TIME TO LEAVE from 2026-07-11
Saturday in Galveston had settled into the kind of beach day that made hiding feel almost unreasonable.
Mara left the towels and blanket for a minute, partly to stretch her legs and partly because sitting still made her think too much. Evan stayed behind with the sunscreen, the drinks, and the comfortable illusion that this was only a normal beach afternoon.
Near the surf, a young woman was trying to ride a skimboard. She took a few running steps, dropped the board onto the thin sheet of water, and tried to hop on before it outran her. The first attempt ended with a stumble. The second was better. By the third, she made it almost six feet before laughing and falling sideways into the foam.
Mara smiled.
Then a voice behind her called out, “Shay Ryder?”
She turned.
The camera was already up.
For half a second, Mara forgot how to breathe. Then training, instinct, and the strange habit of being someone else all arrived at once. She gave the celebrity news photographer a small, polite smile.
“Yes?”
The interview was brief. Where were she and Devon staying? Were they enjoying Texas? Was the Ryder family planning anything public this summer?
Mara answered carefully, lightly, and not very specifically.
When the photographer finally left, Mara stood alone on the sand for one more breath.
Then she turned back toward Evan.
It was time to leave the Houston area.
TOO MUCH DUST—from 2026-07-10
Emma’s efforts to clean out the barn had resulted in good progress for the barn. But it had left her and her clothes covered in dirt and old straw.
She thought she’d rather not carry all that into her house. Instead, she decided to shake off what she could in the barn, then go directly to the washing machine once she got inside.
