THE CHECK WILL CASH by Laci Morehouse

Today is one of those mornings when I have to ask a lot of questions before I can get going. It happens rather frequently, to be honest.

Where am I?

Why am I here?

What time do I have to be somewhere else?

As I lay somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, I played back the last things I remembered.

I had been in Dallas taking notes from a client about everything the developers had misunderstood. In their words: “They botched the whole job.” After four grueling hours, I uploaded all my notes to SharePoint and went to the airport.

Cleveland it is. Not really known as the fashion capital of the world, but this was a premium-pay job. Half a day, actually—$500 for a few wardrobe changes.

I’ve worked with this company before. Avant-garde stuff that I’ve never seen used anywhere. I’ve never even figured out where it went, to be honest. I remembered that they had asked me to be in Cleveland today or Denver on Wednesday. Today fit my schedule.

I checked the time, reset the alarm, and closed my eyes. Fifteen minutes, no more.

I had made the call early. Later, at the studio, I put on the outfit they had waiting for me. One of the assistants led me to the set.

Today is one of those modeling jobs where I just don’t ask any questions. It happens rather frequently, to be honest.

The check will cash.
