A FEW MORE MINUTES

Heather May blinked twice and focused on the motel clock.

3:49 a.m.

Her iPhone alarm would go off in eleven minutes. Her intention was to get up and get going so that she could reach the Petro truck stop in West Memphis early enough to get a good parking space. The lot filled up fast, so getting started early on the roughly 485-mile leg of her trip made sense.

She blinked again.

3:50 a.m.

The day before had been plagued by construction delays and complete standstills caused by highway accidents. She had driven an hour longer than planned and stopped in El Reno, Oklahoma, an hour short of her intended destination.

She was tired.

She decided a half hour extra getting to West Memphis wouldn’t make any difference, but sleeping another thirty minutes would be nice.

She reached for her iPhone and changed the alarm from 4:00 to 4:30.
