Chapter 3.1.35: BUSINESS TRIP by Rebecca Charm

I have to say I’m impressed with Nick Fashola. He owned up to everything that went wrong and is going out of his way to make it right.

He paid Tom Jenkins three months of rent in advance—August, September, and October—for eight team members. He reimbursed Addison, Jacob, Hannah, Merritt, Izzy, Kent, Emma, and Noah for their June and July rent, as well.

Paul and I took Merritt’s advice. As he said, it was a no-brainer to add Caleb, Chloe, Aidan, and Liza to the team. They are good kids, and they are right here, ready, able, and willing.

Paul and I have also been moved to a different cost center for our now-doubled salaries. Nick explained that his pay comes from Benevolence Worldwide, and since we are now part of the leadership team overseeing all four mission groups, it made sense to shift us there, too.

In an earlier comment, Hannah said this doesn’t feel like a chain of command. Rather, it feels more like a delegation of duties. To oversimplify, Nick handles legal and financial matters, Paul handles logistics and support, and I handle tech, records, and reports.

Paul and I still manage the Pay It Forward Society team here in Brooklyn, too. Nothing changed about that.

But me doing tech… as in figuring out how to fix a failed AI matrix someone else designed, coded, and trained.

To that end, Paul and I are flying to Brownsville in a couple of hours, then heading to South Padre Island to meet with Evelyn Chandler, who set up the virtual servers and taught them how to talk to each other.

We don’t know how long we’ll be there. Unrelated, we also noted that Izzy and Kent have moved there. We’ll definitely visit them and see if they’ve found any amazing places to eat.

Chapter 3.1.36: LIKE A PHOENIX by Mara Voss

New day, new motel. We are still in the area of Port Aransas, Texas. Evan still doesn’t want to venture too far from a bathroom, but like a phoenix, he’s risen once more. He feels fine otherwise.

He said we probably could travel, go to the beach, or whatever.

I said, “Why push it?”

I’m at the pool. Evan just went to the motel room to get some sodas, so I thought I’d check in.

I can’t say I regret the downtime. To be honest, a day of nothing felt pretty good back on Thursday. Friday was pretty slow, too—basically, we packed up, checked out, and found a different motel in the same area.

I know you might think we’re living the dream life. We travel and see things, and we get paid to do that.

But there’s always an undercurrent of what if. I’ve said before that “no known threats” is different from “no threats.” If you think about it, the heiress to a family in the top ten on the Forbes billionaires list makes an attractive target, should someone have sketchy plans.

So we keep moving. Every few days, we post something about where we were a few days earlier, and then we move on.

Nevertheless, if you said Evan and I were pretty lucky, I’d have to say you are right. Not only the job, but finding each other. This could have been torment had we not ended up liking each other.
