GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Happy Saturday to everyone. I’m looking forward to a nice day, and I hope the same is true for you.

Over the years that I’ve been doing this, I’ve said more than once that I think there are stories to be told on every block of every town. I think that wherever there are people, there are stories if you stop to look for them. And I think that places can be stories of a different kind, too.

My midday post will come from a place. It’s literally just a few blocks south of here—another little corner of South Padre Island that I’ve passed by a few times and never mentioned.

Today, I’ll share it with you.

Tomorrow is the party, reception, or gathering—whatever you want to call it—that Sasha and Jasmine put together to celebrate the outcome of Emily’s hearing.

I think it has evolved. Monday, all the island kids go back to school, so for them, it’s a bit of an end-of-summer gathering.

Among the adults, there are a lot of dots to connect, so hang on.

Jasmine has invited her friend who runs the SwimFit factory, Sofia, to come with her boyfriend.

Izzy has invited Olivia, who she works with—and who is dating Jenna’s father—to come. Of course, Dan will come, too.

Brooks said that “Officer Lopez,” who has gotten to know all the kids, should come, and she’ll bring a date.

Dad has invited Evelyn. Evelyn and Izzy have invited Rebecca and Paul Charm.

I’ll stop at this point. I could just make a list of names!

So, I expect that tomorrow I’ll have quite a few images of a lot of people to share. And of course, there will be some stories to tell, too!

That’s all for now. I’ll check in later with my midday chapter!

BIRD SANCTUARY by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m at a place I’ve somehow never mentioned before—the South Padre Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary. It’s just south of where we live, over on the Laguna Madre side of the island.

Most people call it the Sheepshead lots. The Valley Land Fund bought six residential lots on West Sheepshead Street in 1999 and protected them as a stopover for migrating birds. They added native trees, shrubs and water features, and more than 300 bird species have been recorded there since!

And the location makes perfect sense. South Padre sits along a major migration route, and millions of birds pass through the island. For birds crossing the Gulf, a little patch of trees, fresh water, food and shelter can be exactly what they need after a long flight—or before continuing one.

The Laguna Madre side adds another piece to the puzzle. Wetlands, tidal flats and coastal vegetation already support an amazing variety of shorebirds, waterfowl and wading birds. So the sanctuary isn’t some random green patch. It’s a tiny refueling station placed right where traveling birds naturally want to stop.

Pretty cool for six little lots in the middle of town!

This is the kind of place that shows how a little effort and planning can create something of great value. Of course, the birds benefit! But for people interested in seeing nature up close, it’s a treasure!

I’ll be back tonight with an evening chapter, so watch for it. See you then.

DINNER DATE by Brooks McKenna

Months ago, I was standing behind the counter at Whataburger wishing this summer would be more fun than last year. It was!

I’ve always had friends, but things start to change when you get older. Not like I’m larping at being grown! But I’m sixteen, and things feel different.

This summer, three new kids moved to the island—Jenna, Emily, and Kel. I guess everything aligned just right for us to become friends. Then there’s Gabe and Mateo. I’ve known them for years, but last spring Mateo and I began talking.

Gabe and Mateo were already friends, so everything converged for the six of us to hit it off!

Another thing that’s different at sixteen is dating. Mateo and I started dating this summer. Having a boyfriend in middle school is just something to say you’re doing, really.

Mateo has a truck, so we can really go out and do things. We both have jobs, so we’ve even got a little money to spend.

Today, we decided to go halves on a nice end-of-summer date. We came to Gabriella's. It’s a family-friendly restaurant with pizza and Italian food. We even got an appetizer. (Maybe we ARE larping being grown!)

Tomorrow, there’s a party thing for Emily. I helped invite some people Emily knows from Youth Group, and Jasmine—she’s so awesome, by the way—took care of all the details.

Then—dum dum dum... creepy music—school starts on Monday.

The summer has flown by. And it lasted a lifetime. That’s how it goes when you’re experiencing new things all summer long.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

I could have titled this post “Blankets For All” and I almost did.

Jason and I were getting ready for bed, and I found a coffee mug in the bathroom. I grabbed a blanket, wrapped it around me, and carried the mug to the kitchen.

Emily was in her jammies getting water.

“Have you done your goodnight picture?” she asked.

“I was just going to take it.”

“Can I take it?” she asked.

“What do you have in mind?”

She looked at the bedroom. “Just like that. Stand by the wall or something.”

“Jason’s already in bed,” I said. “Put something on over your pajamas.”

I went back to the bedroom and told Jason Emily was coming in. He pulled the blankets up and covered himself.

Emily showed up—you can guess—with a blanket of her own draped over her pajamas like a bathrobe.

I handed her my iPhone and posed for the image. Ten seconds later, she handed me the phone.

“Goodnight, you guys,” she said. “See you tomorrow.”

I’m sharing this scene specifically because nothing about it was dramatic. What struck me was—actually—the fact that it wasn’t.

A chance encounter in the kitchen led to a little moment of connection over the task of making a post. For less than a minute, Emily and I—with Jason looking on—collaborated on a task I’ve done seven hundred or so days in a row at about this point in the day.

It was the way we shared it as a matter of routine—like saying, “Here… let me help you fold the towels”—that hit me. I think that’s what normal family life feels like.

May you see the deeper meaning in the routine moments you share with those you love.

Good night.

Be your best you!
