After the capability-denial mission, the Deep Secret team returned to Panama City, Panama, and resumed their cover roles as employees of a software company:

Gavin actually wrote some code, but it was for the team’s use. He added some new bots to crawl unindexed web forums looking for hints about cartel activity.

A few days after getting back to the city, Laylana and Mason decided to take a day off together. They took the ferry to Taboga, explored the island for a while, then ended up at Restaurante Playa Honda.

They knew when they left the city that they wanted to talk about their relationship. With orders placed, Mason decided it was time.

“So, we’re back on the payroll, working together in the field. And we love each other.”

Laylana smiled. “It’s complicated, isn’t it?”

Mason nodded and took a sip of his iced tea. “How different would the missions be if we weren’t in a relationship?”

Laylana looked away for a moment, then looked down. “Honestly, when we’re in the middle of an op, I don’t think about it. Seriously. It’s like you’re just another member of the team with a role to play, and I have to think about how to keep everyone alive. Like we all do… but…”

She didn’t say anything else, so Mason responded. “That’s how it should be. I don’t feel like our relationship compromises the mission.”

Laylana smiled again. “Then we keep going.”

Mason paused as the server passed by to tell them their orders were coming along soon.

“Lay,” Mason then said, “the next thing to consider is whether getting married would make any difference.”

Laylana nodded. “I’ve wondered the same thing.”

“Then, let’s keep thinking about that. If it won’t put our mission at risk… then…”

“Yeah…” Laylana took a deep breath. “Let’s think about this seriously. I… Well, let’s see how it feels after a couple more missions.”
