’ll wrap up and see if I can get Jason to put away the camera and watch the waves with me.
May you ease into opportunities so that life continues around them, while still allowing them to lead you toward personal growth and prosperity.
Good night.
