CATCHING SUN AND HAVING FUN—Extra Content from 2026-08-30
Emma and Jordan finally decided they had spent enough time taking turns between the pool, garden hose, and the lawn chairs. They carried a couple of towels farther into the yard, stretched them across the grass, and settled down where the afternoon sun could do its work. Emma decided it was one of those rare days when absolutely nothing needed to happen quickly.
Their conversation drifted toward the house and property. Emma told Jordan that she and Noah had grown to appreciate having enough land around them to feel removed from everything without actually being isolated. The backyard had become an extension of the house—a space where friends could hang around without anyone worrying about disturbing the neighbors.
Jordan rolled onto her elbows and looked across the lawn. She said she understood the appeal. There was something different about having trees and grass instead of looking out a window at somebody else's wall. Emma laughed and admitted that maintaining all of it occasionally made the smaller places she had lived seem attractive again, but she wouldn't willingly trade it.
Time disappeared while they talked. Sometimes they stretched out in the sun; sometimes one of them sat up and started another conversation. They talked about work, people they knew, places they wanted to go, and absolutely nothing important at all. Emma eventually realized the light had changed enough that the afternoon was getting away from them.
“We probably need to get moving,” she said.
Jordan checked the time and agreed. They still had showers, hair, clothes, and everything else between the backyard and dinner. More importantly, A1 Pizza was waiting, and neither woman had any interest in being responsible for delaying that part of the day's plans.
They picked up the towel and headed toward the house, agreeing that the experiment had been a success. Emma thought a swimming pool, sunshine, a good friend, and pizza afterward was a difficult combination to improve upon. Before they went inside, they agreed they'd find another warm day and do it again. Tennessee would eventually remember winter was coming, but they weren't going to hurry it along.
