CHECKING IN by Camila Lopez

I’ve been outside for about an hour, and I think that is enough sun for one day.

I’m off today, which means nobody is calling me unless something has gone very wrong—or somebody forgot I’m off.

Police work can be strange. A few days ago, I was sent to check on a “suspicious person” standing perfectly still near a closed beach-access gate. The caller was very concerned because the person had not moved in almost an hour.

It was a life-size cardboard pirate somebody had carried away from a souvenir shop display and propped against the fence.

I still had to photograph it, write down what happened, and help return the pirate to his place of employment. Happy to report, the subject was cooperative.

Tonight, I’m going to Blackbeard’s for dinner. I like going there by myself because it never feels awkward. There are always people coming and going, the televisions give you something to watch, and nobody acts as though a woman sitting alone must be waiting for someone. I can order dinner, watch part of a game, listen to the conversations around me, and just enjoy being off duty.

I haven’t decided what I’m eating yet. That is a problem for future Camila.

For now, my hour in the sun is officially over. I’m going inside to shower, shave my legs, cool down, and get ready for dinner.
