Chapter 3.1.08: BIG DECISIONS by Izzy Duffy

I told Kent about my conversation with one of Ailana’s friends, Vanessa Lenen. Vanessa called me to ask how to word a job description for someone who would handle casework follow-up for a grant she’s applying for.

“Basically,” I told Kent, “I described myself. I included other degrees that would be equivalent to mine, but…”

“Do you want the job?” he asked.

I shrugged. “We agree that New York isn’t where we want to raise kids. It’s an idea. We really liked South Padre Island, right?”

“What’s not to like? A small-town vibe in a beach community? What’s the downside?”

“Hurricanes?” I replied.

He laughed. “Okay, fair enough…”

We sat quietly with that thought for a while, but I could tell he was thinking.

“You know, if you take the job and I move with you—there or anywhere else—we’re basically saying we’re getting married sooner rather than later.”

I nodded. “Well, we’ve been saying ‘when’ and ‘after’ for weeks now. Months, to be honest.”

“Okay… I’m all for following you wherever you go. I guess we can say we’re planning to get married. We’ll upgrade to commitment soon, okay?”

I took that to mean engagement and said that sounded amazing.

Kent returned to practical matters. “I’ll have to work on my electrician license, but it's just a process. I can sell my company, and that will be enough to start over. There might be some lean months while it works out, but I’ll start pulling my documentation together now, just in case.”

We talked a lot more—probably three hours or more over the last couple of days. Tomorrow, I’ll follow up with Vanessa and ask her whether I can submit a résumé in case the job becomes a reality.

Maybe this is providence opening a door to a better future for us.

Chapter 3.1.09: IT’S A MOTEL by Mara Voss

After all the paparazzi in Memphis, Evan and I—once more traveling as Shay and Devon—have kept our heads down and stayed off the grid as much as possible. We’re in Louisiana now, west of New Orleans.

Evan says we aren’t anywhere at the moment, but I think the people who live here would disagree. It’s a pleasant place to pass through, if you ask me.

We had a long debriefing after the wedding weekend over Teams. Ronald Regent presided and Eric Marsten backed him up. Olivia pointed out a few gaps in the weekend when something could have slipped through. Not likely, but in the event of a zombie apocalypse, we might have had issues.

Eric summarized the observations. “Anything less than an organized assault team wouldn’t have made it through the gaps. Overall, it was good.”

Mr. Regent agreed, adding that Evan and I were needed only because Shay’s participation in the public wedding weekend made the extra layer necessary. “If she and Devon wanted to travel to Miami, they could go as Mara and Evan and the decoys could carry on wherever they happen to be.”

Well, today, we happen to be on US-190 somewhere west of New Orleans.

That’s all for now.
