POOL PARTY by Emma Vale

Some of y’all have been saying me and Noah ought to put in a pool in our yard. Well, I guess you could say Jordan agreed with you!

Noah’s working today, and Carter’s family is repainting the kitchen, so Jordan come out to Eads. “We need your truck.”

I could tell she was up to something, but I went along. We went into Oakland to the Walmart Supercenter and was parked before she told me her plan.

So here we are having a pool party! The hose is mainly what’s cooling us off. We got a blanket spread and a cooler of Cokes. Jordan made pita sandwiches and brought them for lunch, too, so we’re just going to hang out until Carter calls and says he’s done helping paint.

Noah gets off at five today, so if he’s up to it, all four of us will go get something for dinner. Me and Jordan saw a place in Oakland called A1 Pizza and thought it would be fun to try that.

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading my story! See you next time!

A DIFFERENT ROAD by Noah Vale

Good afternoon from outside Methodist North Hospital in Memphis.

I brought a nursing-home patient over this morning for a carotid duplex ultrasound. Basically, they’re checking the blood flow through the arteries in his neck and looking for narrowing or blockage. He’s inside getting that done now, so I’m waiting around until they’re finished and then I’ll take him back.

Something interesting happened while I was waiting.

I ran into a crew from a Shelby County Fire Department rig, and we got to talking. One of the guys asked if I’d ever thought about applying with Shelby County as a Firefighter Recruit.

I have now.

It would definitely be a bigger step than what I’m doing with medical transport. I’d still have to go through the hiring process, physical testing, the fire academy, and earn the certifications I’d need. Nobody is just handing me a fire helmet because I already know how to take a blood pressure and start and IV.

But what really got my attention was the long-term path.

With Shelby County, I could be doing emergency medical calls, fire suppression, rescue work, and a lot more training. There’s also a path for somebody coming in already licensed as an AEMT to become a paramedic while building a career with the department.

I’ve thought about becoming a paramedic for a while, but getting all the pieces to fall together never really worked out. This might be a way to finally start moving toward it.

I’m not making any decisions in a hospital parking lot, though.

I want to go home and talk to Emma first. We’re married now, and things that can change our future are things we decide together.

Knowing her, though, I’m pretty sure I know what she’s gonna say.

She’ll listen to me explain the whole thing, smile, and probably ask why I haven’t applied yet.

A pool is a pool, the most important thing is having fun. It looks promising the new job opportunity for Noah and it's good Emma has to to know and talk about it.

POOL PARTY by Emma Vale. Very funny! We meant a slightly larger one. But I guess you have to start somewhere. I love that your lawn chairs are actually in the pool, rather than beside it. Hi Emma and Jordan. Glad you two are able to find a little relief from this heat. Thanks for posting your story, Emma.

A DIFFERENT ROAD by Noah Vale. Hey Noah. I think this is a great idea. I know someone who does that very job and she loves it. I think you'd make a tremendous paramedic. You're right to ask Emma first, though, because it is a demanding road. Good luck with your decision. Thanks for your post.
