Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is Taylor writing about that same relationship at the same age John Mayer was when he dated her at 19 years old (in her early 30s) - reflecting on how genuinely disturbing it was for a grown man to have had a relationship with her when she was, essentially, just a child. A little bit of history since it looks like you are going to do Dear John and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. Both songs are about Taylor’s relationship with John Mayer when she was 19 and he was 32. JM complained about how much DJ hurt him, but they hit back and forth over the years musically eg JM’s Paper Doll is about Taylor. DJ was written right after the relationship ended and is from that perspective it is also written in the style of JMs music (cue guitar). WCS was written years later (it is on Midnights) and is from the perspective of looking back many years down the road. Additional context I found important is that John Mayer was said to have stained glass windows in his apartment at the time when they were dating.

Dear John X Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve is winning so I believe we’re on for a little background story here. Dear John was written by Taylor for her 3rd album Speak Now and it’s a track 5. Track 5s are usually the most hearth aching songs on the album, these are the songs that really hit hard emotionally, and that Taylor chooses because they have a deep meaning to her. Dear John was written about John Mayer, because she dated him back in the day. When they were dating she was 19 and he was 32, so there’s over a 10 year age gap there. So in this song she chastises him for breaking her heart when she was so young to have to experience such pain. Then on her 10th album Midnights (3AM edition) we got Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, another song linked directly back to Dear John and that whole story. In this song she talks about how she regrets ever having been with him and how she wishes things had been different. You will also notice that she only says the word “should’ve” in the chorus, because that’s also linked to Dear John. All the “should’ves” were sang in Dear John already so in the second song, she only sings it in the chorus, cause she already said what should’ve been done before.

I think you guys should listen to back to December. One of the things Taylor always gets a lot of hate for is so called “playing the victim” but that song is one of the first songs where she admits that she’s the one who messed up not the guy she was with. People don’t pay attention to the fact that she doesn’t claim to be perfect she goes through stuff and makes mistakes like all of us do and she is not afraid to admit it. No one praises her for that they just find the “bad” in what she does and hates on her. Which is one of the things that brought on reputation. And for reference back to December is about Taylor lautner. She broke up with him after he came to her show on her birthday and brought her flowers and everything, she said it wasn’t the time for them and she was focused on her career at the moment because she was knew and just started getting big but he was with her and there on stage with her when Kanye interrupted her after winning the VMA over Beyoncé.
