MORNING WALK by Cindi Curtis Allen

Today’s chapter is brought to you by my husband. It’s a follow-up to our conversation at The Arcade.

“You know how you said you think of yourself as a mountain trail girl? How about we get up early and take a trail walk?”

So we did.

We’re at the Fletcher Creek Greenway, which is a biking and walking path that the Bartlett Parks and Recreation Department maintains. It’s not far from our house at all.

We drove over to the corner of Yale Road and Brother Boulevard, parked, and started walking.

There’s another park near us, too. Much more rustic! It’s called Nesbit Park, and it has several hiking and biking trails that are not paved. We’ll go there another time, for sure, but… Well, it’s been a while since either of us have taken a hike, and we thought this would be a good start.

Even if you go to the gym and use the treadmill, actually walking on a trail is a little different. Building up endurance and becoming consistent is a process.

It is a little like walking with God. It sounds gentle until you remember walking is repetitive. It is not one dramatic choice where music swells and everybody understands you forever. It is step, step, step. It is how I answer the email. How I speak when I am tired. How I treat Michael when anxiety has made me prickly. How I use my time, my money, my words, my attention, and even my little patch of garden.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 NIV says, “we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living.”

That comforts me because Paul does not make pleasing God sound like a pose. He makes it sound like a way of life.

Some days, walking faithfully looks impressive. Most days, it looks ordinary. Keep going. Tell the truth. Do the work. Love the person in front of you. Pull the weed. Wash the cup. Pray before the spiral gets too loud.

A life pleasing to God is not built only in big moments.

It is walked into existence, one obedient step at a time.
