A LITTLE LABOR DAY WORK by Cindi Curtis Allen
Happy Labor Day, friends. I hope today has given you at least a little room to slow down.
I’m mostly off today, but I slipped upstairs to my office for a while to clean up a few things before tomorrow. Nothing urgent—just some code to check, a database query I wanted to look at one more time, and a few loose ends that will make Tuesday morning easier if I deal with them now.
I actually enjoy this kind of work when there’s no clock pushing me. The house is quiet, Michael is doing his own thing, and I can work for an hour or two without feeling like I’m sacrificing the whole holiday.
Besides, we have company coming later. Jordan and Carter are coming over, and Emma and Noah are driving in from Eads.
We are absolutely not cooking out.
It’s in the high 90°Fs outside today, and the feels-like temperature is over 100. I love our backyard, but I do not love anybody enough to stand beside a grill in that. We’ll stay inside where the air conditioning lives, find something easy for dinner, and enjoy being together without trying to prove anything to the Tennessee summer.
That got me thinking about something simple today.
Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” (NIV).
I think friendship is one of those gifts that can become so ordinary we forget how valuable it is. Not every gathering needs a reason. Nobody has to accomplish anything. Sometimes people simply show up, sit around your house, eat something uncomplicated, laugh, talk, and make an ordinary day better because they were part of it.
God did not design us to move through life completely alone. We need people who celebrate with us, listen when things are difficult, tell us when we are being ridiculous, and keep coming back anyway.
So I’ll finish this little bit of work, close the monitors, and head downstairs.
The rest of Labor Day belongs to friends, air conditioning, and whatever we decide to order for dinner.
Thanks for spending a little part of your day with me.
