Yes it really is about Harry. We know this because the two of them got in a snowmobile accident together and Harry had to get stitches in his chin. She sings about this accident again in Is it over now. Taylor said she wanted this song to feel like anxiety. Like things were ok but they knew things could be over any second. The live version of Out of the Wood from the 1989 tour is superior!

Also, many times if someone is in the hospital or their health took a turn for the worse, doctors might say “we’re not out of the woods yet”. Meaning things could still be bad. When the patient has gotten over the worst and is on the mend, they’ll say the patient “is in the clear”. So another possible interpretation 🙂

It literally refers to being lost in the forest and finally finding your way out - so like when you’re out of the woods you’re finally getting past the worst of your dangers or difficulties. So in the song she’s constantly begging her partner for assurance that they’ve finally found their way out of the woods together and hoping their relationship is in the clear of any more problems

Taylor’s version because it means she owns it.. her early albums everything before lover- was sold out from under her. She wasn’t given the chance to buy it. They would only allow her to have one of her old albums if she made a whole new album from the record label. Thus, began Taylor re recording her old albums so she could own them. She didn’t think people would support her as much as they have on this. So now she has 2 re records left- Reputation & Debut (Taylor’s first album)

Jack Antonoff produced this song but not the whole original album. The majority of 1989 was produced by Max Martin who is a go-to guy for pop bops. You can hear Jack doing background male vocals on “are we out of the woods?” This is the first album that Taylor and Jack started working together. I remember in the interview Jack said that he will forever be grateful she took a chance on the unknown producer at her level of stardom and for such an important album. It’s one of my favorites.
