Hi, it’s Natsume Benkei!
[Summer Vacation Special] Part 7 of the 10-Part Series of Early Works!
Title: Getting Off With Tonight!
Release Date: November 2016
Since I was working on this piece at the same time as my sixth work, I was able to release it just two months after the previous one.
I had originally planned to release it as a black-and-white work, but when I looked at the finished product, I felt the quality was a bit off.
In the end, I decided to recolor the entire thing and release it in color.
I used a long vacation to draw this piece all at once.
At the time, this was still my seventh work.
I never got stuck on the storyboards; I just drew whatever I wanted with sheer momentum.
Since I was short on time, for better or worse, I didn’t overthink things.
I think it was precisely that momentum that allowed me to finish it in such a short period.
I’d wake up and draw manga; when I got sleepy, I’d fall asleep right where I was without even going to bed.
Then, when I woke up, I’d draw manga again.
Occasionally, I’d lose it, yelling, “I can’t take this anymore!” to vent my frustration, and then get back to work.
That’s the kind of life I was living back then.
At the time, I had virtually no production pace or schedule—absolutely no sense of planning whatsoever.
I have the impression that I was drawing purely on sheer determination and grit.
For me, creating doujinshi was like a temporary job I’d take on during a long break.
On a daily basis, I continued working at a design firm and studying design.
Perhaps because I was so busy, my memories of this period are quite vague.
On top of that, there were just so many drinking parties.
It was standard to go on to second and third rounds of drinking, and it was a time when my money was disappearing rapidly.
Still, I managed to avoid running out of money thanks to this work and my previous one selling reasonably well, and because people continued to buy my older works.
I should probably talk more about the work itself, but for better or worse, it followed a standard formula, so I don’t have any particularly vivid memories of it.
Partly because I was so busy, my memories of the production process are also quite hazy.
Rather than talking about the creation of the work, I end up talking mostly about my life back then.
Writing this out now, I realize my days were pretty chaotic.
This work was a product of that era when I was just charging ahead on sheer momentum!
Thank you as always for your support!
See you next time!
