BEACH DATE by Min Aurora

The clinic schedule gave me Saturday off this week. Elias had the day off, too, so we’re spending it together.

We started with brunch, then worked our way to the beach. He sent me ahead to find us a spot while he packed a cooler with ice and sodas.

We’re going to stay here for a couple of hours, then head to his apartment—he rents here on South Padre Island—to shower and change for dinner. Nothing fancy… We’re still deciding, but Viva is on the list.

I see him coming with the cooler, so I’ll wrap up by saying…

Life is pretty good right now. Working with Olivia and Vanessa is great. Our new social worker, Izzy Duffy, is excellent! And having Elias in my life is amazing.

EXTRA WHEELS by Jenna Mercer

I suppose you’ve heard of being the third wheel on a date. Well, if there are two third wheels, I’m calling it being extra wheels.

Dad, Olivia, Gabe, and I are at Clayton's Beach Pier just killing a little time before dinner. Last night when I got back from working for First Call Property Services, Dad had an idea.

“Olivia and I thought we’d treat you and Gabe to dinner tomorrow. What do you think about that?”

Sounds like Gabe and I are the extra wheels.

The first image is Dad, me, and Olivia. That’s Olivia Overmark, a woman Dad pretends is just some woman he knows who happens to come over three or four nights a week to help me make dinner for dad, a woman he just happens to know who hangs out with me, keeps a change of clothes and a toothbrush in my bathroom, and who sits around talking with Dad until it’s almost MY curfew.

You know… just your regular NPC woman… hardly more than a stranger who wandered in off the street!

I want to add that she does not sleep over. She just keeps a set of scrubs here in case she gets called in for work, plus some shorts and a T-shirt in case she comes straight from the clinic and wants to change.

Anyway…

The second image is of me and my boyfriend, Gabe. We might just be juniors in high school, but at least we know what we are to each other.

Dad went ahead to Ola Seaside Grill to make sure we could get a table, and Olivia took our picture. Gabe isn’t always subtle about sharing his ideas. Out loud.

“Dr. Overmark, Jenna says you’re going to be her mom one of these days.”

Olivia had literally zero reaction—I’m screaming.

She smiled and said, “Well, that’s really not up to Jenna to say, but I can’t imagine any young lady I’d rather have as a daughter.”

Now, I’m thinking she said that because she likes Dad and I’m his daughter. Like if she gets him, she gets me, too. Just a guess!

I guess the first step is for them to stop acting like they’re not dating—and def, def stop acting like I have any say in it!
