This week on MSB, it's Victory Gundam episode 37. We talk a lot about life, death, fluids, and another anime you might have heard of before that came out around the same time as Victory.

Please listen to it!

  • I consulted multiple dictionaries for this piece. I used Jisho (JP-EN/EN-JP), Merriam-Webster (to confirm/flesh out the English definition), and these two, which I use through Monokakido's "Dictionaries" app:

“きれい.” ウィズダム和英辞典. 第3版. 岸野 英治 編. 発行者:株式会社 三省堂.
// The Wisdom Japanese-English Dictionary. Third Edition. Ed. Kishino Eiji. © Sanseido Co., Ltd. 2019.

    “きれい.” 三省堂国語辞典. 第七版. 編者:見坊豪紀・市川 孝・飛田良文・山崎 誠・飯間浩明・塩田雄大. 発行者:株式会社 三省堂.
// Sanseido Japanese Dictionary. Seventh Edition. Ed. Kenbou Hidetoshi, Ichikawa Kou, Hida Yoshifumi, Yamazaki Makoto, Iima Hiroaki, and ?? (I cannot confirm the reading for this editor's name - both the surname and given name kanji have multiple readings 💀). © Sanseido Co., Ltd. 2014.

Hasegawa, Yoko. The Routledge Course in Japanese Translation. Taylor and Francis, 2013.

  • And here is Zeonic's overview of "Message to the Gundam Generation," and the translated interview with Dr. Moritsu Junko, hospice physician (it's fabulous - go read the whole thing!)

Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario.

You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. Regarding the Evangelion connection: Yes, that would be exclusive to the NTE films. I believe the only time they make it to the ocean in the TV series is during episode 8, and weirdly I recall no mention about a smell of any kind (especially as the ocean isn't corrupted by Second Impact in TV). That said, it's interesting to hear about Anno's lauding of V Gundam.
