Discussing the 1977 radio signal that stunned scientists and gave rise to theories ranging from comets to aliens: the Wow! Signal.

In 1977, an astronomer noted a reading on a radio telescope unlike any he had ever seen before. He was so amazed by the 72 second signal that he circled the anomaly in red ink, writing “Wow!”. For decades, astronomers and researchers have tried to replicate or explain the strange reading. Was this a celestial oddity or a sign from extraterrestrial life? Today, we’re analyzing the Wow! Signal.

Now that I finished this episode, I'm officially CAUGHT UP on all mystery episodes! Now on to Field Work, then Break Room! It only took 6 months from first episode haha! You guys are awesome, thanks for everything you do!

This is really fascinating, as someone who studied broadcast engineering, as there actually is a frequency reserved for studying these types of signals.

This one was so fun to listen to after watching project Hail Mary this weekend

Chrismayn

i could of swore we had come to conclusion that it was a star exploding

Ambrose Stargazer

On this topic there's a game signal simulator thats a little goofy but mostly covers sounds from space

Amelia Rose

At this point I just need a podcast of Trevor and Neil deGrasse Tyson talking space

Interesting! I didn't see much on that. While an exploding star can certainly send out a strong hydrogen emission, it likely wouldn't be a hydrogen line-specific burst like this one. Curious if you know more on this!

Red Web

Eyy! Buff mind over here! So cool

19:18 haha 6-7, am I right? 🤣😂 how the fuck is there only a 6 & a 7 circled on this radio sheet from almost 50 years ago?
