GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Monday hit me like… a Monday that doesn’t know I’m traveling. Like a Monday that thinks staying in bed another hour is an option. It really isn’t—nine other people are expecting me to follow the established plan.

So, I rolled over, retrieved the T-shirt from last night’s Afterthoughts picture, put it on, and plopped back down on the bed.

“Take the pictures, Jason,” I said.

He got the camera. “So, we’re going full-on authentic slice of life today?”

“Let’s call it that,” I replied.

I’ll get going, but first I want to check in and say good morning. Thanks for finding this and reading it!

The plan today is to get to Oklahoma City, check in to a hotel, and get ready for tomorrow. Naomi has a wardrobe person shopping the local malls for what we need for tomorrow’s shoot. We’ll do our own hair and makeup.

En route, we’ll grab some notes and pictures for future content, but for the next 48 hours, we’re slipping out of Route 66 Odyssey mode and into AGI Creative mode.

I have no idea where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing, but I’ll check in!

SERVER TROUBLES

Nick Fashola looked at his caller ID and hurried to answer. “Hello.”

“Evelyn Chandler here… with Tessera Bridge Systems.”

“Thanks for calling back. I’m Nick Fashola. I’m new to the Alderwick Private Management team.. My aunt and uncle are the owners. My cousin rescued me from a boring desk job in Denver and asked me to look into a little problem.”

“I see… Let me guess… A system I designed is messed up.”

“Understatement… The whole operation is bugged with total failure on two of the subsystems.”

“When I set the systems up,” Evelyn replied, “I told Mr. Fenn this was not a once-and-done solution. I explained that there would need to be human oversight.”

Nick nodded. “He understands that. Naturally, Alderwick’s main functions take priority, and let’s just say no one was minding the store.”

“And now you are?”

“Paradigm shift,” Nick replied. “I’ll be the face and boots on the ground. The AI systems will back me up.”

“That’s a big shift,” Evelyn replied. “What’s the ask for Tessera?”

“Alderwick wants you hands-on going forward.”

Nick went on to explain that they had set up a new entity to rebuild the failed operation and run it differently. They created Alderwick Gulf Properties, LLC, as the base of operations.

“There are four residential units here. You’d get one of them to call your own. You can run Tessera from there while keeping your office in Houston. Most of your staff works remotely anyway.”

“Alderwick wants me to give up my Houston condo and move?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“What kind of facilities are you talking about?”

Nick switched the call to FaceTime and gave her a tour of the condo unit that could be hers. She had no complaints.

“So,” Nick replied, “Alderwick wants you to get everything back up and running and then be on call to help me keep it that way.”

Evelyn told him to send her a detailed proposal and let her think about it. “But it’s difficult to say no to anything Alderwick asks for.”

“I understand that completely,” Nick replied.

POOLSIDE by Ailana Geven Keller

There’s a sign that says guests under eighteen must be accompanied by an adult. I volunteered.

Kel and Emily are swimming. Actually, they are standing in the three-foot section by the edge of the pool, looking at pictures of Cadillac Ranch on a phone and trying to decide where it lands on the Yawn Meter.

I talked to Emily in the car today about how fully the two of them have thrown themselves into the sidebar articles. I said I was worried it would stop being fun and feel like a chore.

“This is another dream of mine you’re making come true,” she replied. “I know we’ll have to pace ourselves, but right now we’re excited. Plus, what else are we supposed to do when the rest of you are working? Like, reels are only interesting for so long, right?”

I’m sure I was as shocked to hear her say that as she was the first time I said it to her! I told them to plan some breaks to do other things.

She thought that was an invitation to tease me. “Okay, I guess we can schedule some time to swap spit once in a while.”

I’m sure I was as shocked hearing her say that as she was when I said it!

“Stick to your sidebars. I’m not ready for you to be grown up.”

So, on to other things…

Sasha and Jasmine met with the wardrobe people. That’s all going to plan. Jason and Geoni are checking and rechecking the camera gear. I’d help, but…

You know… adult required at the pool…

I’ll be back later. Until then, have a great day.

NEW VARIATION by Olivia Overmark

I told Vanessa I was coming to lunch and told her I’d call Izzy Duffy with an update.I went to Sea Glass, got my salad, and then called.

“Izzy, this is Olivia Overmark. Vanessa Lenen from Shoreline Health & Wellness asked me to call.”

“Hi,” she replied. “What can I do for you?”

“There’s a slight change to the caseworker plan she told you about. I’m supposed to be the other half of the RECOVER-30 Traumatic-Injury Follow-Up Study.”

“So you’re a doctor.”

“Yes. Do you remember the basics of the program?”

“IIf the grant comes through and I get hired, we’d be tracking how people recover after serious injuries once they leave the hospital. We’d look at all the things after discharge that can affect recovery.”

I said that was correct, then explained that, based on the number of qualifying trauma cases in the county, the grant would fund one half-time doctor and one half-time caseworker. Izzy said that it wouldn’t work for her to be half-time.

“That’s why I called. Vanessa has the other half of my position covered with other duties. But for you, she’s got another idea…and I mean you specifically.”

I explained that having her on staff would allow us to complete the application and move the trauma grant into final review.

“So, to that end, there’s funding available from other sources to cover the remaining half of the position at the clinic. You’d be a full-time Shoreline employee, and your position would be funded in different ways. The new idea is that you’d provide post-visit care coordination for people treated at the walk-in clinic and not transported to a hospital.”

“I’d be doing treatment planning?”

“No, that would be medical. You’d be handling the things that would help ensure a smooth path to recovery. Also, for locals, making follow-up calls to see how they are doing.”

“And that would make the position full-time?”

“It would, and… you could start right away. The RECOVER-30 grant application is waiting on the caseworker’s credentials before it can move into final administrative review. We’d like to get you on board as soon as possible.”

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Everything is ready for the shoot tomorrow. Emily and Kel finished their Yawn Meter article for Cadillac Ranch without dropping anything to the bottom of the pool. I adulted.

At one point, Kel came over to where I was. “What do you think of these images?”

They were solid. Very editorially composed and technically spot on. A few were very artistic and creative. I told him, and he seemed pleased.

“This is our first article that we did 100% on the iPhones,” he added. “She did a lot of speech-to-text, then went back and edited.”

Telling me seemed to be enough; he didn’t really wait around for any more feedback, so I didn’t stop him.

With the photo shoot tomorrow, Micah volunteered to be Kel and Emily’s adult. They decided they’d stick with the shoot for a couple of hours in the morning, then go back to the hotel.

In light of that, Micah declared that he, Jasmine, Kel, and Emily would sit together for dinner tonight. “We’ll go to the kids’ table, and the adults can do boring stuff at the grown-up table.”

The grown-up table is actually a booth and a nearby table where Josh and Geoni are sitting. Conversation in the booth has been mostly related to a call I got this afternoon from Emily’s caseworker, Caroline Rivera.

She was checking in. She knows we’re working on the road, but she mostly wanted to review the living arrangements. There was a lot said, explained, and clarified about the third-floor separate living space for Emily. She wasn’t a big fan.

In the end, she backed down and said, “Okay, I’m just going to report that the housing is safe and satisfactory. Yes, it’s much better than sleeping behind a van. But otherwise, I strongly feel—as a mother and a professional—that the whole experience would be better if you shared the same front door.”

Back to Micah—he suggested we trade condos with him and Jasmine. “Just cut a hole in the ceiling and add a staircase. Then you’ll have the same front door. Problem solved.”

Clay and Jason think that’s a possibility, actually. More to follow on this, for sure.

May blessings follow you wherever you go.

Good night.

GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller. Good morning, Ailana. Full on authentic slice of life, huh? The kind where you can't push snooze because you are traveling and you're on a schedule, you mean? Okay. Better get moving, then. I'm smiling. Switching the manettino dial from Odyssey mode to Creative mode. I like it. I half expect the RV to change shape as beds roll up and computer stations slide down Backdrops drop down from the sides. Ready for creative action. We look forward to the check in later when you have no idea! Thanks for the bonus image. And. Thanks for posting!

SERVER TROUBLES. Sure, Nick. Hard for you to say no to Alderwick because your aunt and uncle own it. Must be more beneficial than merely a free condo, Ms. Chandler. Financial incentives must be pretty strong for you to consider just up and leaving Houston. And, um, just where in the Gulf Coast will this new condo be located? Hmm? Please keep us in the loop for this developing story.

POOLSIDE by Ailana Geven Keller. I'm sure you did. I would have volunteered to, too. This conversation was a little funny, wasn't it, ma'am? You're not ready for her to grow up? She's seen way more than a kid should have , coming from her background. I get it, you want her to take her time, and proceed more naturally. But, since she and Kel came into your lives, those lives have changed drastically. Hopefully, for the better. For you, for them. Hopefully, the changes will be made permanent. Aren't you glad you volunteered to be the adult at the pool? Thanks for the bonus image.

NEW VARIATION by Olivia Overmark. Good afternoon, Dr. Overmark. That all sounds great, Doctor. But what is the duration of the grant? I'm sure Izzy and probably Kent don't want to move her, and then a year later, the grant is not renewed. That happens a lot. I assume you've already thought of this. Thanks for the update.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller. I think Kel and Emily are getting more comfortable around you guys. The dynamics are shifting toward more regular kid behavior. When kids first come into a new environment, they are on their best behavior. As it becomes apparent, they are in a new permanent home, they begin to relax and act more like regular teenagers. It looks to me like Kel and Emily are beginning to do this. Good luck! Cut a hole in the ceiling? Didn't the lady already agree to your current arrangement? Oh well, I will stay tuned to see where THIS goes! Thanks for the bonus images.
