GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller
When I got back from my walk last night, Geoni and I sat on the patio for a little while talking. Her stock photo catalog came up in the conversation.
“Would you go up to the dunes with me in the morning? The beach morning glories should be blooming.”
Beach morning glory is one of those little Island things you can walk past without realizing how special it is. The vines crawl right across the sand, taking salt, heat, and wind like they’re nothing and helping hold the dunes together.
Depending on the species, beautiful white or pink-purple trumpet flowers open in the morning. Geoni absolutely wanted to take pictures while the light was soft and the blooms were open—the color against the sand and Gulf was impossible for her to resist.
We brought the Highlander up near UFO Beach and started shooting. Naturally, we took pictures of a lot of other flora, too. And, as is her habit, Geoni decided I needed to do some modeling for her.
“Just for practice,” she said.
Over the years since I showed her how to turn on my DSLR, her photos of me have proven to be creative and daring. Some of your favorite pictures of me have come from her ideas.
I played along for a while and then turned the tables. I matched her ideas with similar ones of my own. Out here in the middle of nowhere, we relaxed and just enjoyed creating some art.
And memories.
When I look back on 2024, the memories we made during the summer we met are amazing—fresh, new, and exciting.
I believe that when I look back on 2026, these memories will feel like grown-up versions of the ones from back then. We know each other. We trust each other. And we share similar responsibilities now.
Speaking of which… We’re ten slow miles away from home.
I’ll be back later. See you then.

I DO HAVE A JOB by Ailana Geven Keller
No one has questioned how I use my time, but I feel the need to say this: I am a writer, and I do have work in progress!
Geoni and I got back from the beach about two hours ago. Along with fooling around and taking pictures of each other, she photographed many plants besides the morning glories.
Meanwhile, I photographed gulls and other birds. She’ll add those images to her catalog. Every little bit helps.
I heard from Meridith Sinclair about the Cloudfall novel. “Ailana, I’m really sorry. My summer just hasn’t unfolded as I expected, but the idea isn’t dead.”
More on that later. SShe floated the idea that she and I might meet face-to-face with her creative friend Will Robertson. I think that would be a good thing.
Tomorrow, it’s all hands on deck at the studio. Just a reminder: Naomi is coming and will be modeling with us. She says she thinks our studio will be relaxed and not make her feel pressured. The wardrobe for the shoot is arriving with her tonight. The theme is “Black-and-White Styles.”
Before I get back to turning ideas into words, I’ll add that Jasmine and Kaylee fly out to Denver tonight. They have a big shoot lined up for Wednesday.
Kent is going to wrangle Emily and Jenna again to handle the cleaning jobs. Emily and Jenna are going to wrangle Hudson so Isaac and Kent can take care of some handyman jobs. Dad also has two faucets to replace after work.
Wednesday is going to be a big day for everyone. That’s it for now. See you tonight.

A chapter featuring Evelyn Chandler is included in the Crossroads post for today. It is connected to the server problems of the Pay It Forward Society, so it best fits there.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller
Izzy and Kent joined Emily, Jason, and me for dinner tonight. They both said they love it here. I told them that made me really happy, though I wasn’t surprised.
Dinner was simple. Jason and Emily grilled bone-in chicken while Izzy and I prepared the salad and vegetables inside. Kent was in his kitchen creating what his mother called Bronx Baked Beans. He didn’t say what the recipe was, but he did say honey was the secret ingredient.
He can make them anytime!
After we cleaned everything up, Jason told me something Emily had said. “Ailana doesn’t think she’s good enough to be my guardian.”
Wow. The little doubts I’ve shared have betrayed me.
Jason continued, quoting Emily: “She’s still thinking about how our mother ditched her. That had to hurt. I’m lucky I figured out how bad she was before I let her get to me. Ditching our mother was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Wow again.
“Ailana,” Jason said, “she might be on to something. You do sort of see yourself through Melinda’s eyes. You weren’t a girl who wasn’t good enough for her mother. It wasn’t you. She was the one who was messed up. And your dad isn’t the man she claimed he was, either.”
There’s a lot to think about there. I’m not ready to go deep into it right now. I’ll do that thing where I ignore it and smile my way into tomorrow.
Which is, as I said, going to be huge for everyone. So, let me close this chapter.
May you know the difference between what people say and what is true. Cling to the truth and reject the falsehoods.
Good night.
Be your best you!
