GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m about two and a half hours away from New York. I had a great day yesterday, and now I’m looking forward to meeting up with Jason and Emily.

The plan is to do some sightseeing today, and then I’ll connect with Meredith Sinclair to talk about the Cloudfall book. We want to get back to work on it soon.

Emily and Kel will start virtual classes at UT High School on August 10. Their friends will start later, on August 17, at Port Isabel Early College High School.

We’ll be home in time for Kel and Emily to have some end-of-summer fun with their friends. As of now, we plan to fly home on Wednesday.

I suppose that’s enough for a morning check-in. Since I still have a couple of hours, I believe a little more napping is in order.

See you soon!

TOURING THE BIG APPLE by Ailana Geven Keller

Jason and Emily met me at the airport. Now we’re spending the day visiting some of the city’s major tourist attractions. We started with the Statue of Liberty.

But we’ve got a lot more to do today! Emily asked Gemini to make us a list of ten of New York City’s most popular attractions:

Times Square

Central Park

Brooklyn Bridge

Grand Central Terminal

Broadway and the Theater District

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Empire State Building

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

9/11 Memorial and Museum

Rockefeller Center

We’re going to see how many we can fit in—even if we only pass some of them and stop long enough to grab a photo.

Emily is already compiling notes for more Roadside Yawn Meter posts! She even has a first draft about Central Park that she said I could share.

Roadside Yawn Meter: Central Park, New York Cityby Emily Amos

Yawn Factor: Low—2 out of 10

Kid Verdict: Worth it: Central Park is New York City taking a break from being New York City. Trees, lakes, bridges, performers, snacks, dogs, and about seventeen ways to walk farther than planned.

Best Part: There was always something new around the next corner. My favorite was [add details]. Seeing the skyline above the trees was pretty cool.

Boring Part: Some parts were just walking. Then more walking. “It’s not much farther” is adult code for “I have no idea.”

Parent Warning: Bring water, wear real walking shoes, and use a map. The park is huge, and bikes, runners, carriages, and distracted tourists can all appear at once.

What Would Make It Better: Signs showing actual walking times between attractions—and maybe more shaded snack stops. [Add another idea.]

That’s it for now.I’m not going to post about every stop we make, but I think you get the idea—it’s going to be a busy day.

See you later tonight.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Ailana’s Journal | GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller—What a day! We didn’t hit all ten. We skipped a few, but it was still a long day.

We just drove through Broadway Theater District and the Theater District and past The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Grand Central Terminal. We saw the Empire State Building from a distance—many times!

The day was great, but a hot soak makes it even better.

When we got back to the hotel, I sat with Emily for a moment. She talked about the day casually, then suddenly got quiet.

Her eyes filled with tears, but she forced a smile.

“What’s the matter?”

“Today was great.” She wiped her eyes. “Is this what normal girls have when they go on vacation with their family?”

“Maybe some do…” I replied. “I never had anything like this growing up. I’m glad I get to share it with you now.”

When I tucked her in—as if you actually tuck a 16-year-old in—Jason announced that he had just filled the tub. “Jump in.”

I took off my makeup, undressed on the spot, and climbed in.

May you know what it feels like to belong with others who love you, and may you share meaningful moments with them.

Good night.

Be your best you!
