For the longest time, I couldn't get into Speak Now. TTPD finally made me go back through Taylor's discography, and I was so angry with myself for not giving Speak Now a chance when it first came out. I believe my teenage self would love Rock Taylor. Safe to say, Speak Now is now in my top 3 of Taylor's discography. I loooove petty, vengeful Taylor. She really didn't filter herself out on this album. You should listen to Dear John. It's such a good song, and a great sample of what you can expect from All Too Well (when a man hurts her, Taylor really doesn't hold herself back, and with Dear John, it was 1000000% deserved).

A good reference to get the meaning of this song is the bridge, notice how it sounds like she is begging, “I just know you’re not gone, you can’t be gone no!! Come on come on don’t leave me like this! I thought I had you figured out! Something’s gone terribly wrong, No! Finish what you started!” She’s feeling haunted and abandoned by this relationship. You guys reference Hamilton sometimes, I think this is one of Taylor’s earliest theatrical songs. The live performance on the speak now tour is evidence to that as well

i don’t think it was ever confirmed by taylor but ALLEGEDLY this song was originally written to be on the twilight new moon soundtrack which is why it goes so hard and heavy! it’s following the vibe of like. paramore, muse, etc. other artists who very notably contributed to the twilight soundtracks. and if you look at the lyrics it really does sound like it mirrors the plot of the beginning of new moon!! not sure if this is totally true but ive always thought it made a lot of sense

The best part about this one is during Exile the crowd sings her parts and she is singing Bon Ivers but at one point the crowd does such a great job she stops singing her parts (and smiles so proudly) and lets the crowd continue on their own. Watching this made me realize how she’s singing about a person you just can’t figure out, and that’s represented in the music itself. The melody and where she goes is something you can’t figure out/predict. It doesn’t rhyme the same way her typical songs do, it’s rock and classical which you wouldn’t expect, you can’t anticipate where her range will be…the song is as unfigure-outable as the relationship. 🤯 this is one of the first times I’ve listened to Haunted and I’m not the whole way through their video so maybe they get to this point but I just got there lol

Rumor has it- emphasizing the word Rumor here, that this song was written for New Moon, because this was the same album as the timeframe for New Moon, released in 2009, and Speak Now the album released in 2010, and Taylor Swift was dating Lautner at the time. “He will try to take away my pain and he just might make me smile, but the whole time I’m wishing he was you instead” talking about Bella filling up her Edward time with Jacob time essentially.
