STEADY PROGRESS—from 2026-07-13
Emma got home a little after 6:00, tired from classes and work, with Noah still on shift until 10.
She turned into the driveway, looked around to make sure there was nothing to be concerned about and got out of her truck. She opened the gate and pulled through.
She went back to the gate, closed it, and it clicked shut just like it was supposed to do. She locked it, drove her truck on up to the house.
She let herself inside, took off her office clothes, then looked out at the yard.
It wasn’t terrible yet.
That was the important word: yet.
If they let it go much longer, it would become one of those jobs that felt bigger than it was supposed to be. So Emma decided she would cut half of it tonight and half tomorrow. That seemed reasonable. Responsible, even.
She pulled the outfit she had cleaned the barn in out of the dryer: the tattered gray shirt, the black shorts, the clothes already surrendered to dirt and sweat more than once. They’d be alright for another duty.
She put on her old sneaker and went outside, checked the mower, and gave the cord a pull.
It started right up. It was new, thanks to Kent Marlon and Izzy. That felt like a big blessing.
For the next hour, she worked back and forth across the grass, not trying to make everything perfect, just trying to make it better. By the time she finished the half she had chosen, her hair was messy, her shirt clung to her skin, and the evening heat had settled on her like a damp blanket.
But the yard looked better. And that mattered.
Emma kicked off her sneakers, carried her tea to the porch steps and sat down barefoot in the golden light, letting the breeze touch her skin before she went inside to the air-conditioning. She was hot, tired, and sweaty, but she was also satisfied in a way she did not know how to explain.
The work was done. At least half of it.
Noah would be home in a few hours. She had time to cool off, shower, and make him something to eat before he came through the door.
For a minute, though, she just sat there on the steps, watching the light fade across their yard, feeling like the house, the grass, the gate, the work, and the waiting were all pieces of the same new life.
And somehow, it felt good to belong to it.
