Chapter 3.1.46: ROOMIES by Hannah Madison
So far, I’ve had zero complaints about having Addison as a roommate. In fact, it has been really nice.
Today, we’re at the pool at The Havens, a small courtyard apartment complex Tom Jenkins owns in Sheepshead Bay, in southern Brooklyn.
“Most of the people living there are retired, so the pool is hardly used. It also has a nice locker room that connects to a little exercise room no one uses, either.”
So here we are, having a roommate outing. I’m really coming to appreciate Addison as a person.
I miss Emma, of course, and we talk a few times each week.
But Addison has surprised me in a lot of ways. She is a much deeper thinker than you’d guess if all you know about her is her super energetic, enthusiastic, and sometimes quirky way of approaching life.
No one is overlooked by her care and concern. She reaches out to everyone and makes sure they are included—hoping they feel like they are part of whatever is going on.
By now, all of the new people seem to feel like they’ve been part of Crossroads forever. Chloe and Caleb have been coming around for a while.
The new guy working at Habitat Housing, Aidan Red Elk, seems to be fitting right in, too. And that is exactly how Addison wants things.
“I think,” Addison said as we were wading in the pool, “the new Pay It Forward Society team is going to be great. Of course, we miss the others, but Liza, Chloe, Aidan, and Caleb are great, too. I’m actually looking forward to our next mission.”
We haven’t heard anything from Rebecca or Paul since they went to Texas, and Nick is really counting on Rebecca to figure out how to get all of the systems back up and running.
So, with that, I’ll close this post. Addison and I will hang out here for a while longer.

Chapter 3.1.47: AT THE KRAKEN by Mara Voss
Evan and I were planning to spend one more night in South Padre Island. The plan was to leave a big, visible trail tonight and then hit the road for Laredo, Texas, tomorrow—a little over four hours away.
We decided to try a local restaurant with a cool name: The Kraken.
We had just gotten inside when someone spoke. “Shay? What are you doing here?”
I thought we’d run into paparazzi, and since we were planning to leave tomorrow, that would be okay. I turned around and answered.
“Devon and I are just…” Then I recognized the woman who’d spoken.
She had been one of the brides at the wedding in Memphis. I was rifling through my memory for her name, so I kept talking.
“…traveling around the country. We’re thinking of visiting all the corners of the U.S. So far, we’ve hit Key West and the Rio Grande.”
By then, the woman had processed everything and realized what was going on.
She whispered, “You look so much like… like you’re having a really good time.”
Kudos to her for letting the decoy moment continue. “How would you like me to treat you and…”
I still couldn’t think of the names, so I played it off. “… your dear hubby to dinner?”
I figured Shay would do that.
“That would be great. I can’t believe we ran into you. You’re a long way from Brooklyn.”
We got a table and talked in code a little about what Evan and I were doing. Rebecca and Paul told us far more about what had brought them from New York City than Evan and I told them about our trip.
So I’ll spare you all the details and small talk. The food was great, though. As interesting as the name was, the food was even better.
Having made ourselves conspicuous at The Kraken, the plan changed. We went back to the hotel, packed, posted some pictures on Shay’s Facebook page, and left.
We’re heading to Laredo tonight.
