The "Eminence in Shadow" that Cid is trying to be is not an existing character or figure, but rather an archetype or power fantasy that he wants to fulfill. An "Eminence in Shadow" is a type of character that appears normal to the public (hence Cid's obsession with being a background character in public), but does things in the shadows solely for looking and feeling cool. He's a chuuni or "Chuunibyou." They don't mention it in the anime, but the Seven Shadows are the original seven members of Shadow Garden that Shadow rescued personally. To rescue them, he shared his power with them (that purple glow), and as a result, they are much stronger than the regular members of Shadow Garden. The reason they think that purple glow is so much of a reward is because they are being bathed in a small portion of his magical power. Also, I'm sure everyone in previous episodes' comments has already said something about this, but Cid thinks all of the Shadow Garden girls are simply living their own lives and only occasionally do things to help Cid with his "game." For example, as you guys already figured out, Cid thinks Gamma created that mall to make money for herself, but she was doing it to fund Shadow Garden. Cid thinks he has to steal the money because he thinks it isn't his, but the girls would 100% give him all the money if he actually asked for it because they made that money for him.

So Cid's friends are actually named Po Tato and Skel Etal. You've only heard their first names so far. The names of some of the other characters are so dumb that they make me laugh unexpectedly.

TKOhhh

Booooo spoilers!! That is funny tho

Ryne

Yeah, sorry I should have given a warning since it can count as a spoiler. Though I guess Po's last name did come up in this episode. Just not at the point where I left the comment. From what I understand, in the original Japanese there are a lot of puns when it comes to names that don't translate over with even Cid's name being a pun of sorts.

TKOhhh

That mall scene is probably the funniest scene of the show for me so far - Taylor. Absolutely RIDICULOUS how he walks in and they're all bowing for him. Just perfectly extra.

Robin Berglund

Um... Code Geass is up there among the greats, occasional sillyness or not. I would personally rate it way above Eminence at the moment at least, although that might be a bit unfair as Eminence isn't finished and has so little source material.

ShaquanVirse

what's funny is they would have given him money if he asked lol he didn't need to take the coin sneakily. Cid is so clueless to think they won't give him what he wants

Michelle Hollamon

I SO needed this today! I appreciate you both so much!

Wally

Hidive has a preferred language setting that it will default to when available.

Reply Additions: firstly Skel's full name is Skel Etal... so... yeah... also addtionally... (below is about additional streaming options) I know that it's probably not relevant, as you're both likely later into the anime by now, however, this is also on Hulu, which in my experience is better at remembering the language choice when you're doing binges. So, something to consider whenever you're doing your next EIS session. (If you have ad-less Hulu, like me, might be better than HIDIVE... MIGHT being the operative term there.) The main drawback of Hulu which, unlike HIDIVE, has two of each episode, one in DUB and one in SUB. So you can't rewind a couple seconds or minutes to hear a scene in English vs Japanese like you can with HIDIVE.

Yes. As he explained, Cid is living his fantasy based on the "lie" about the cult & heroes descendants which as you noticed in episode 2 is all actually true but Cid thinks he made it up. Thus, he believes the SG girls are all "playing along" with his charade, game, fantasy, or whatever else you want to call it. So it adds to the comedy because Cid is playing a character essentially but the girls are not, creating the misunderstanding between them believing he's an almighty being & him believing they're just friends who sometimes indulge his fantasy as actors. 😂

Po and Skel are just a couple of names that are basically jokes, like other names in future episodes. Him stealing the money is because, since he thinks they are just play-acting, he thinks it's Gamma's money, which is why he was freaking out about her making so much with his knowledge that she figured out. He thinks Shadow Garden is just a bunch of LARPing, without knowing he could just have all that money if he just asked.

HAIL LELOUCH VI BRITANNIA! sorry, it's a reflex.. Deadman Wonderland, Code-Geass and Overlord will always be in my top 3 anime. (solo leveling and Tokyo ghoul are tied for 4th...)

Shadowmist909

I know what you mean with the Code Geass comparisons. That show would have a dark main plot but light hearted school episodes as a breather. While this one is more like a grim world full of murderers and cultists that the MC is just treating light heartedly

I was a little sad to hear that Karlii isnt a fan of Lulu. One of my favorite series. I get what Taylor is talking about though, both series have the characters slim and tall.

For some reason I thought I would have to wait until Tuesday to see another episode. Although I don't hate this arc, it is my least favorite. That being said it has some of favorite characters: Gamma, Nu, and Sherry. All 3 crack me up for different reasons. The tiny bit of info of Gamma's backstory was really whittled down. ---- Cut Content After Gamma joined shadow garden, she did not adapt well. She was also getting bullied. Very unlike Cid, who is normally to self absorbed to notice anything, he spent time with her and comforted her. He spent a lot of time with her talking about things from his past world.

Thamor

Well we know what Karli's type is :D

TKOhhh

Was all of this in the manga/LN and just not in the anime?

Rellimtime82

How many times I have seen this show, I can not believe I missed the statue in the mall being Shadow and the girls! Beautiful catch

LN. I have not read the manga, but i have heard that it is quite different. The anime is based on the LN.

Winters

Same! what a catch!

There is a realization that a lot of viewers miss about this episode, and I think you've missed it too. around 16 minutes in when you're talking about Cid playing it off like he didn't need money. It's not that he played it off as he didn't need money, it's that he honestly didn't realize Gamma was implying the money was for him too. In the earlier episodes Alpha tells him they need to go separate ways. She intended that to mean we need to split up, go into the world and build our organization bigger to achieve our goals. He interpreted it as we're breaking off from his fantasy and growing up. In this episode His inner dialogue even says she used my knowledge to build all this and make a crapton of money. He then stops himself from being upset about it and says I should just be happy she built me this 'set' to play around in. He literally thinks they are working for themselves at this point and just occasionally coming around to play into his little games and fantasies. It's important to understand this because he does stuff in later episodes that won't make sense unless you realize he sees a distance between him and the ladies that is only in his head.

papagolfwhiskey

Po Tato and Skel Atel are their full names. and... What Vardic D said. He thinks the girls are living their own lives and just humouring him from time to time.

Shiffer

Perfectly explained, most people I watched reacting to this show miss this point completly

Cameron Ross

You guys are the only reactors I've seen that noticed that statue in the mall

Darian St Juste

Lelouch is the GOAT, easy on my guy 🤣
