DO WHAT IT SAYS by Cindi Curtis Allen
I’m taking a few minutes to check in before the day starts.
Michael is already on calls, but my office is in Colorado, so I still have an hour before I’m officially supposed to start. I can sit here with my Bible, drink my coffee, and pretend Monday will approach gently.
It probably will not.
The weekend was good. Noah had to work, but Emma came to church with us by herself. She talked about school and her job at Southwest Tennessee Community College, and all is going well. She is tired, but tired because life is full is not the same as tired because life is falling apart.
Work feels steady, too. My main job has its usual rhythm, and what Jordan calls my side hustle—working for Roman—has been manageable. There are emails, calls, questions, documents, decisions, and things needing follow-up, but nothing is exploding.
Nevertheless…
I have had a fairly constant undercurrent of anxiety lately. Mostly, it is vague, which is the nature of GAD. Sometimes, though, it breaks through with my old favorite dysfunction: “You’re out of time. You should be doing something else. This isn’t what you’re supposed to be doing.”
I dealt with that for years, so it is hardly worth mentioning. I have not been overwhelmed. It is like wearing a hat. You know it is there, but you don’t think about it every second. Even after you take it off, you still feel where it was.
Oh, well… Moving on…
James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” NIV
That verse is beautifully plain. It does not ask me to solve everything in my mind before I obey. It does not say to wait until I feel peaceful, certain, rested, and confident.
It says do.
So today, I can do the next faithful thing. I can answer kindly, tell the truth, work honestly, and pray when anxiety comes instead of letting it drive the car.
Faith is not only what I believe while holding an open Bible.
It is what I do next.
I hope you have a good Monday. See you next time!
