GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Happy Friday! I’m looking forward to another productive day of work.

I need to be honest about something. The image with this chapter isn’t from today. It actually was from Wednesday, but after Jason took it, I decided to calm myself down, relax, and take some others for the post that day.

Today, I just couldn’t think of anything interesting to do for the image. Everything we took felt like a variation on something we’ve posted recently.

“Just post Wednesday’s shower image,” Jason replied. “It’s not like you grew extra ears since then.”

I decided to use it and figured talking about the decision would be sort of interesting. And I thought the image would be more interesting than the laundry room, which was my backup plan!

Not that laundry isn’t captivating!

Now that Emily’s hearing is a thing of the past, we have a few months until Kel’s adoption is final. We’ve not talked a lot about it, but we have sort of assumed we’d get away from SPI for a few days to gather more content ideas.

That’s not to say we’re done writing about the Route 66 trip! Not by a long shot.

But we do like to keep filling our notes folders so we can always be working on something. Sasha—with Jasmine’s help—does the heavy lifting for our project planning. She and I talked about it, and I gave her an idea I want to try.

She amended the idea with a caveat. “I’ll coordinate with Naomi and make sure we can still do the jobs she plans to send our way.”

Something about that felt really good. It’s like our content creation work has become a steady, ongoing part of what AGI Creative does.

That said, I’ll add that I have no idea what I’ll be doing at midday. I imagine I’ll be somewhere with my laptop.

I’m thinking of something for tomorrow, and I’ll share that later. That’s all for now. See you soon.

SURREAL by Vanessa Lenen

Something about what just happened hit differently for me. Once everything ended, I needed a little space to reset.

We had parked the Shoreline Mobile Clinic near the White Sands Street Beach Access and were a few hours into treating tourists for various vacation-induced problems. With Min and Dr. Overmark as part of the team, we’ve established a routine providing ongoing care for hotel staff and others who live in the area.

Olivia had just written refills for a housekeeping worker’s blood pressure meds when a man walked in very distressed.

He was wet, like he’d been swimming, but he had a small backpack over his shoulder. He didn’t say anything—he just collapsed into the closest chair to the door.

I was the first to reach him—he wasn’t moving air.

I looked at the lab tech. “Rafe, call 911.”

By this point, the man was unconscious, so I caught Rafe’s attention again. “Look around to see if anyone is with him.”

“He reeks of alcohol,” Olivia said.

Then she started giving me orders. We got him supine across the seats.

I looked for ID. There was a receipt in the outer pocket of the backpack that caught my eye. He’d had a platter of crab cakes and carb stuffed mushrooms.

“I’m guessing anaphylaxis,” Olivia said.

I checked for a medical alert bracelet or necklace—nothing. I looked at his phone for emergency medical information—he hadn’t set it up.

Olivia gave him epinephrine and secured his airway because she’s—you know—a surgeon and ER doctor. In the chart, it will say she intubated him. Then she monitored him until EMS arrived.

“What do you think happened?” I asked.

“My guess is the alcohol and shellfish combo plus a swim triggered FDEIA. Alcohol amplified the allergy."

Had he collapsed a few steps sooner, he would have been in the parking lot. A minute or so sooner, he’d have been on the beach.

But the ambulance arrived, and it transported a breathing man to the hospital.

So many things to think about, but how about this?

Set up the emergency medical information on your phone. It doesn’t take long, and you might need it someday.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Today’s end finds me back home and on the sofa. Jason and Emily are sort of tormenting me, by the way. But not really.

I was already in a bathrobe when Emily jumped in.v “Come on! Everyone knows you just wear those for the pictures. Put on something you might have had on before.”

“You want me to go back to the bedroom, get the tank top I had on earlier, and put it back on for the image?”

“Or get the one you’ll wear tomorrow.”

I decided to get the one I had on earlier. “Do you want me to put my jeans back on?”

Emily rolled her eyes. “Don’t go overboard!”

Jason got the camera and started posing me. Emily started fussing with the lighting. She moved the end table lamp around to different angles.

“How’s this?” she said.

“More to the right,” Jason replied.

Then, as she moved it, he said, “No, the other right… your right, Ailana’s left.”

“Now?”

“That’s perfect,” Jason said.

SNAP!

SNAP again.

Emily looked at the back of the camera. “Oh, Ailana… it’s perfect.”

I started to respond about the picture, but I went in a different direction.

“You know what’s perfect?” I asked. “Being a family and working together.”

She sort of froze in place, then she wept. Jason side-hugged her and she came over and hugged me.

“You’re right,” she whispered as she wiped her eyes. “This is pretty perfect.”

I’ll just close now. Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller. Good morning, Ailana. Um. What? I don't think I got all that, except you are reusing an earlier shower photo? And you'll be working today? Okay. Good luck and have a great day.

SURREAL by Vanessa Lenen. Hello Vanessa. I have always considered the Mobile Clinic to be a helpful service Shoreline provided. Today it was a godsend to that man. You all likely saved his life. As you noted, it was a surreal experience. But this just underscores the importance of your work. Thank you for posting, Vanessa. Thank you.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller. Well, that was certainly a different good night post. Emily was teasing YOU this time. Just like a younger sister would do. I'd say you're right about family. It feels right, now, since the hearing has been resolved, doesn't it? I bid you all a good night. ✨.
