Chapter 3.1.25: GRAY DAY by Hannah Madison
Today’s lesson is about choices and consequences.
I looked at the weather app and thought I had time to make it to the market and back. I guess the rain is using a different app than I am.
When I decided what to wear and what not to wear this morning, I wasn’t thinking about all the possible situations I might face, or what the consequences of that decision might be.
When I tried to beat the rain, I didn’t consider what would happen if I guessed the weather poorly.
And…
When Emma moved out, I didn’t think about the consequences of that, either. The apartment feels really big and empty now. When Merritt comes to visit, it feels like we’ve snuck off where no one can see us. We leave the door open, but still…
I miss Emma. I miss all the little things she did. Breakfast in the community room isn’t the same without her.
I miss her saying “Y’all, there’s a lot more sausage biscuits ready. Come an’ get some.
And her pancakes… And her laugh. I miss her telling me I look fancy when I’d leave for work. I miss her helping me understand what others are thinking and feeling.
I miss her.
I called her this morning. I’m calling her again when I get home.

Chapter 3.1.26: NO KNOWN THREATS by Mara Voss
We’re in Galveston. We’ve been in the Houston area for a little while now, and Shay and Devon have shown up on social media a few times since we got here.
Of course, if this were going public on Shay’s social media, I would mean where we were two days ago.
If it looks like Evan and I are living a dream, that is because we are. Living as if you are the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the world sort of goes like that.
Most of the time, it feels lavish and indulgent. Beautiful hotels. Nice restaurants. Beach pictures. A rental car. A budget that makes me feel like I should whisper before using it.
And since nobody has ever actually tried to hurt Shay—which means me, as far as the internet knows—it can start to feel almost pretend.
Then Ronald Regent sends the morning text.
Alert Status: No known threats.
Not “no threats.”
No known threats.
There is a difference big enough to put your shoes back on.
Meanwhile, Evan and I have decided to scale back on the per diem a little. When we are appearing as Shay and Devon, we’ll order the steak and lobster and do the thing properly. When we are trying not to be noticed at all, we are more chicken tenders and drive-through people.
We see no point in going overboard just to prove we can. We figure if Ryder Family Protective Services notices we are being careful with the money, that probably works in our favor.
Also, we did have one close encounter with the media about an hour ago. We’ll be leaving the Houston area now.
