An astronomer came across a strong 72 second narrowband radio signal that has been thus referred to as the Wow! signal after he circled it red ink and wrote "Wow!". The reading has been researched for decades to understand if it could be just an anomaly or... extraterrestrial life!

See you Monday!

I remember someone talking about it, but I forgot where 😅

If it was a natural source causing the signal, it should happen all the time. There are plenty of comets, gas clouds and gravity lenses. It has probably a human source.

Although we are sending out radio and other signals, these are not designed for contacting other planets. They do not reach that far. As our technology advance, we use less radio and more fibre cable. There is a window of a hundred years when earth was load and now it getting quiet again.

Very possible! Though some of the natural phenomenon are extraordinarily rare, such as the magnetar flare energizing a hydrogen cloud, which we just happen to be in line-of-sight AND measuring at the same time. We don't really listen in all directions at all times, so it's likely we've missed a plethora of interesting signals!

The issue with the WOW signal is that it did not repeat. We only have one source of information and with only that, you can't make a real scientific conclusion. With the kind of telescopes and surveys we have today, we should have seen an similar phenomenon. We didn't. Or maybe it is better to say we never made the link to the WOW signal. It is possible that we have measured similar signals, but with more telescopes and better technology, we could identify the source. We are talking about scientists that reviewed a printout of the day before. Today a computer would register the signal when it happens and immediately send out alarms. Other telescopes would be notified and start looking at that direction. This is how we hunt for supernovas for example. I think we will never know the truth as we don't us that kind of technology anymore. If it was aliens, we are now better equipped than 50 years ago. They can better try again.
