LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD—Heather May
Heather May had been looking down the road since she 2001 when was twenty-one.
The first time, she was running from a college boy who took her time, attention, and everything else, then left Kansas City with a diploma, a new job, and no reason to look back. Heather looked back once—long enough to understand. Then she climbed into a tractor-trailer and pointed herself somewhere else.
That heartbreak was not her last. There had been men on the road who liked the idea of a woman who could handle forty tons until they realized she did not need them handling her.
One wanted her to quit driving. Another wanted her truck sold. One had been kind enough that she still wondered about him, but wondering was not regretting.
Mostly, the road asked less of her than people did.
It asked her to stay awake, watch the weather, check the mirrors, and get the freight where it belonged.
Heather spent her days behind the wheel of a white Freightliner while cities rose and disappeared beyond the glass. Her eyes stayed ahead—on brake lights, lane markers, storm clouds, and whatever life had not shown her yet.
Most nights, she slept in the sleeper with trucks idling around her. She washed at travel plazas, ate from paper sacks, and kept clean clothes folded tight.
Sometimes she paid for a cheap motel because she wanted a real shower and room to turn over in bed.
More rarely, she returned to her one-bedroom condo in Independence. It held mail, spare clothes, and a kitchen she barely used. She called it home, though most of her life happened between deliveries.
Tonight, she sat barefoot on a motel bed outside Amarillo. The air conditioner rattled. Red light slipped around the curtains. Her blouse hung over a chair. Tomorrow’s route waited on her phone beside bad coffee.
She thought about the lives she might have lived, then listened to the highway beyond the wall.
Heather smiled.
“I’m content.”
