SherryS

Erin

So excited!

Meg

Yall will LOVE the speak now album it’s so cinematic

Jules

Stayed up for this! 😁

Clarissa

Omg 1h vídeo, YEEEES

Sarah Messana

“What did she do?” “Not that.” 🤣🤣

Brooke Ward

Just started watching but hoping you saw pictures of where he lived at the time they dated (in a converted church with stained glass windows!)

V

I was JUST about to go to bed but then you listed this…here I am about to press play!

Tonya

She ate him up!!! 🤣

Nic

Since this is Taylor's Version, it was actually recorded on the last couple of years. She's just so versatile and able to change her voice to match the vibe. 💜

Rachel

also, she never says “should’ve” in would’ve could’ve should’ve besides when she says the title because she said it in dear john

Mandy 🩶

The wildest thing about DJ is that she wrote this when she was 19!!!

Caro Bea

He did am interview saying DJ was "cheap songwriting" which is hilarious bc she wrote it in his style 🤣

court

i’m living my best life rn

Jessica

A Dear John is also another name for a break up letter that's also why he couldn't sue her

court

10 minutes in and this is everything

court

felt like hearing the chorus for the first time again 😩😩

Haley

Side note that y'alls vocals were EATING

TrishMarie🤟🏼

You Should Be! You Shoulda Known! Welcome to the club, K!!!!

Katie🫶🩷

It’s even better when you know the meaning behind a “dear John letter”👏🏼 It’s why the song title is so genius. “A Dear John letter is a letter written to a man by his wife or romantic partner to inform him that their relationship is over,” His real name just happens to be John too😅👌🏼

V

The album itself is older but the Taylor’s Versions are her recent re-records so it’s more of her current voice. You should listen to a snippet of the original and you can really tell the difference

Clari Antonieta

Currently sitting in my work car whilst raining outside lol what a way to spend my break 😌

Kirsten (Ready For It Podcast)

I love that you said she sounds younger… because it’s the “Taylors version” she actually recorded this more recently, but she’s controlled and manipulated her vocal to match what she sounded like on the original recording! Making it even more brilliant in my opinion lol xx

TrishMarie🤟🏼

I love John but don’t do this to my girl Taylor 😂

Trishgal

Munch much mf! 🤣🤣🤣 we need this on shirts asap!

Christina from CO

Im 18 mins in and i REALLY hope this is so long bc you also watch the live version bc if not you are missing 50% of the emotion of Dear John!

Erin

Omg at 15 minutes... Your singing is so beautiful I got goosebumps.

court

GUYS IM FREAKING OUT OVER THIS BRIDGE REACTION

court

ONE OF HER BEST BRIDGES PERIOOOOD

Dustincognito.O

Love that you guys have started listening to them all the way through after the initial reaction

Amy

Not Terry mentioning the battery halfway through 😭😂

Tara

Watching you two discovering her music, is making me fall in love with Taylor all over again :)

Meg

I love how almost every taylor song Kaniyia says it’s her favorite 💕

Jules

Yes! Love the LONG video. Your reactions are priceless. Thank you for sharing.

Brooke Conley

Y’all have to react to the live performance of dear John from the speak now tour next.

TrishMarie🤟🏼

AND! Paper Doll isn’t a terrible response. I wouldn’t hate hearing you listen to this!!!

Jamie

I’m not really a John Mayer fan to begin with. But read Jessica Simpson’s book and you’ll see he treated her the same. Disgusting.

T

one of my fav taylor quotes from when she was younger: if men don’t want mean songs written about them then they shouldn’t do bad things 😌

Christina from CO

Listen for the first time... then watch a live version or the music video... that way you get the full experience of the song. You guys did this with Tolerate it too... you still need to watch the live version from the Eras Tour.

Amanda P

Damn Kaniyia with the tolerate it reference!!! Officially in the Swiftie lore connecting the dots across her whole discography 👏🏼👑

T

the manuscript is the last song in this journey- about her writing her experience and letting it into the world. by doing that, the story is all of ours to take from it what we need and she’s free to heal from it

Kate

Please watch the speak now world tour version of this song!! When she was closer to the age when it happened. The feelings are so raw and the theatrics of that staging are amazing. Like fireworks 💥 over your sad empty town!!!

Vernalee Childress

It’s 1 am and I have to get up at 4 am but here I am excited.

Kalene Zepeda

I haven’t even pressed play yet BUT IM SO EXCITED 😭

Kristen

Told myself I would wait until tomorrow to watch but I failed😅 so good!!

Claire

NOT the battery comment only 21 mins in 🤣🤣😭 TERRY

Amanda P

Can you believe she wrote Dear John when she was 19???! AND a “Dear John” letter is a letter to a loved one so he had no basis for that lawsuit 😂 so CLEVER!!!

Mandy Clark

Looooove this so much!!!

Jules

Yes!! All of it together! Love it!

Malorla

One of the things that gets missed with Dear John is that a 'Dear John' letter is what they call it when a girlfriend would write to their military boyfriend to break up with them. In the beginning she says, "I stopped picking up, and this song is to let you know why." It starts the way someone might have started a Dear John letter.

Devin Elliott

The “promising grown man” is likely a reference to the phrase “a promising young man” which is sometimes used to justify easier punishments for men who commit sexual crimes because “they have their whole future ahead of them”. In this case the crime was committed by a much older, grown, man than she was at the time

Meg

“If I was some paint did it splatter like a promising grown man?” alludes to how men’s misdeeds often get painted in this light of how ~one mistake shouldn’t ruin the rest of his life~ which disregards the lives of the promising young women that have been hurt by these men

Aaliyah Palmer

The girlhood line breaks my heart every single time as someone with so much childhood and early adulthood trauma it’s unimaginably relatable. Years on and I cry at that line every single listen.

Sarah Messana

You’re allowed to say that word! 🤣

Eek

Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is Dear John but grown up and actually realizing what happened to her

Shannon

Dear John live performance from Speak Now tour PLEASE! you need to see her perform it live!!!!

Devin Elliott

This whole song is about a loss of innocence, but framed with a lot of references to a loss of faith/religion too, which for us religious trauma girlies who also have relationship/sexual trauma is just a double gut punch 😭

Summer

Omg yall are at the swiftie stage where lyrics remind you of other songs I love it - dear John bridge x tolerate it

Kayleigh Hecht

I’ve been waiting for this one 😭💓

Erin Delgehausen

I know you said you love him KANIYIA, but I promise you’ll never think of him the same again, and it was his pattern for YEARS. I think it was Jessica Simpson who wrote about the emotional abuse she endured with him.

court

they getting all the tea rn i’m living for this

ECoff

The is a great way to listen to some of her songs that are related! The majority we can only guess what/who they are about and those are fun to listen to on their own and find out later what they may be about. But there are some that are indisputably tied to the same storyline (love triangle for example) that are best to listen to all together just like this if you are not deep into Swiftie lore! Looking forward to more

Susan Hines

I knew I saw a preview of that reaction a while ago! It was like in your story on Tik Tok. I thought I was tripping!!!

Courtney Forbes

She only says “Should’ve” in Dear John. Epic song writing.

Dana Michelle

Ya gotta know the lore for each song because it hits different!!

BrittanyL

A whole hour of y’all?? I’m so excited! Your reactions are the best 🥰

espy (Taylor's Version)

She wrote would've could've should've when she was 32, looking back "And know that I know"

Danielle G

Yessss so glad you listened to these together. Thank you for feeding us a 52 minute video- loved every second. When yall turn to each other and make the other one explain but then they don’t know, I die laughing every time 🤣 amazing video!

Ashley Huff

I just watched it all! So gooodd

Mandy 🩶

To me, promising grown man is her basically repurposing the typical “promising young man” phrase that’s used when teenage boys/young adult men get in trouble for doing things they know better than doing in the first place.

Kadie💟

Y'all are spot on! love watching from a diffrent perspective 💟

✨•Chelsea•✨

I need EVERYONE to like this comment so they see it. I know we all have favs we want them to listen to BUT… WHILE THEY ARE IN THIS BAG- ALL TOO WELL (10 min) has to be next. It just has too.

Kadie💟

Also, TERRY YOU HAVE VOCALS💯

Meg

“Years of tearing down our banners” is a reference to the fantastical elements that show up in the Speak Now album like castles and dragons and fairytales

ACR

💔

Eek

I wouldn’t say Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is about release it’s more the anger of realizing the extent of her trauma. She was a basically a child and he was a grown man who groomed her and stole her innocence. She’s pissed off that a grown man did that and he SHOULD HAVE known better. She’s not reminding herself that she regrets him- she carries that shit deep in her chest so she doesn’t need reminding. This is her saying the “tomb won’t close” and the “wound won’t close” until she comes to terms with and heals from the trauma of it all :/

SarA

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the song to me is how it ends without any closure… the last line is “I regret you all the time” so it feels like she’s still stuck there with no hope or “solution”

Rachel

Omg just finished y’all watching it and deff the “give me back my girlhood it was mine first” hits hard so much…. For a lot of us!

JoAnn Burrage

The pain was heaven because all he did was cause her pain and then would come back and everything would be better. It was a cycle of abuse!! Also when she says stained glass windows in my mind, John Mayer lived in an old converted church building with stained glass windows. Taylor wrote WCS after she saw John Mayer perform at the 2021 Grammys and it brought back all the rage.

Courtney Forbes

She wrote WCS when she was 32-the same age JM was when they were together- and it is the 19th track-the age she was when they were together-on Midnights 🤯 Mastermind!

Susan Hines

Would’ve, Could’ve, should’ve only had the words “would’ve” and “could’ve”…because the “should’ve” was all in Dear John. Also she was young when speak now came out, she was 19. But “Taylor’s version” is the re-recording. It’s weird how her voice can still song so young in some songs. 💜💜💜

Summer

I will never ever forget getting would’ve could’ve should’ve as one of my acoustic set surprise songs in Nashville. In the past she hadn’t performed dear John because it was too emotional so I never thought we’d get it and then we did and the moment we all realized what it was the stadium collectively lost their minds😭❤️

giana

y’all are ready for all too well.

Erin Delgehausen

I can’t wait for you to get through her music the first time so we can then fill in the timeline of what was going on in her life as she was writing the different albums. if you listen to her library in chronological order, you will recognize how she calls back to old songs in new albums. There’s so many more layers 😱😍

rach

nahh Kaniyia was ON POINTTTT THIS WHOLE VIDEO

Corinne E Colgrove

Another part of this in dear John is that he should’ve known bc she was a fan! And he was talking about her publicly as how she’s so talented and he just wanted to get together to make music and that’s how the relationship starts. Imo, she was groomed.

TrishMarie🤟🏼

K - your STANK FACE! 😂 When the tomb won’t close. THAT! That is what I want to Gif.

SarA

Also the “give me back my girlhood, it was mine first” is exactly what a child would say or sound like when you took something from them “it was mine first!”

Hannah Hansen

i just absolutely love the line "give me back my girlhood, it was mine first"!!!

Chelsea Diamond

ALL TOO WELL 10 min version if you want to know who took her virginity!! In WCS it’s talking more about her innocence!

Jo

I love your reactions so much. This one was so good. You picked up on SO MUCH. It's so impressive to watch. I also love the idea of reacting to the full song again after the initial reaction.

Rachel

You’ll have to watch and listen to the All Too Well 10 Min Version Video. Your ready…

rach

Taylor's range is hella underrated. People don't understand how high she can sing as well as how low!!!

Cali Allan

OF COURSE WE WATCHED IT ALL!! 🩷🩷🩷

T

also she was 32 when she wrote WCS (same age john was when they dated) i’ve always viewed her “now that i know i wish you’d left me wondering” as her being like “damn now that im that age i can’t imagine even more why he thought it was okay to pursue a 19 year old”

Erin Delgehausen

She’s MAD and the impact on thousands of young woman who hear this song and know that they are not alone in being SHATTERED by an older man that PREYED on them is unmeasurable 🩷🩷🩷 Y’all got me fired up again hearing it twice 😂😂

Caitlincirre

Now you have to finish this with All Too Well to get the trifecta!!

Laura

Loved it so much!!!! Glad the context helped. ❤️👍🏻

Jules

This was BRILLIANT!! Love you guys!!

Lisa Malcolm

This was beautiful. And not too long! I love how thoughtful you both are.

Kristen

Thank you!!

ImpossibleGalPerls

Y’all are way faster at picking up meanings than I am 😂 I hope yall do reacts to music videos/live performances!! Dear John from the SN tour is on YouTube and is so good

Corinne E Colgrove

“Promising grown man” is a play on ‘promising young woman’. It’s also a reference that older men take advantage of younger women and it doesn’t hurt their reputation but it hurts the victim aka the person being taken advantage of

Caro Bea

I think they're ready for Gyllenhal lore

amanda r.

yall were so close to connecting the songs!! dear john IS the “should’ve” verse. thank you for the long video, we appreciate y’all’s hard work 🫶🏼

Crystal

“Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts” so basically admitting she wrote Dear John as revenge.

Samantha

K- you’re right about her not saying should’ve!! It’s because in Dear John she says “I/you should’ve known” ❤️ you’re a natural Swiftie.

Tara

Thanks!!

Mary Spradling

PLEASE keep the same poll just mark off this one! That was a perfect list

Sara

Love watching your reactions! And Kaniyia, would've, could've is in the verse and not "should've" because is in Dear John "you should've known" My take on it anyway.

TrishMarie🤟🏼

You needed to go back 10 more seconds to rehash this REALLY important line: Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first! 🎵 The only thing you missed on repeat!

Andrea

Loved this so much! It's almost like I get to experience these songs for the first time all over again. 💜💙

Michelle Lutz

Worth the missed sleep!! Is “munch munch mf” on merch yet? 🤪

Dawn

She never has a Should've in Would've, Could've, Should've because all of them were in Dear John. She Should've known 🥺🥺

Aly J

I love that you GET IT NOW!! 😭😭😭🫶🏽💖 other non-Swifties listening to it and not knowing the back story and thinking the song is just whatever is baffling omg.

Katie H

So although we don’t listen to songs that aren’t Taylor’s version but this song shows her growth as a singer. The OG version, she was so young and you could hear the raw pain. When Taylor’s version came out, i was so excited to hear this song and her voice is just so much more mature and beautiful. Instead of the raw pain, it’s the “been through shit” Taylor. Beautiful.

Vanessa McComb

Okay All Too Well 10 Min Version TV and So Long, London definitely need to be next!!!!

Malorla

I haven't seen anyone say it, but she wrote Would've, Should've, Could've at 32. The same age as John was when it all went down. She's able to see in full clarity how wrong it was of him to do what he did to a 19 year old, because she's the same age.

Julie

I think what I love most about your videos is that it helps me see and hear the details in her music.

Erin

I went from tearing up at the key change at the end of the song to laughing out loud at the Tommy Pickles shout-out

Violeta

Kaniyia reads books and it shows! 💜☺️📚📚📚 I love to see when everything starts clicking. These reactions are everything!

Sadie

This was amazing to watch! I love all of y’all’s commentary. That bridge where she says “give me back my girlhood it was mine first” is incredibly power. So many women can relate to that one line. The loss of your innocence in such a bad way stick with you. This song helped heal my inner teen girl. The therapy of belting out the lyrics releases something like Kaniyia said. That’s what I love about Tay’s music. A lot of us grew up with listening to her so every era of her life we find something to relate to. As she heals, loves, finds joy, administers petty revenge with her words & rages, we are able to do the same. I think that’s what many women love about her. She’s relatable regardless of her fame & fortune. It’s a connectivity we cherish because we know we’re not alone in our struggles & triumphs. Anyway, I enjoyed this tremendously!! I know y’all just posted but I can’t wait for me! 😂

Whitney

You will learn that Petty Taylor is the best Taylor 🔥 speaking of yall need to react to “Mad Woman” from Folklore 🩷🫶 Thank you for doing these songs! I have been so excited to see your reactions. Also “Taylor’s Versions” are re-recorded albums. So technically Dear John is from an older album but Speak Now Taylor’s Verison is more recent (7/23) so it’s her more mature voice but she does a great job keeping it similar to the original.

Mariah Kemp

For the beginning part it's about his reputation and pride. If he tasted poison you could've, spit me out at the first chance, so post-relationship he claims he knew the relationship was bad the whole time, so why didn't you spit me out earlier and saved me the trauma? If she was some paint did it splatter on a "Promising young man" is more with his pride, people and media scrutinized their relationship and it tarred his reputation (so TS is paint splattering on his reputation), and he blamed her for it.

🪩🐍Sha’ya🐍🪩

Thank you, so good!! I learned something in the chat tonight that you caught onto. She leaves that should’ve out of the verse and only says it on the should’ve could’ve would’ve pre-chorus and the theory behind that is because she says should’ve over and over in Dear John, so she purposely left it out of that verse.

Allie

Love you guys and this video!! ❤️

Meg

I love watching reactions when you have a little bit of the lore/backstory of growing up swiftie. This was one of my favorite videos of yours yet!!

Dwanna Packard

I watched it all and I loooooved it! Your reactions are the best!! ♥️♥️

🏔️Kim Ramsey🏔️

“A promising grown man” Cause he was a grown ass man with a 19 year old and so often people say things like “oh don’t ruin his reputation he has a whole promising life ahead of him” when women have the ‘audacity’ to call men out on their bullshit and he was already a grown man and should have known better ….. lol this song gets me fired up 😎😎

Jocelyn Howe

Praying for the day they do ATW 10 minutes

Shannon

WCS is track 19 on midnights and she was 32 when she wrote it! Same age John was when she dated him. The PERSPECTIVE.

Jodi

Doing a poll, getting background info on the song and then reacting is top tier yall!!

Jen Frick

Another amazing petty tie in with Would’ve could’ve should’ve is that she released that song when she was 32 and it’s Track 19 (John was 32 she was 19)

Sacha Reilly

It's 06.39 here is Scotland and i should be getting ready for work....but no, am watching this first

Trishgal

This is such a great reaction video yall!!!! Ya just made my day with this one!! You have sooo much more Taylor to explore and I am here for it!! 💜💜

Steph C

First time I’ve heard people discuss the similarities of music styles. Ultimate petty and I’m here for it

Rhiannon May

Absolutely obsessed with y’all!

Allie

She never said “should’ve” in would’ve could’ve should’ve because she says it in Dear John over and over again 😭

Jenni Lynn

The change to the girl in the dress wrote you a song you should’ve known 💀💀💀

Collyn

I saw one theory that there’s no should’ves because they were already in dear John “I should’ve known/you should’ve known”

Allie

You better bet I watched the full video 😂

Lisa (Personalized By LD)

Excellent video!!! You guys are awesome!!! My take on the stained glass windows, the wound won’t close, the tomb etc are all religious references, like church, Christ wounds, the tomb etcetera. Lots of references to staying pure and following the righteous path only to be diverted by the devil essentially. Also I a swear I am agnostic not religious at all, but the symbolism is just too strong to not reflect. The pairing of these two songs Is like a journey into some deep pain. Anyways, thank you as always!!

CourtNicole

So worth the wait!! Give my back my girlhood is also just he preyed on a young girl and it made her grow up. He groomed her and took parts of her innocent.

CourtNicole

Also. Listen to better man

cindy

So proud of K for noticing that “should’ve” isn’t in any of the verses!!! They’re all in DJ!! True swiftie

Jenni Lynn

I regret you all the time is so superior

Corinne E Colgrove

Sorry for continuing to comment but also WCS was written when she was the same age as John (32) so she now fully understands how ridiculous that was. Also give me back my girlhood!! It was mine first!!!

Kate

Beginning of WCS: K & T “I get it! I get it” pause…. K: “what did she say?” …T: “what do you mean?” Burst into laughter 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Claire

Also you need to make sure you listen to The Moment I Knew before All Too Well!!!

Page

Love the longer video. Y’all make me smile. Thanks for being such a bright spot on the internet.

Heather M

That was amazing!! So worth the wait!

Jaycee

MY INTERNET WENT OUT TO I HAD TO WAIT AN HOUR TO WATCH BUT IM HERE BISHESSSSSSS

Bailee🪩💎🦍🦈

The almost hour long video… all I can say is MMMF I love the long videos and we love giving you context!!! What kills me the most is in dear John Taylor is obviously heartbroken and she realizes the relationship was wrong and manipulative, but when she wrote/released would’ve could’ve should’ve she was around 32 and I think she finally fathomed how f*cked up it was and was angry for her younger self now that she was finally the age he was when they dated. Especially when you consider how at the time they dated and broke up he was a much bigger and well respected artist than she was, so the bravery it took to not only release the song but call him out by name is insane.

Gretta Martin

So good! Now do London boy & so long, London together. You know what? Just do every Taylor song, I think that’s what we all want 🫶 I’d love for you guys to listen to her debut album, it’s so special & it shows how much of a genius she truly is because she wrote that whole album at like 14/15 years old & before.

Susan Hines

John Mayer is such a jerk I can’t separate him from the music. He was an asshole to many of the women he dated. He isn’t worth my time or money.

Lauren Watson

This was great!! I really like you connecting the songs. My next request is a quick relisten of Youre Losing Me then So Long London!!

CaliRN

Ugh this was amazing 🤩 Thank y’all for doing this long ass video. I know it’s a a lot of work, but hey, the crowd is chanting “MORE!” I’ll probably rewatch this a few times. I can’t wait for the next video- yes already. Don’t forget most of us binged the entire two albums in one night 😂😭❤️

Eloserbeth

This was totally worth staying up late for!!!!😂🫶 Also the ghosts theme in WCS is a bit of a call back lyrically to Haunted as well, which makes sense since it was also on Speak Now with Dear John.

kaitlyn

Saw this explanation once and related to: a stained glass window is ironic because it’s a window, but you can’t really see out of it because the colors and pictures distort the outside world. The stained glass window in her mind distorts the outside world with visions of the past. It’s an incredible metaphor for PTSD, trauma, grief- anything that permanently distorts the present with the past.

GINA R

Ask me why I’m screaming!!! Such a beautiful heart wrenching song 🎶

Jaycee

Taylor’s version was recorded in 2023, so no, this is not old Taylor lol

Susan Hines

His apartment was an old church made into an apartment building. There was stained glass windows in his apartment.

Heather Creel

The original you can hear the hurt and anger in her voice. She loses a lot of that in the rerecord because of the time that has passed since the original. A lot of this TV lost some of the emotions for me.

Yasmin Fernandes

i love this song and this album is so good, yall should react to the rest of it for sure.

Jenny Hubbard

Love y’all! Thanks for the long reaction video! 💜 💙

Kristen

she never says “should’ve” in the verse of WCS and she only says “should’ve” in dear john 🫶 alsooooo: - john mayer lived in a remodeled church while they were dating - WCS is track 19 (her age when they dated) on Midnights - she was 32 (his age when they dated) when she wrote it. if there’s one thing about swifties, we’ll watch every video of people appreciating taylor and morphing into swifties themselves. so excited for more videos!

Lindsay Browning

NEXT: ALL OF THE GIRLS YOU LOVED BEFORE💖💖💖💖💖💖

Susan Hines

I don’t know if anyone said this yet. But Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve was written the night of the Grammys in 2021. Taylor was there and performed. But John Mayer performed as well the same night. She went home and her and Aaron Dessner wrote this song, Hits different, and High Infidelity. She made is track 19 on Midnights on purpose. She circles back in his at the age he was when he dated her. 32. That Bridge shook everyone when 3am edition was released.

Courtney Wagner

I love the duo listen… she has so many Easter eggs throughout her discography.. it’s so freaking FUN to listen to her. It’s genius.

Emaleah

Loved every minute!! Totally worth staying up!

Mills Lane

Watched the whole thing, it was amazing! The verse “if I was some paint, did it splatter on a promising grown man?” is because he wasn’t a young man at that point — he was 32 — and she purposely substituted “grown” for “young.” That line goes directly with “and if I was a child, did it matter if you got to wash your hands?” She’s saying basically “did my young age reflect badly on you, a promising grown-ass man? Or did my age just not matter to you at the time because you thought you could wash your hands of me?” That’s how I interpreted it, but I miss nuances sometimes.

Melanie Kirgan

“I would have stayed on my knees, and never would’ve danced with the devil”… has a whole new meaning once you get the background.

Clare

You know shits getting real when Terry takes off his glasses. The best 50 mins of my day. Thank you!

Lynn B

She’s nothing but a lyrical genius, her song writing and story telling abilities are just simply 🤌, a Picasso for the ages ❤️

Becca Holmes

The craziest thing is that "Should" has been a punch she's thrown since the beginning with "Should've Said No" on her debut album all the way through to her latest album TTPD with "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" I love how "Should" has been a theme all the way through. Sometimes on herself, sometimes on others. She reflects on so much and then pours all her wonderings out into lyrics. That honesty and realness is why I have always listened to her since her Debut album. "Should've Said No" is still a song on my regular rotation

Susan Hines

I loved the long video!!!!

Lety Garcia

KANIYIA, you are so brilliant lol. It’s so fun watching you catch things in TS music so fast.

Coral

This is so fun to watch! I think any songs that are your first Taylor songs will always be far more interesting once you understand the how much thought she puts into them, the lore of what was going on in her life at the time, and the unmatched depths of her supreme petty. On Dear John, "dear John" is an historic phrase for a letter written to end a relationship. As letters to servicemen from wives or girlfriends back home would typically contain an affectionate greeting (such as "Dear Johnny", "My dearest John", or simply "Darling"), a serviceman receiving a note beginning with a curt "Dear John" when accustomed to a warmer greeting would instantly be aware of the letter's purpose. That gave her further cover to defend the choice. It's literally a known expression. The song was her dear john letter. Her perspective was that he was very concerned about image and anyone who saw his bad side was added to the long list of traitors, so she knew that attacking his character would hurt him the most. But also, when she talks about being warned and how he burned out the previous women, and that she's stolen his matches and is shining her fireworks over his sad dreary town, she's publicly telling all the future potential women who he is and what he does, by using the song to cast a light over his behaviour. Her live performance of this from the Speak Now tour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FQCpSg65jU&pp=ygUWZGVhciBqb2huIHRheWxvciBzd2lmdA%3D%3D Adds another level, as with many of these songs, she really shows the emotions in her performance.

Grace

Kaniyia you’re so right, she doesn’t say “should’ve” in the verses of WCS because “you should’ve known” is still the underlying message from Dear John bleeding into WCS

Nasj

And she mentions Clarity in WCS, which is one if John's first singles!!

Justine

We MUST acknowledge that a Dear John letter is a breakup letter. That is missed so often, but is so reflective of her maturity and ability to speak beyond her years

Coral

Would've could've should've, you got it. The common expression is a promising young man, which people often say when someone does something that may spoil their future, "He was such a promising young man". So she's saying she came along and by publicly speaking about him, she tarnished his reputation, although as a grown man, he ws the one at fault.

Lindsey Rinehart

Another vote for the Speak Now Tour Live version of Dear John. She is SO YOUNG and SO MAD and the VOCALS and the THEATRICS. Ya gotta watch. Kthnxbye.

Paula Mihai

So much trauma in this song :(

Jennifer Ess aka TikBlok 🩵

I definitely watched the whole video!!! Honestly, my favourite thing is to watch people slowly become Swifty,, some of her music needs a backstory per song, never mind this one where you had to bridge a gap and got all of the information to get the full meaning.

Nadia Mitchell

You have listened to dress, flash god, tolerate it, you're loosing me & loml and many more - these songs are the start of the story with Joe and the end... The alchemy and so high-school are the beginning of her relationship with Travis kelce - I also think albatross is too. All speculation of course! We can only guess haha But there are some great ones about Kim and Kanye- look what you made me do, this is why we can't have nice things & thanK you aIMee, cassandra...well worth the listen!!! There's so many stories to be told - I love new romantics and I can fix him I can and then down bad - matt healy story But then there's all of the fictional stories in folklore and evermore - the last American dynasty is excellent and you already know about the trio!!

Jennifer Ess aka TikBlok 🩵

I can’t wait for all too well!!! I know it’s probably a little ways out, but I am so looking forward to it ❤️

Carly J

Of course we watched it all! 🫶

Jaycee

I really want to see you guys react to now that we don’t talk!! It’s such a feel good song. I know it’s not getting requested a lot, but it’s a great song! I feel like you guys would love it. It’s really unique to the whole 1989 album! This song is literally in my top 3 out of her entire discography. Hope you guys see this. 💕

Valentine Truong

This took my whole way from home to work 😂 I love screaming-singing Dear John So much

Bree Drake

DAMN YALL REALLY LOVE US 😭😭😭😭😭

JP

Now go watch the original live performance of dear John

Dianna Doyle

John Mayer lived in a converted church with stained glass windows. Taylor and John collaborated on a song together and the music video is in that room with the windows. Taylor had a teenage crush on John. He seduced her and made her feel all grown up and important. Personally, I think she lost her virginity to him. She lost her girlhood and innocence.

natalee:)

my take on the “promising grown man” line is that it’s something commonly said about young guys. when a girl reports that he was being inappropriate or something, you’re kind of told to hush up if he’s a good student or athlete because “you can’t ruin the future of a promising young man!” so she’s saying that she knew he was famous. she knew he was a “good guy” so she felt like she couldn’t say much without being paint splattered on his reputation, rather than him being held accountable for his own actions. and instead of saying “promising young man” it’s “promising grown man” because he wasn’t young. he was promising, but he was grown.

Laura E

I wonder if the “pain was heaven” line is also referencing the “girlhood” piece - like the *act* she’s referring to was physically enjoyable at the time lol but in hindsight she realizes that it actually broke her and fed the cycle of pain and abuse because now that pivotal moment in her life is seared into her memory as related to him and the pain of him. On that note (of “searing” a memory into your mind), the fire/religious references and connection between the two songs gets me. In Dear John she says that all of his exes have “tired lifeless eyes” because he “burned them out” but in the next line she says that she took his matches and instead turned that fire into fireworks so that she can not only shine but OUTshine him, like she escaped the wounds of him and he didn’t “kill” her spirit … Then in WCS she calls him the devil (who is associated with fire and burning people), and she is basically saying that now that she’s grown she realizes that thinking she escaped his wounds was naive because he (the devil) DID burn her, because the rage fire of hurt in her head and heart is still burning and she can’t heal the wound that was seared into her memory. Also the “I’m scared of ghosts” and “memories are weapons” and “I fight with you in my sleep” like she’s haunted by this memory of him and she can’t subconsciously forget, and she’s praying and begging god to rid her of the memories of him and the emotional scars of what he did but almost also a forgiveness of her sins for that experience too :(

Shay

Day1 of petitioning for London Boy and So Long London in 1 video!!!!

Kim

Definitely watched the whole video. I vote you do the Folklore trio in the same style 🫶🏻

Lyzette Sotero

"Stained glass windows in my mind" because John Mayer used to live in an old church with stained glass windows that is repurposed to an apartment.

Kris Reyes

I fell asleep after i voted on the poll. LOL. Long day. Now i get to listen to you guys at midnight. Pressing play!

Megan Cline

tbh i think the girlhood line just references her innocence since she still considered herself a child/teenager and how he, an adult, should have known better

Noa

SO JOHN MAYER USED TO LIVE IN A CHURCH WITH STAINED GLASS WINDOWS THAT WAS REPURPOSED INTO AN APARTMENT BUILDING AND THATS WHY TAYLOR SAYS “stained glass windows in my mind, i regret you all the time” IN WOULD’VE COULD’VE SHOULD’VE

Kris Reyes

Terry! Not the phone lol

AE

A couple of things… The line “Promising grown man” is quite possibly a play on the phrase “promising young man” often used as a reason for a lesser sentence for sexual predators. Also JM famously lived in a converted church parish… with stained glass. His apartment likely served as a metaphor for losing innocence in the place where one is created innocent, the eyes of God. ✌🏻

Kris Reyes

I love hearing Dear John through you guys perspective as you are figuring things out! It’s cool to hear you guys reference other Taylor songs!

Shellbee

LOVE YOU. I enjoyed every minute of that.

Jo Gabuya

"memories feel like weapons" -- imagine being as big as Taylor now, having given her virginity to a man she doesn't trust. Memories are weapons because this man could go ahead and spill the beans on how it happened, maybe in a song or some sort of expose. That must make her feel so vulnerable.

Julia & Daisy

Your reactions and appreciation for the little details are such a dopamine boost

Lynn Cook

She didn’t say should’ve because she said should’ve over and over in Dear John!

Kris Reyes

It didn’t feel like an hour at all guys! Also I loved that you replayed the song and just listened to it the second time.

Théo

THIS WAS AMAZING YOU GUYS

Kaye Blendermann

You will enjoy All Too Well (10 minute version). Please do it… and before you do, please read about her and Jake Gyllenhaal!!!

Meghan Smith

I am so so so glad you guys started listening to the whole song through a second time. 💜 as Terry said, it was fun to just watch you vibe and really hear the whole story beginning to end. Hope that you start doing it for all the videos!! 💜💜

Alile

Watched the whole thing. I’d never heard either song before, and it was really cool getting to experience them like this. Like you, I’m glad I read the comments people made about the backstory, and that you listened to them together, because it would have been like a puzzle with pieces missing otherwise. Loved it. 😍

Talia Adams

Kaniyia picking up on her never saying should've in the versus!! It's because "You should've known" was in Dear John!!

Alyssa

Munch Munch MF’er is all that I will be saying moving forward. 😎

Clari Antonieta

This is the first time I hear these songs together back to back with you guys . You guys are great 🙌🙌🙌 here for this journey

Melissakay503

We will always watch the whole thing!! 👏👏👏 also I love the fact that you’re listening though a second time. If you ever don’t have backstory on a song and want it, you can always look at Genius and they usually are on point with all the songs meanings and what we interpret from them. Love y’all!

Alisha

To think how young she was when she wrote this too!! What a masterpiece!

Emily

Loving the longer videos!! Dear John is one of my favourite Taylor songs, absolutely beautiful and never gets enough credit! Glad you loved it!

Kris Reyes

You guys are like that addictive teenage drama series. Can’t wait for the next episode lol

Kris Reyes

Okay so I really miss dancing Terry and Kaniyia. Can we react to cruel summer and can I get some help from you all so when they wake up they see cruel summer everywhere in this chat lol. I’m sooo selfish lol. We are experiencing the California heat this week in So Cal and would love to hear one of my all time favorite summer song!

Kris Reyes

I can already see the “closet disappearing” Kaniyia when she hears the bridge!

Rick V

You are listening to Dear John (Taylor’s version), correct? Just checking. Ha

Jadey

You guys really spoilt us with this one! 😍🙌 thank you so much! You guys have such a lovely relationship, I know we only see a glimpse of it but it’s so nice to watch ✨ x

Hannah Banana

A “dear John letter” has been a thing for decades too. It used to be the name for the letters that soldiers would get from their girl back home, breaking up with him. It’s been a term for a break up letter since forever, so there’s another layer to it!

Christine Franks

You "full government named her" in your caption. You guys are officially swifties!!

Rick V

Terry and Kaniyia, I love you guys and can’t stop listening to your reactions. One small request. Please do whatever you can to not stop during Taylor’s iconic bridges. Sometimes when you’re trying to understand, you have to listen to the whole bridge to help comprehend the message. Otherwise, keep doing Miss Taylor and I’m a subscriber for a life. lol Keep up the great work.

Lynn

Isn’t The Manuscript the third song about JM? Help me Swifties, am I right?

Zo-Ann Robe

You guys really should watch her sing dear John live on the speak now tour!

Rick V

The original (stolen) version of the song she ended DJ w “I should’ve known”. But in her re-recorded Taylor’s version, she ended it with “You should’ve known”. Very poignant meaning behind that.

Robin Peacock

Omgggggggg I had never heard Dear John, and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve has been a favorite since Midnights was released. Y’all breaking it down and then listening to the whole song again is ✨perfect✨. This was a rollercoaster of emotions. Memories feel like weapons - not just against herself (her own memories hurting) but also being able to use those memories as a weapon against him. 🤯 Tearing down our banners, you and I - like how in battles in history the victor would tear down the flag or banner of the enemy to show they’ve been conquered. So they are hitting each other back and forth, trying to be the victor. Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts - that is just some perfect TayPetty and as a girl who was used at 19, it feels like a battle cry to know someone so well that you can hit that weak spot over and over and over again.

Robin Peacock

Omg I have so many thoughts y’all this video 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I love how you break down the music and really hear the layers and the harmony and the way she EATS

Amber

If you guys ever create merch please make a munch munch motherfucker shirt 🤣🤣

Robin Peacock

You are making me love and appreciate an artist that I already really liked 🫶

Agustina Tavelli

“if i was some paint did it splatter on a promising grown (young) man” refers to how when young men, fuck up specially when it comes to bad/disgusting situations with women people tend to not care so much about the woman, but more about the reputation of the “young men” and how the woman’s accusation or the situation is going to tarnish their image in the future. so that would be the paint splattering (the mark, the tarnishing) in this case, on the GROWN ASS man

Holly Hillhouse

Okay the stained glass windows are in the music video they made together for "Half of my Heart"!!!

Cameron Dignam

This is the BEST money I’ve ever spent!! You’re both so genuine it’s beautiful to watch. Thank you!!

Çiğdem

all too well 10 minute version

anyonebutsydney

INCREDIBLE THING TO WAKE UP TO IM SO HAPPY!!!! this video was so good i love the time and attention you put into this!!

Olivia

I def think you guys should watch “dear John” live performance from Speak Now tour. Not only is the performance AMAZING but you’ll actually get to listen to young Taylor sing, whereas the “dear John” you listened to here was the re-record in 2023. Just prepare for the SASS that young Taylor brings to this… it’s top tier 🤣💜🫶🏻

Crazycadence

“Promising grown man” is referring to the phrase “promising young man” meaning John Mayer has the potential to grow into a great man, but he’s already grown so he’s probably never going to change.

Daniel Roberts

Promising grown man- I took it as John was at his height of his career prior to and during his dating of Taylor… She splattered on that with DJ. And his career took a nose dive.

TheLittleCarrotThatCould

"Y'all might get an hour video out of this" 😂 Like there is any complaining about that

Fran

Me noticing a new video posted at almost 6 am thinking let me watch this real quick 😂 I’m gonna wait until I have my coffee and then settle in and watch 🙌🏽

Renny

Give me back my girl good it was! mine! FIRST!!!

Renny

she never has a verse for “should’ve" in WCS because she uses all her should’ves in Dear John…

TheLittleCarrotThatCould

I also love that you noticed she sounds younger. What struck me so much about Speak Now TV was that she genuinely sounds younger than she does on Midnights/1989 TV/TTPD. I want to add that a "Dear John" letter is a letter written to a man (often a soldier during WWII) to let him know that the relationship is over. So instead of addressing it "My Darling, etc. etc." the letter starts "Dear John, ..." I love that Taylor used this song to let him know why... it is literally a Dear John letter. She is so clever for this. Aahhhhh I love it so much!!

Heather Bradley

You should add The Manuscript as a trilogy and final chapter of this story

Elizabeth LeBlond

The fact that there's no "should've" line in WCS is something that took me so long when I first listened to it and now it's something I think about all the time.

Nicole Donnelly

This is perfect with breakfast and K is right about the petty in that first first - sexual assault victims are always talked about ruining the future and reputation “of a promising young man” over his mistakes (🤢) but she said promising GROWN MAN. Cause his ass was fully grown at 32 and had no business with her teenage self.

Kourtney M

She said should’ve stayed on her knee! Loved watching this! 💕 thank you

Sheri

Terry and Kaniyia, now you can see why Speak Now is my favorite album ! Masterpiece ! Just think about how young she was writing this album , all on her own . Her storytelling is her greatest virtue , no one paints a picture better than Taylor .

Carmen

It looks like this is how we all started our morning! 😄

Carmen

Ok but this video helped me productive early in the AM. Jumped right on my walking pad for the second half. Gave me a solid 30 minutes of walking first thing in the morning! ❤️

Sarah Jernigan

Okay but can we live stream a reaction?? We can explain things live for yall!!!

✨💙Angie G💙✨

It was so easy to wake up today knowing I got to watch this before getting ready for work!! I love yall so much!!! 🫶

Virginia

“Give me back my girlhood it was mine first” always KILLS ME

Katie Smith

Great morning starter for sure!!!

Brittany Fitzgerald

Promising grown man is a play on how media talks about young men who sexually abuse women/ get accused are talked about. Like “oh he has such a bright future, why ruin his life, such a promising young man”. But John wasn’t a young man, he was a grown man. Oh btw, John Mayer was living in an old converted church around the time they dated.

Lori Jordan

I can’t express enough how much I love yall’s videos. I look forward to them all the time. Thank you.

Liz

She was 19 and he was 32 and they had worked together on a duet and spent a lot of time together. I think at 19 she probably developed an infatuation with an attractive, talented, older man and he didn’t reciprocate the feelings. Don’t forget the time they were “together” or dating was only like 2-3 months. I think most women remember being 19 and being infatuated with someone and thinking your relationship is more than it is. I love Taylor but her treatment of John and her inability to move on from it is a little disappointing. I get it in the moment, but with age and perspective I am surprised she had to write a follow up with Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. I think it’s as simple as her thinking she was in love with an older, talented, attractive man and mistook his treatment of her as someone who wanted a relationship with her. Perhaps that’s why last summer she made a point to try to distance this song from him. She probably gets it but I think over the years John got a lot of unwarranted hate regarding this so called relationship they had.

narci◡̈

okay, now do Ours that’s about JM too but when she still was delulu 😂

Madde Norton

“and now that i know, i wish you’d left me wondering” gives me FULL BODY CHILLS every time

Nicki 🇮🇪

When she says "give me back my girlhood, it was mine first", I don't think she's talking about her virginity. I think she's talking about her innocence, her purity and this grown man clouding it with how messed up he treated her. Like he made her thought process about relationships change, like he ruined it for her. I personally think the "scarf" from All to Well is refering to the special moments her and Jake shared for her first time.

Jenna Falls

These videos are what I look forward to in the morning right as I get to work. Y’all are great!

Michelle Bourey

I’m sure somebody mentioned it, but the “should’ve” is Dear John… “you should’ve known”…. In my mind I hear you going “TAYLUUUURRR” 😂

bre

These songs give me goosebumps 😩 Appreciate the both of you! Enjoy watching your videos ❤️❤️💖💖

Jennie 🐍🖤

She wrote this when she was 32. The same age he was when he dated her. Reflecting on the situation like “how could you ever do this to me” she couldn’t imagine being with and taking advantage of a 19 year old child at 32.

Nicki 🇮🇪

Id love to see you guys react to Radio One Live Lounge Session!! The VOCALS!!!!!!! 🫨

Miranda Burner

Literally the best way to start the day, this was amazing 🫶 I definitely watched the whole thing. The Story of Us is also about a moment they had after they broke up at the CMT awards, this was confirmed by Taylor herself 🙊

Andra

Loved watching—thanks, y’all! Another comment that The Manuscript from TTPD would be a great next listen to follow these 2. Yeah, yeah, first part could be about Jake, but in my impression, it also could be John. I think the whole song (the manuscript, duh 😉), probably includes a little element of all her pasts.

Sarah Messana

Hear me out: since WCS is fresh in your mind, PLEASE 🙏🏻 consider dueting this video. This woman sings broadway style covers of T’s songs and this is her doing the bridge from WCS (it’s not long) Her voice is FIRE 🔥 and it’s basically like Eliza from Hamilton singing your favorite bridges. A reaction duet would pop off. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTNHGeR9u/

lauren ☆

woke up to an hour long video from my faves oh my GOSH!!!!! was so excited for y'all to hear these songs <3

Kelsey Wells

Just curious, do you only listen to these songs for us or are there some you put on your playlists and listen to on your own? If so which ones?

lauren ☆

"she petty" yes she is our petty queeeeeen!!!!!

Jessie Elmazi

Joined here from tiktok! And I love WCS so much!!!! So i wanna see how you feel

Sami Tarr

Ugh this was so cool to watch. Some of my thoughts: - dear John is also written as a “dear John letter” which is when men would go off to war and their girl from home would write them a letter breaking up with them. - the “if I was some paint did it splatter on a promising grown man” line alludes to how when men get called out for SA people will be like “he had such a promising future” and her calling him out splattered paint on his reputation -the stained glass windows in my mind part makes me think of how this experience colors everything she looks at now, like rose colored glasses but now it’s disjointed and stained by someone else

Katie Smith

I think y’all need to do so long London

Reid Broom

You were right about what if she had never met him.. she would have kept her “purity” or innocence I think. So her saying “give me back my girlhood it was mine first” is insane.

Reid Broom

She only says should’ve in Dear John…

Kalynn

Honestly you guys I expected an hour MINIMUM for this video, loved everything minute!

Marina Welch

I can’t wait for them to listen to “All Too Well” 10 min version I bet they cry

Tina Mendoza

Another tid bit is when they started seeing each other, John asked her to not wrote a sing about him. “You’re not going to write a song about me are you?”

Sarah

We need some more evermore tracks!!! It’s time to go, right where you left me, champagne problems, no body no crime 🤎🤎🤎

Marianne

Guys. 😭 I KNOW the story. I sing along every time. I've listened to both songs a million times. But never back to back. When I tell you I am SOBBING. It's like hearing her pain for the first time. TAYYYYLOOORRRRRR

Tuesdaylyn

This was re-released last year, also these songs clearly paint what it's like to date a narcissist. Dear john put me on to TS

Amy Baker

Love you guys! Your energy is so positive and you're both so funny. Love your appreciation of the music, lyrics, and backstory ❤️

Kathryn Mosser

She never said “should’ve” in the verses because of Dear John!! “I should’ve known”

Ashley

Love you guys. This was amaaaazzzee. Watched every second. Love all the things you guys hear that we have never heard especially as to the composure of her work. Keep them coming!!

Dreamy Mere

The part that I never see talked about is that a “Dear John Letter” is historically a letter that women would write when leaving their men. It originated in WW2. Soldiers would return from war and find their women gone and the only thing left behind were DEAR JOHN LETTERS. TAYLOR is a GENIUS

Katie Smith

I stopped listening to John Mayer a long time ago cause of this lol

TLo

In the Taylor’s version of DJ she recorded it in the past 2 years (re-record) so to hear her younger self sing it you’ll have to listen to non-TV. And watch her live Speak Now tour (back when she was 20)performance of it. She only sang it once and it is 🔥!

TLo

The instrument you were trying to guess in DJ is a steel guitar. 💞

Amber Nelson

You’re right about Should’ve not being in the song. The Should’ve is in Dear John

Lola Krenn-Grabner

Regarding only would've and could've being in the verse and not should've: she would've and could've had a different life if things didn't go down like that, but HE should've known better. She was a teenager, she didn't know better. Now that she's the same as he was, she realizes that he really should've known better.

TLo

She uses a ton of religious imagery in her songs. So even though stained glass has a real history here, you see how she ties it into church themes- tombs, praying, etc.. listen for themes like this, you’ll hear it in many songs. Love you guys!

Kelsey Johnson

Dear John live from the Speak Now Tour is a MUST for sure!!!

Mary Beth S.

The way I gasped when I saw this was almost an hour long 🤩🤩🤩🤩

C.Michelle

The stained glass windows and religious references are believed to be because John Mayers home was at one time a church.

Catherine

THIS WAS EPIC!!!! EPIC!!!! 👏👏

Melanie

Look, now you are going to get me in trouble at work because I COULD NOT WAIT until I got home to watch this hour-long video. I managed to sneak it in but I'll be watching again later. :-) Loved the double song reaction and I like the new addition of you guys listening all the way through again. As always, so good and so entertaining!! Best $5 I ever spent!

Melanie

Also, PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSE let us re-vote on that same list from last night again!!!!

Chip S

AN HOUR!? i needed this after my night! i love y’all, thank you for all your hard work <3

Camille

Another day of asking for the gofundme to send you guys to the eras tour.

Stabigail

I was wondering what show to watch on my lunch break and I just found it ❤

Jaimie C

Best be DAMN SURE I WILL WATCH AN HOUR+ VIDEO! Your videos ARE my streaming services. Netflix? Prime? Who needs them? I'll pay for your content over them any day! 💖💖

Krista 🤓🫀🧠

It’s so hard to separate the artist from the art. I’ve always loved John Mayer’s music but he’s always been so far up his own ass he can’t help himself and can’t then take responsibility. It would be interesting to hear them react to Paper Doll now! Suffice it to say I’m chomping at the bit for the next The 1975 album 🤔

Mollz

Oh. I watched the whole thing! Loved this reaction - thank you!!

Sara N

“I don’t know if y’all watched this whole video” oh don’t you worry, WE DID

Nie

The live version of this from Speak Now tour is chef’s kiss

Brandi Smith

She said all of the things she “should’ve” done/known in Dear John. That’s why she doesn’t repeat them in WCS 😢

Nathalie Garrido

maybe she referred to clarity in death because of John's song named clarity ??????

Rachel B

I was at the MN Eras show where this was her surprise song. . . . and the crowd lost their motherloving minds.

Julie

I'm 32 now. I would feel like a da** pedophile if I dated a 19 year old. Just saying ...

maddie

this was soooo good! you both are so amazing 😭 it really means so much to taylor fans to have people take the time to really understand her and her stories/lyrics. thank you 🩷 most people won’t take the time to understand her and just assume she is still writing about “petty teenage drama” yet she’s writing a universal feeling a lot of women can relate to.. its healing.

Jules

Of course we watched the whole video!!! Looooved yalls reaction to this one. Dear John has been one of my go to scream sing songs in the car since I started driving. The lyrics cut so deep and there’s so much passion in the song. Sooooooo good!!

Saymarie83

Loveeee!! Watched the whole thing and will probably watch it again later 😂

Madison

Please please please do the prophecy.

Kendall Brown

She never says shouldve because she says it in dear John!!

Nicole Walker

You know we watched the whole thingggg! I woke up, grabbed my coffee, and settled in 😂 Amazing as always!

Dreamy Mere

I take the paint splattering on a promising grown man like to be like “oh how dare she come out with Dear John” bc splattered paint is so MESSY and she’s such a “messy little girl” and he’s such a “promising grown man” bc people love to hate and blame Taylor for being a woman and talking about her experiences etc etc.

AnnMarie

LOVE you guys listening to it straight through after understanding it all. It makes such a difference in the song's impact. also love the length! and Kaniyia reacted like all of us women do at THE line! gives me goosebumps every time!

AshH

Of COURSE we watched the whole thing! In one go! This is how Swifties do it! With “if you would’ve blinked then I would’ve looked away at the first glance”: I always take that to mean that she never would have even looked at him twice. She would’ve walked away. It never would’ve been.

Brittany

You’re a crisis of my faith BROKE me. She mad, mad.

Jayme McCowen

She sounds younger because she’s trying to mimic the non-Taylor’s version as much as she can so that people will buy Taylor’s Version vs the old one- she’s actually not much younger than she is now as it was just released last year 🥰 I am in love with your reactions- and I will never not watch a 52 minute by you guys! I’m so glad you’re getting into the lore!

Katie

I'd LOVE to see you guys do a reaction to her live performance of Dear John from the Speak Now tour, It's SO good!!!

Livjhxx

PLEASE do All Too Well PLEASEEEE 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Mia Flores

50 minute video right before I start my makeup?? Y’all are feedinggggg

Lindsay

My favorite little thing is that WCS has the would’ves and could’ves, but all the should’ve’s are in DJ (ie he should’ve known better).

Tortured poets

Hot damn I forgot how much I love Dear John. It’s so damn good. Her voice. The melody. The belting at the end. The guitar. SO GOOD

Billie Back

Wonder if he took her virginity?!?! Sure sounds like it.

Analisa Ramirez

I’m shining like fireworks over your sad empty town is probably one of the best lines of all time. Like that has gotta sting to hear that said about you.

Isabel

If I was paint did it splatter on a promising grown man, IS her being petty. Cause when a teen guy messes up they always say he was a promising young man, when all this happened they blamed Taylor for blaming John, but he was GROWN. He was freakin 32, he SHOULD HAVE BEEN BLAMED.

Beth

Supposedly she lost her virginity to Jake Gyllenhaal a couple years after JM and someone close to her let it slip. But I think she is like me, and would rather the world believe it happened during a more real relationship, than at 19 when it really happened, so I will always believe it was really with John Mayer and she’s admitting that when she says he took her girlhood. My experience was similar and only my closest friends (and now all of you lol) know when it really happened for me…

Courtneyt636

You guys are officially level 13 swifties!! Making the connections in both those songs and Kaniyia pointing out the similarities between “you should be” and “I should’ve known” genius girl! The connections between songs are just one of the many geniuses of Taylor’s music. You have to listen to London Boy, DayLight, and You’re Losing Me before So Long London. Those 4 songs are super connected and about her relationship with Joe Alwyn.

Angie Roman

yes I did stayed until the end to watch the whole thing!… I love breaking the song down and then hear it through again

Kellie McClure

If i was paint did i splatter on a promising grown man is a reference to how when men prey on women society is concerned about the mans reputation and his bright future not what it did to the woman.

Stephy

Duh of course we watched the whole video!!! I get chills every time I hear would’ve could’ve should’ve 😥😥😥I fight with you in my sleep the tomb won’t close ahhhhh goosebumps and the give me back my girlhood it was mine first🫣😢😢🥺

batManda

Technically not younger Taylor if this is a TV. It’s barely a year old 😉

Alli ✨Karma’s Version ✨

I love that you are doing this! So many of her songs and meanings are connected! It is so cool to see how you are putting the pieces together- and definitely becoming Swifties! 🫶🏼 Keep it coming! All Too Well 10 min version (with and without short film directed by Taylor) should be next!

Tortured poets

Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first had my jaw ON THE FLOOR when I first heard it

Maggie

Y’all got it so right at the end there: she doesn’t say “should’ve” in the verse because she says “you should've known” in Dear John…!!!

Tortured poets

Regarding “promising grown man,” in a lot of trials regarding sexual assault, judges let boys off with a light sentence saying he’s “got a bright future”, they’re a “promising young man,” and this shouldn’t mar their record. Paint splattered is like marring. I’m not saying he SA’d Taylor, but it’s a parallel she’s drawing.

Kathleen Wichman

Like the playback but love when you know the back story going into listening. Makes the lines so much more impactful. Love your reactions

Tracey Jwanier

Keep long we love it love you both and love my Taylor

Angie Whitiken

Technical note-- I wish that your voices were the same volume as the music. It's like in an action movie where if you turn it up to hear the dialog, then the explosions are too loud. 😀

Katie

If y’all liked dear John, you should react to “all too well”! My opinion is listen to the song first then watch the short film. Y’all are such a joy to watch! Please keep doing these!!

Madi

Kaniyia is a fellow reader ahhhh love you even more now haha 🥰

Dawn

Am I the only one that feels like she is low key saying he forced himself on her and made her feel like she didn’t have a choice or she would lose him ( like nightmares at night).

Ally

Not sure if this has been brought up already, but Taylor’s version means she re-recorded it, so it’s actually fun to hear the difference in her voice and choices from when she was younger. The more mature voice carries even more meaning, in my opinion, as someone who “grew up with her” as one of my favorite artists. You two are so fun! Looking forward to seeing where all of this goes for you. I hope you feel the support and how much people are drawn to you! ✨

Britt Garrett

Kaniyia GETS IT. These songs just hit different for women.

Swiftie_VeteranTina

U guys have to watch her SING THIS on her Speak Now tour video!!!!! U can see the EMOTION AND FEEL IT!!! On the tour...fireworks go off when she sings I'm shining like fireworks over your sad empty town!! It was EPIC!!!

Gabrielly Oliveira

She wrote 'would've could've should've' after seeing him in some Awards event - that's why we have the "memories feel like weapons". Also, it was so smart noticing about the "should've" part in basically first listen! i believe that she did that on purpose, bc the "should've's" and the wondering part were made in Dear John.

Sara

I knew I had seen a clip of y’all doing ‘Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve’ on your stories 😂

J W

I’m so proud of you Kaniyia. YOU GOT IT GIRL. Been watching yall since the beginning. So proud ☺️☺️

Dee

Everyday i look forward to you growing with us.

Swiftie_VeteranTina

John Mayer burned alot of people ie traitors and had a habit of dating young girls...he played with Taylor's emotions constantly and played head games!!!

Swiftie_VeteranTina

Would've Could've Should've: yes u got it!!! JOHN Mayer used to live in a church with stained glass windows...that was turned into an apartment

Heyo

Also yall back when soldiers went off to war when their girls would break up with them they called it a ‘Dear John’ letter so she’s using this song as her break up letter to him - it’s also a spin that his name is John ;) she’s brilliant

Lindsey Cofer

When I paid to become a member I told myself I could only watch y’all as I walked outside or on the treadmill. Got those steps in today, thanks for the super entertaining 52 minutes!

Jacob C

I have thoughts on the fact she never says should’ve in a verse on would’ve could’ve should’ve, and I think it’s cuz she said it so many times on dear John (I should’ve known/ You should’ve known) and that was all to be said really

Morgan

Pleeeease do the black dog

Todd

Love the way y’all are starting to draw parallels with her other songs! Your videos make me feel like I’m listening for the first time again.

Brittney Watson

Loved the longer video-we are ready for a full album live the moment you guys are ❤️

Brittney Watson

My cardio FLEW by thanks to this video 😅

Eldina Zahirovic

“Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts, give me back my girlhood it was mine first” sums up the song for me really well. She hasn’t been able to let go of this period of her life and keeps going back to how he should’ve known better since he was the grown man and she was so young but she still took the heat for this relationship. Everyone, including JM, made her out to be problematic and out to ruin his reputation but he actually took advantage of her naivety. Dating a much older man put her in his grown world and she didn’t get to experience the adolescent version of her life that she should’ve at that time. I think this is the most heartbreaking bridge she has ever written but that might be because it’s personal for me too. 😅

LindseyMarie

New subscriber! I saw the teaser and HAD to have it!Thank you for doing these together!!

Antoinette

I sent y’all something to your PO Box and it said it’d arrive on Friday!!! If you could include me in your unboxing video 😊😊

Sparkles341

I loved this entire video!! Thank you guys for doing such a long one — it was really fun watching/listening to y’all work through the music & the lyrics, you’re great!!!

Kim

The girlhood line rips my heart out every damn time. It’s visceral. 😔

bookishbear

I've heard these a million times and watching this I'm cryinggggg like it's the first listen 🥲🥲🥲 TAYLORRRR

Samm

Please do “Happiness” it will break you, but so worth it

Lauren

Please do All Too Well 10 minute version!!

BriLuna

I love the frantic build up in the song. K was right about its like her trying to rid herself of it. You can hear her anxiety and anger rise as she tries to scrape this man from her bones. She’s trying to scrub herself clean bc he made her “dirty” and feel violated and disgusted with herself. In reality it was all him. He strung her along & then basically was like “What? We’re not together.” After getting what he wanted. (From what I remember of that time. Remember he had a lot of manic episodes before that re: Jen Aniston and Jessica Simpson and airing their sex lives.) His bi-polar was out of control. (Not an excuse, just a detail.) I wish he hadn’t been so scuzzy bc he really can play guitar and write a song. Those 2 could’ve made absolutely magic with music.

Denise

All too Well (10 min version) needs to be next!

pickle ash

they worked together on the song "Half of My Heart" & the music video for it took place in a church with stained glass windows!!!! & double meaning to "if clarity's in death" because his hit song at the time was Clarity

pickle ash

This is my long take on Would've, Could've, Should've & Dear John: Midnights album was made from "12 sleepless nights" during the time she was re-recording her albums & reliving all the moments that made her write these songs. WCS is an adult reflection on DJ, and what she wishes her younger self would've & could've done. Dear John is the "Should've" of verses of Would've, Could've, Should've. in DJ, she sings "I should've known" in verse 1 & in v2 sings "YOU should've known" so she initially blames herself for not knowing better. In WCS, she sings "if YOU would've blinked -- YOU could've spit" in v1 & then in v2 "I would've gone along w the righteous - I could've gone on as I was". This switch shows her mature reflection on the situation, and that it was him as an adult who is to fault & it had consequences on her as a result. Similarly, the line "Now that I know, I wish YOU'D left me wondering" reflects how he is accountable for it all. Both songs really connect how young she was in the situation too. "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with" (DJ) -> "if you never touched me i would've gone along with the righteous," "if i was a child did it matter if you got to wash your hands?", & "give me back my girlhood it was mine first" (WCS) They also have ties to Haunted! "And now that I'm grown, I'm scared of ghosts, memories feel like weapons" WCS -- "Something made your eyes go cold....Can't turn back I'm haunted"

Halley

I haven't scrolled to see if this was mentioned but "over your sad empty town" is a play on Mayer/Mayor"

Tylyn

All Too Well, then listen to The Moment I Knew. The Short film of All Too Well is beautiful to watch as well.

Priscilla Rader

When K started singing tolerate it and tying it together, the smile on my face. Y'all get it!

Valentine Truong

Idk if it was mentioned here but a “dear John” letter a letter sent by women to tell their army partner that the relationship is over

Kristina

Taylor’s so good at writing songs that everyone can relate to in some way, like a manipulative relationship between a woman who’s too young and an older guy who should’ve known better. She was too sincere and innocent for the games he played with her. And that emotional wound changed her fundamentally as a person. We all have one of those in our past, right? Right? 😂😬

erinslovely

Totally enjoyed thank you Terry & Kaniyia!

Crystal Kientz

Keep the long in depth videos coming! Love watching you two!

Hannah Brothers

A little context for the title “Dear John”… “dear John letters” were letters that women would write to their significant other’s that were off fighting in a war to let them know they were leaving them. So this John is John’s “dear John letter”

Kailie Fennell

The best line is. Give me back my girlhood it was mine first. 💔

Omar Flores

Need “ALL TOO WELL” 10min version 🙏🏼💕

Ejami

Also it's not her younger self, this is just a Re recording of her old album so it's taylor now 😁

Steve

Also a “Dear John Letter” is a generic term for a break up letter, so that wouldn’t have been a reason to sue. John just happens to be his name.

Jessica Barrett

The promising grown man lyric (I think) is a reference to the Brock Turner/Stanford sexual assault case. Brock was convicted but given a lenient sentence in part because the judge said he was a “promising young man.” The judge excused his bad behavior without considering how harmful his actions were to the woman he assaulted and then dragged through a long drawn out court case. She is using GROWN man to flip it and say this phrase that is often used to excuse bad male behavior towards women is even less applicable because John was a grown man (who should’ve known better).

Lucy Milligan

Love you guys, could watch you react to paint drying!! Thank you for blessing us with an hour long reaction to two of my favourite songs in her discography! This video is single handedly curing my hangover rn

Catherine C

I’m sure someone has covered this but “promising young man” is always the line used when a (usually privileged) man has been accused of something and that accusation might ruin his life. Regardless of what his crime might have done to his victim.

Joewalla

Please please listen to all to well 10min version. It’s about Jake Gylienhaal. Her vocals are insane.

Lindsay Frazier

It gets even crazier if you know all of the background with Jessica Simpson. She wrote about it in her book. He was emotionally abusive towards her, and used the “younger version” of her, Taylor, to get back at her.

Kasey

The first comment im sharing is something I read in a ppost about this song at some point (so the 1st point is not my thoughts. Unfortunately, I can't give credit to the person since I can't remember where I read it!) Anyways, Taylor has talked about growing up as a Christian. Many of her songs make religious references in them. And there are quite a few in this song. First, being the lyric "And if I was a child, did it matter If you got to wash your hands?" and the person in the post connected it to Poncious Pilate in the Bible washing his hands of Jesus's blood and saying that he was innocent of the blood of this [Jesus] person. Second, the lyric about "give me back my girlhood it was mine first". I'm a couple years older than Taylor. I grew up in the Church as well, and during my teen years there was a huge push on "Purity Culture". It was much more intense than just "saving yourself for marriage" i.e. being a virgin when you get married. HUGE NOTE: I am in NO WAY commenting on the religious sin or lack there of pertaining to sex before marriage in the context of morality. I am also not sharing my views on the subject of it being "right" or "wrong". I am sharing the Christian culture of the time I was a teenager in an evangelical church that I wonder if Taylor grew up with/was influenced by. Ok, back to the post. So when Taylor talks about "giving up her girlhood" it makes me wonder if it was more than just the physical act of sex but also includes the religious upbringing and innocence she had prior to the relationship. Which also ties into the line of "I would've stayed on my knees" as well as " you never touched me, I would've Gone along with the righteous" and "you're a crisis of my faith". Finally, a thought on "stained glass windows in my mind". I wasn't aware of the tie to Mayer on this line. But I wonder if it has a double meaning as well. A stained glass window is shards of broken glass that is put together in a way to make a beautiful piece of art. To me, it kind of pulls together the whoke song of Taylor mentions some of the good parts like "the pain was heaven" but overall it was just a painful relationship that haunts her. Plus, many churches have stained glass windows as well so maybe it ties into that religious theme again?

Gabby

I dont think yall understand. I could watch you guys react and talk FOR HOURS and never get bored. OBSESSED ❤️🤌

Whitney

Literally watched every second. You guys are awesome and hilarious!

Grace Lovelace

Love the 1 hour reaction, no complaints here. Can’t wait for all too well.

Sereta Sutton

The first few lines are like the connection of meeting someone and they either give you an inviting look or they give you an I’m unapproachable look kinda of thing. Like you were clearly interested vs treating me like nothing in a passing hey. Poison used as a reference of it was something that you shouldn’t have done or if it would have been a relationship that would tarnish you then it would have been wrong or tasted wrong like you shouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t continue the relationship. You could have stopped it. Paint splashed on a promising grown man being a stain on your reputation that you can’t get out. Again, you didn’t have to enter into a relationship with me that could have turned out to be all these things.. “you should’ve known”.

Kim Martineau

It’s like a ‘dear John’ letter. Like in the old days Also he used her cause she was the new thing in the industry and he took her virginity. And then left her high and dry. He has a long reputation of doing this to female artists. He’s been with several. She was really heart broken and everyone warned her to run ! Sorry long story short lol

rhy

Love the long videos. Thanks!

Sereta Sutton

Also. Pain was Heaven was she saw someone that she probably thought was too old for her but she was “lucky” that he looked at her. She was excited he gave her the time of day and it hurt because of how he treated her but she was so into him and cared for him that it felt like Heaven. But it was torture.

Channing Johnson

If clarity is in death, John has a song named Clarity.

Kathy Gilmore

Thank you!!! I watched this morning while getting ready for work! Love you guys!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻

🦄 Holly P 🦄

The "clarity" line is definitely a reference to JM's song Clarity from his second record Heavier Things... I wish more swifties picked up on this!

Kirsten Johnson

You guys deserve a vacation for giving us alllll that. Loved it! Kaniya is picking up on those lyrics like a T Swift scholar!

Erica Brabbin

I really appreciate that you guys appreciate the music as well as the lyrics. It's a nice balance. Like the immediate need to redo a bit just speaks to how much you guys love the music, the melody, the harmonies excellent video!

Jessica Dodds

Loved it!!!!!!! Love seeing you re watching it usually takes me 3/4 times to really get and feel the depth. Seems like the songs just get better the more you listen and really notice stuff More More More never too long!!!!!

stacy wulfekuhle

He sought her out and hit her up on Twitter, which thrilled her because she was a fan. He groomed her alright and there is no way in hell he didn’t have sex with her. From the lyrics “ I fight with you in my sleep” I think he forced it on her before she was really ready. The promising grown man probably didn’t even realize what he did to her. It was very common back then for men to ignore signals and the word no!

K Clark

Loved it! I didn’t love Dear John before but you made me like it! Love love love the natural chemistry between you two!

EmC_hammered

I feel like I’m listening to Taylor for the first time again through y’all’s reactions 🥲

Angelica 🫶🏻❤️

Shortest hour of my life (and yes i fell asleep last night so i only got a chance to watch it now after work🫠)

Pamela

Y’all!!!!!! 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶

Kim Martineau

Awesome!! I love you all did two songs!! She has so many like this. You are SWIFTIES! She is an absolute MASTERMIND! Do that one too please. Mastermind!

Natalie Johnson

The lore is, he pressured her into taking her v1rg1n1ty which is on par with JD. He’s known for pressuring women… like he’s not a good person at all

Chelsea

The “shouldve” is missing because its in Dear John! “You should’ve known” 🥰

Zoë

Loved this video so much h. i’m sure someone said this but the “years of tearing down our banners, you and I” I think also refers to him slamming her in the media after DJ came out. He basically said it was cheap, bad songwriting. I’ve also always interpreted “i would stayed on my knees” in two ways- (1) referring to growing up christian, not being “corrupted”, but also (2) she never would have ended up standing up for herself or getting stronger, either.

Michelle Nolan

Love this so much! I wish I could relive hearing that the first time!!

Kassi

That hour went by so fast!

Cynthia Wyatt

Chills chills and more chills!! ❤️❤️ this song. Taylor gets it right when she said he should’ve known.

Jasmine Lambert

Notice how in would've could've should've she never actually says should've in any of the verses apart from when singing the whole song title because she used all her should've's in dear John (I should've known) and I just think that's so evil of her in the best way

Katie

I think you guys need to do The Manuscript too (more about a grown ass man messing around with a girl too young for them, but I think that one was about Jake based on the references) it breaks my heart every time.

Alexandra LaPointe

Loveeeee as a new swiftie I’m learning so much 😅

Claire Whitehead

The typical phrase is “promising young man” but he was in his 30s. He was very much an adult who had released some fantastic music and everyone thought he was in the trajectory to have several more hit albums, but none of that came to fruition. His music and popularity took a dive following the release of Dear John and he really never recovered. He had so much potential, but he was an adult so he’s a promising grown man instead of a promising young man

Erica Alex

"The Mauniscript" in TTPD gives a recounting of her past relationship with JM. And it's actually lovely and seems like she's gotten that peace she's been looking for. Like you said Kaniyia, would of could of sounds like she's trying to shake it off of her. She's so brilliant, I can't even.

Miranda Adams

I needed this! Love y’all so much 🫶🏼😭

Jessibubbbly

The Manuscript is the final piece of the trilogy. She’s done with him.

Rachel

I cried. 😭 WCS makes me cry every. single. time. I love these two songs and I love yall!! 🫶🏼❤️❤️

Kimberlee Peterson

Terry is going to owe all of us new phones by the end of this 🤣🤣🤣🫶🏻

Kristin Lohr

LOVE LOVE LOVE the second listen through format!! Also, I think it could be helpful to have some sort of mod who can give you just enough context about songs to make them make sense without spoiling the vibes of a first listen. Thank you so much for putting out uncut content! I know it probably feels vulnerable but the people who get it, GET. IT. I love hearing you break it down melodically and it's clear y'all can SING and that you appreciate the theater of it all!!

Emily

Another incredible Patreon!

Kandice Lopez

You should also listen to “Paper Doll” by John Mayer (rumored to be about Taylor) he says “you’re like 22 girls in one” referencing her song 22 and he say “And make yourself some angel wings And if those angel wings don't fly Someone's gonna paint you another sky” obviously referencing “paint me a blue sky” in Dear John BUT Taylor also sang in the Victoria’s Secret show that year and what are Victoria’s Secrets models called…angels and they wear wings in the show (that maybe a stretch but I like the connection). Taylor also sings on John’s song “Half of my Heart” where he basically says he can’t love her.

Jill Dickerson

I loved it!!! An hour was perfect after my day!! Love how you take the time with the music ❤️

Pamela Hart

Yes yes! Definitely need to listen to them one more time so you hear it all together!

Taylor

All too well short film pleaseee

Michelle A

Read Jessica Simpson's memoir (I know Kaniyia likes to read!!) and you'll really question John Mayer 😬 This was so good, thank you for sharing! Watching the two of you is the perfect mental break!!

Ashlyn Bradshaw

He lived in a converted parish house with massive stained glass windows 😭😭

Jenny Liu

I believe she wrote this when she was 32, the same age he was

Mikayla Gilkerson

Yall just get it every time like you never miss the message or the little aspects of the songs that make them so good

Heather M

She had to speak his language so she used his style. Brilliant and petty. Love it.

Nicolette

Y’all really really really need to see her perform this live on tour when she was 19 in the purple dress. The emotion is insane and it’s one of my favorite performances of hers.

Sharibaby678

You guys are doing SO WELL! You’re on your way to earning your degree at Taylor University!! 😜😜😜

Kent

YESSS!!!! Y’all are giving exactly what we’re asking for; the re-listening and all. Snaps for you 🫰🏼🫰🏼🫰🏼

Kyler

You should make merch that says, who says that Taylor

Kyler

Who says that, Taylor

Ashley S

You guys!!! I can’t put into words how much I love watching your reactions 🫶🏻. I echo everyone who has said I feel like I’m hearing these songs again for the first time with you. An hour wasn’t long enough!!! These 2 songs really hit once you know the backstory. My mind is blown every time I hear DJ and think about how she was only 20 when she wrote that masterpiece. The live performance from the Speak Now tour with timed fireworks to go with the lyrics 🫠 Midnights IMO has some of her most fabulous lyrics and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is certainly no exception! Thank you for this amazing content!

Katherine B

Thank you for posting the songs in their entirety after you pause to discuss. My brain appreciates it and it’s like you were reading it 😟😅.

Shannon Taylor

I love the reference “I took your matches before fire could catch me”.. along with the “ lifeless eyes cause you burned them out”. Makes me think he was gaslighting her.. and she took the matches for the gaslighting and lit up /shined like fireworks all over his sad empty town.

Sharibaby678

Yes, she’s singing it quickly and frantically like her brain is spinning and she can’t let it go even though it’s dead.

Sharibaby678

That line, “give me back my girlhood it was mine first” 😳🥺👀

Courtney Anderson

Y’all the best! Thanks for all yall do for us Swifties!

Shawn carni

LOVED THIS VIDEO 🫶🫶Thank you for these reactions.

Kyler

You should also do I Think He Knows

Amanda

I don’t care how long these are… I watch every second!!!! And I love the breakdown then listening again to fully appreciate the song 🤌🤌🤌

Sofia

Also when you think of Dear John letters from war… John Mayer never had a case and I love it. She’s so brilliant

Sharibaby678

Watched the whole thing! Loved it! You guys are awesome! Someone explained on Tik Tok once, about the “should’ve” part and I was 🤯. But now I don’t remember it! 🤣🤣

Holly Kilness Packett

She wrote Dear John when she was 19 or 20 (young and hurt) and WCS when she was 31 or 32 (his age at the time when he was dating her). The two perspectives are so important.

Rachel Griffin

If you sold a shirt with two text bubbles saying ‘Taylor be eating’ ‘munch munch motherfucker,’ I might have to buy it. 😂

Rachel Griffin

When John Mayer said his ‘d*ck’ was a ‘white supremacist’ because he didn’t find women of color attractive, that was my line with that man. I don’t deny his talent. But I don’t support his being a complete asshole who is forgiven that fact because of his talent. The ick is real.

Tawni Creta

She doesn’t say “should’ve” because SHE shouldn’t have done anything. HE “should’ve” known better.

Raevv'n Leedham

Love your reactions so much!!! Please consider doing Epiphany <3

Kristy K

I actually think the original song needs to be listened too for the youthfulness in her voice and the pain she was actually feeling at the time she recorded it just hits different

Crystal Elizabeth Validakis

‘Promising young man’ - the reason judges, media etc give when young rich, white college boys commit assaults and do not pay for their crimes through the justice system. She’s saying promising GROWN man to emphasise that he got away with it for the same reason. It’s feminist commentary and a way to explain her feelings at the same time. Lyrical genius.

Breezy

Dear John was written when she was younger and would’ve, could’ve, should’ve was written for midnights while she was re-recording Taylor’s version for speak now. While she is recording the Taylor’s version all those old feelings and wounds are being revisited and brought back up the surface again. I believe she also wrote would’ve, could’ve, should’ve when she was 32. The age John was when he dated Taylor and it reflects in the song that she would never have been interested in someone 19 at 32 and how easy it was for someone mature and more experienced to manipulate someone younger.

Rachel

I literally joined this app specifically for you guys, I love your videos sm. It’s like showing your non-swiftie friends her music and making them swifties and I love that for us all.

Iris Garcia

Needed this video today! 😎🫶🏽

Iris Garcia

Terry saying “I know he was pissed reading this” no truer words have been spoken 😂 Taylor can flip any negative to a positive because she’s so intelligent.

Iris Garcia

Flipping the patriarchy one song at a time by becoming a true self made billionaire woman.

Iris Garcia

The Taylor’s versions were re recorded in the last few years so she also sang them in the style from when she was younger

Emily roach

You were right, she doesn’t say should’ve. She only said it in Dear John, because the blame is on the grown adult. He is the one who *should* have done differently!! Also, I love how petulant she sounds when she says “give it back it was mine first,” alluding to the innocence she had at that time. Lastly “promising grown man” is a play on how they talk about perpetrators of ipv, “he is a promising young man, he shouldn’t be punished too harshly.” Already, that’s bs, but she adds to it being like he wasn’t even young.

Mollz

Damn. I had to come back and watch this one all over again.

Holly

Not only was he inappropriately older than her he was in his PRIME and an idol for so many young song writers and young women. How exciting and then gutting for her to have his attention in particular.

Haylee Sparks

Of course we watched the whole video lol

Lauren Stalbaum

and a “dear john” is a comment n term for men who would receive a letter in war that their lady left them or married someone else. like it’s very common for people to get “dear johned” so his case didn’t hold bc this song could apply to anyone. it was also in the movie “dear john”. then “chess game” like when you play chess you have to calculate your move off of what your opponent is doing and it’s so paralyzing and stressful but she was living her life for HIM “long were the big he s when my days once revolved around you” like you’re my entire world and it’s exhausting and saddening like UGGGGGGHHHH and then would’ve could’ve should is older tay looking back like no girl ur OKAY we made it out but no matter how much time passes it’s okay to be mad THE ARTISTRY UGGGGHHHH

Lindsay Frazier

I also want to add WHEN YOU DO DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS- It is important to know that this song is based off the movie Someone Great. Which was written after the writer listened to Clean. It’s a circle of Taylor inspiring the movie, and then the moving inspiring a new song. 😍

Sadie

I interpreted the “tomb won’t close” line like when we lay things to rest like trauma in our mind. We put it inside a box and lock it away to protect ourselves from the memories. So with a tomb she’s trying to lay the dead relationship to rest so she can move on but it won’t close 🥺

Elle Dougherty

The way I always burst into tears when she sings GIVE ME BACK MY GIRLHOOD IT WAS MINE FIRST 😭 for those of us that know 😭😭 Also, “promising grown man” is a play on “promising young woman”, she’s basically being petty like you said, because she was the one that had all the potential and was still learning about herself and growing her career while he was already established and much older. Also it’s a shoutout to the way the media covers any man that gets in “trouble” (Brock Turner cough cough) and makes excuses for them, e.g. “we don’t want to ruin his swimming career over one silly mistake” 💀 The way y’all are making me think about these lyrics more than I already do!! It’s so crazy, love y’all!

emma

The "stained glass windows" line refers to the fact that John Mayer lived in a house that was converted from an old church with stained glass windows in it while Taylor and him were together Some other theories I saw about this line on reddit (not taking credit for any of these thoughts/ideas): When light passes through stained glass it changes colors, and it seems to have a very clear mark in all the objects it touches as if this relationship has impacted the perception she's had of her life and of any other relationships she's had afterward. It affects her, even today. That's why she can't let it go. Also, a stained glass window is an image created from a lot of broken pieces of glass, so you can interpret it as her having to gather up all these different pieces to make sense of what the relationship was, to see the hurt through the beauty Stained glass windows can be beautiful but they also depict very dark scenes, especially in Catholicism. Furthermore, a stained glass window is ironic because it’s a window, but you can’t really see out of it because the colors and pictures distort the outside world. The stained glass window in her mind distorts the outside world with visions of the past. It’s an incredible metaphor for PTSD, trauma, grief- anything that permanently distorts the present with the past. Stained glass windows within churches usually depict scenes from the Bible. I imagine a tomb or church filled with all these scenes that haunt me - like a gallery of trauma. The relationship could have been so life altering for her that it isn't some footnote or even a grave, it's a full blown tomb with all these scenes playing out constantly. The relationship can't die because it changed her so fundamentally that she can't separate herself from it. There's pre relationship Taylor and post relationship Taylor and she can't ever go back. If the stained glass windows are memories then some of them will be the moments where she loses bits of old self. You don't realize at the time what's happening but looking back, those moments become the iconography of your own story. She can't move on from the tomb because deep down, it's not actually the tomb of the relationship, it's her tomb, the tomb of the Taylor she lost.

Petition for Wildest Dreams to show 1989 some more love

Margaret Drisi

“Promising young man” is a very common trope used when someone is trying to hold a boy accountable for his actions. School administrations, judges, defense lawyers… all trying to draw sympathy for a perpetrator rather than for a victim. So her line “promising GROWN man” is leaning into that rhetoric ironically and emphasizing that he wasn’t just a “boy being a boy,” he was a grown man making questionable decisions with a very young woman.

Margaret Drisi

I wonder about “if clarity’s in death” because one of John Mayer’s songs is named Clarity. Also, I’m scared of Ghosts… Katy Perry has a song called Ghosts and she dates JM after TS.

Leanne

Ooooh you guys haven’t done all too well 10 min version. You guys will die

ila garza

The common phrase is promising young man, however she said grown man because he was fully GROWN, this is regarding the lawsuit which he claimed was damaging his career and reputation (which he already had) so it’s kind of her mocking him like oh did I ruin your life? Your future? Youre a grown ass man not a “promising young man” it’s a dig at him like the you’re so vain performance she did after the lawsuit. I feel like she said it bc to this day he still is making himself out to be the victim so she’s saying like did I splatter my paint on your masterpiece? Which could also be a reference to her being so young (in my mind I see the image of a little kid ruining an adults painting or couch or whatever and them being so pissed off but it’s like, why are u mad u gave a kid paint and they spilled it, don’t blame a child for being a child ykwim?) also I think the most important detail about wcs is the fact that she wrote it and released it at 32 so it’s like she’s confronting what he said that she was so immature and childish when she wrote dj, but she’s saying like babe I’m 32 now and there’s no way in hell I’d do the same thing u did. I also personally think closure from evermore is abt him too bc of this line. Ty for coming to my ted talk screw jm

Caitlin Dazi

she says would've and could've, but the should've is in dear john, i/you should've known. I love that and how you noticed it was missing!

Erika Scott

“I love John but you was wrong for this one” is such a mood

Katherine

He was grown, she was 19 --still a child.

Leslie Jackson

“Give my back my girlhood it was mine first” KILLED ME!!!!

Shantini Vyas

The “Taylor’s Versions” were re-recorded versions, they’re more recent. So you’re not hearing her when she was younger!

Chrissie Edwards

Also. A dear John letter is old timey for a break up letter

Christine Butler

Yup you got it. She lost her virginity to that fool but if he wouldn’t have gave her the attention she wanted she would’ve never had to go through that but also she’d probably be a different person or some of her other relationships after would’ve been a little different. It’s like pros and cons like I wouldn’t be scared of love in this or that sense but also I wouldn’t have grown from that experience.

LA

I felt like Taylor was not seen for her talent by the world when she was starting out. There’s a lot of emotions, talent even in the early years of her career. And now the world just catching up.

✨Annie✨

Whole video was fire!!! You got all the messages!! She’s a brilliant writer. These songs together are crushing!!

Just Julie

PLEEEEEEASE do the Live performance of Dear John from her Speak Now tour. It’s phenomenal! Her expressions and performance are unparalleled; so incredible and powerful.

Katie

You get it? …… No. 🤣 I love seeing you two coming to the dark side and becoming Swifties 🫶🏻

Just Julie

Oftentimes SA survivors have to watch their attackers be given lax sentences for their crimes because “well, we don’t want to ruin the life of a promising young man.” She was 19. John Mayer was 32. And he was at the prime of his career. “If I was some paint, did it splatter on a promising grown man?” Meaning, Oh, did little young me make a stain on your GROWN ASS and tarnish your image? It’s a play on the idea that she, the victim, is somehow to blame for the situation (as society often treats it).

Becca Holmes

Would've Could've Should've was just lyrically amazing. The lyrics "now that I'm grown, I'm scared of ghosts" 🤯 Typically when you're a child you're scared of ghosts and things that go bump in the night, and when you're an adult you can rationalize that it's not real. But she's say NOW that she's grown she's scared. Entering all these relationships and being haunted by this experience has her looking around corners and seeing things that might not be there. Her memories from that time continue to hurt her and have now manifested as weapons and the wound won't close. People say you find clarity in death, but here she is at 32 (same age he was) looking back, and she has complete clarity about the situation. And it still continues to haunt her instead of staying dead and buried in her past because you never forget your first and he took her girlhood. She just wants to move on and have faith in something healthy and not have this trauma from her past haunting her relationships, but she's seeing it through stained glass windows when she's looking back and it's all a little blurred and fragmented on what actually happened so she's jumping at ghosts in her current relationships. And then there's the whole religious undertone and that lost of innocence and "purity" Absolutely genius 🤯🤯🤯

Brandi 🫶🐍

The Taylors versions of albums were recorded in the last several years. But it’s amazing how she can go back to sound similar to her younger vocals. She’s absolutely brilliant.

Natalie Higginbotham

She said should’ve in dear john so yes it’s on purpose that she didn’t say should’ve except for the beginning that one time.

Brandi 🫶🐍

I think every album of Taylor’s has won a Grammy in one category or multiple but yes Midnights is amazing. I’d be surprised if TTPD doesn’t win album of the year.

Brandi 🫶🐍

Would’ve could’ve should’ve was mostly written during the Speak Now re-record. She’s said that she revisited the feelings and emotions during each era which is why I think this song was written.

Brandi 🫶🐍

Watched this whole episode. 🤩🤩🤩

Boo

We need munch munch mfer merch! Love your content. These are two of my favorite songs!

CaliRN

I have watched this video 3 or 4 times now and I love it EVERY. TIME. I can’t wait for the longer versions- you’re reactions are just THE BEST ❤️

Tracy

Will someone help me understand why they are pushing All too well off? Are they trying to get more followers first? I swear I’m canceling my Patreon subscription until they do it

kate

Loved this video 😭😭🫶 London boy x So long, London will be the death of me next 🥲 (I’d love to see your reactions to be honest)

BioLady91

My favorite thing about this pair of songs is that in would’ve could’ve should’ve she doesn’t actually use should’ve because the should’ve is in dear John.

Grayce Crisler

Why is NO ONE talking about “give me back my girlhood” yall she’s talking about her virginity!! Taylor grew up Christian and gave away her virginity to this man who SHOULDVE known better bc he was far past grown and he took her girlhood. Now she can’t stop regretting it and that’s why it sticks with her all this time.

💙Dahlia💙

WCS was released 13 years after Dear John... When she was the same age as John was when they dated. Also she wrote Dear John completely on her own (all of the speak now album actually and at 19)

Lauren

Should we tell them to listen to Demi’s 29?

Molli Sessions

i can’t believe he tried to sue her over dear john

stephanie_pdx

Two things about Dear John I want to add: 1. A "Dear John" letter is "a letter written to a man by his wife or romantic partner to inform him that their relationship is over." This is a big reason John Mayer couldn't sue; it's an expression that long predates his existence. "I stopped picking up and this song is to let you know why." 2. It may be frowned upon by some, but I highly recommend listing to the original version recorded when she was still 19. It cuts in a way that I feel like the Taylor's Version she recorded at 31 (note: still younger than John was when they dated) doesn't. BUT, her being his age when she recorded Would've, Could've, Should've makes that song hit in a way that is just beyond. It's a feeling also captured in "29" by Demi Lovato; there is something about reaching the age this person was when they manipulated you and reaching a whole new level of horror about it, because you realize how truly young you consider people that age to be.

sjmcdeezy

fyi she wrote this song after seeing him at the Grammy’s a few years ago and the mere sight of him infuriated her so she went home and wrote this song in 1 night!!!

Kristin K

The “promising grown man” is a dig at the “he’s a promising young man” as the excuse people make to look past young men’s bad behavior towards women and putting the man’s reputation and future as the most important thing to protect because they’re “young”…but he was a grown ass 32 year old man

Kate

“Clarity in death” I took that as her losing her ‘innocence’ if we know what I mean…so she has to go through that for the first time with someone who just threw her away to grow and learn.

Dianna Doyle

Speak Now TV is her older voice but she did release this when she was younger. Find the YT of her performing it during the Speak Now tour. Yes, petty Taylor at her best! 😂And heartbreaking. 💔

theoriginalbk

Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is one of her best songs. Like Top 5. And it’s my favorite song on Midnights. I know her faith has always been important to her so all of the religious themes in this song really hit harder. Carrying this trauma all these years and the cathartic feeling of letting it go in this song had to be such a release for her. Speak Now is an open letter album. Each song is an open letter to someone in her life telling them what she meant to say in person. And that’s Dear John. Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is a continuation of that for sure.

Dana Ries

I never noticed in Dear John, before Terry brought it up, that she says ,”Maybe it’s me and my blind optimism….BUT *MAYBE ITS YOU*.”

Traci

I also get stuck on the ending of this song. There’s plenty of times you think it should cut off or will be the last of it. But much like her inability to “let this go”-she can’t let the actual song end or “go” either. So it keeps rolling straight into “I can’t let this go..” idk if that made sense but that’s how I interpret the long and continuous outtro.

Becky (Bex)

I’m glad you can appreciate WCS, after listening to Dear John. It’s one of her best songs.

Kelsey

The should’ve is in Dear John! That’s why it’s not in this one!

Laura

Of COURSE we watched the whole video...more than once. Now...can. we. pppllllleeeeaaaassseeeee have So Long London and The Black Dog? LOVE YOU GUYS :-))))

Tamara

I am loving these longer uncut versions. you guys will definitely need to do a longer uncut video for All too well (10 Minute Version)

Natalie 💖

If i was a CHILD did it matter, if you got to wash your hands. Baby taylor 😭😭😭😭

Natalie 💖

also i like how when she says “give me back my girlhood it was mine firrrrssst” is similar to how a little kid cries for their toy back. emphasizing how she was still basically a child and he was a grown man. PETTY TAYLORRRRR.

Natalie 💖

Taylor released this at the same age that John was when he dated 19yo taylor. So now that she’s in her thirties she realizes how truly fucked up it was that a grown man messed with a 19 year old girl 🙃

Karo

Also I’m pretty sure Taylor wrote this at 32 or 30 something, so she was at his age from when they dated

maria martin

Your videos are outstanding and so enjoyable to watch!!! Love how you notice so many different things. It hits different listening to them back to back. DJ is a hard listen, despite the depth and beauty of the song. The blatant manipulation on his part but able to get away with it. K is right. She might have been an “adult.” Emotionally, she was YOUNG. And she idolized him. She is so vulnerable to share this. it’s healing for me to hear both. I love WCS…. How it kept her up at night (midnights). The pain. The rage. The sadness. The regret. The knowing of what it was years later. Coercion isn’t consent. “Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.” So relatable on so many different levels. The no getting stuck in the throat, the fawn response. Such a powerful song. I know so many women can relate. Also… watched the whole video. Keep doing them!! Thank you!

jazlyn mcginnis

TERRRY!!! STOP PAUSING IT ON THE BEST PARTS 😭😩😩😩🙏🙏🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾😭😭😭

Hannah

Dance with the devil is in reference to “sinning” and Give me back my girlhood I was mine first is implying that he took her virginity

Rikki Gardner

I love all these videos♥️ is there a way to put lyrics on screen as you go? I I dunno if possible but will help a new 3 yr swiftie!!!

Faith B

John Mayer ended up trying to deny they were ever together (referenced with the "then you tried to erase us") and John was a catalyst for some bad relationships she had after him (most notably Jake Gyllenhaal, age 29 when she was 21, who All Too Well was written about along with We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (ironically it's a pop song, which Jake was known to hate pop music)) and I Bet You Think About Me <3

Kristen

I love kaniyia she so cute😭😭

Alison MacDonald

The age gap is made worse when you realize that the human brain isn’t mature/done developing until 25 😐 By law she was an adult but emotionally she was still just a kid and he was a grown ass adult. Add to that the fact that being who he was put him into a position of power to manipulate her.

Alexis J.

While Speak Now was written and originally recorded when she was younger, Taylor's Versions are all recorded in her 30's

Deanna Standard

There’s no “should’ve” line in WCS because the should’ve line is in DJ.

Alexis J.

Also.... I am SEATED for when you react to All Too Well (10 Minute Version) off of Red TV!!!!

emily

when she sings this live!!! the emotion on her face!! 😭🫶🏻

Jess Keen

KANIYIA I’M SCREAMINGGGGGG. You are getting SOOOO good at analyzing the lyrics. I love seeing this so much you keep gettttttin it girl!!!!!!!

😭 this song and All Too Well is so healing for young me

I love it so much more when you have the backstory before you hear the song ❤️

You’re definitely a Swiftie when you call her by her full name…and you spelled Alison right too. Welcome to our beautiful “cultURE.” 🫶

Not K bringing back lyrics from Tolerate It. You guys turned into Swifties quick! I’m obsessed with this.

Madi

you guys need to do all too well 10 min version pleaaaaseee its like dear John on steroids. I also suggest watching the short film it helps to understand the lyrics a bit better

Jill G.

If yall thought this was crazy yall need to react to the live version she did of this after Speak Now came out! The anger on her face is UNMATCHED!!!

sarah m

BEGGING YALL TO WATCH DEAR JOHN LIVE FROM THE SPEAK NOW TOUR IT IS INCREDIBLE

Paige M.

Also- the reference to his song blurred lines- you kept lines blurry

Cassidy Clark

Someone may have already said this, but often, in the court system when men do something (especially college age/highschool) such as assault their punishments are lighter and the statement "he's a promising young man, we don't want to ruin his future" is said. To me, the promising grown man is saying that because she was technically an adult, and not underage, he was able to wipe his hands clean without being looked down upon. While if she had been just 2 years younger, the way he treated her and their relationship would be a crime. I could be wrong it's just how I have always taken it

Kelsey Michele

Mina ya you GET IT!!!! Going straight to tolerate it “ love should be celebrated “ YES GIRL!!!!! 👏 acing swifitie hood

Kelsey Michele

My heart hurts for baby Taylor speak now Tay 🥺 He took advantage of a CHILD. Girlhood verse destroys me everytime

Claire Whitehead

So I interpret the “if clarity’s in death then why won’t this die” line as the cliche of being on your deathbed and getting that retrospective of your life and suddenly understanding why everything that happened to you or that you went through was part of your experience - moreover how your experiences and responses to those experiences shaped you into the person you have become. She is pleading for understanding in this situation. The relationship (if you want to call it that) is long over, but she still cannot understand why it needed to be part of her life. Why did he do the things he did? Why did she go along with it? How could this traumatic experience have ever helped her grow? While she was in the midst of it, everything f felt so blissful, the pain was heaven, but she is left with an open wound that won’t seem to heal. Heartbreaking, relatable, and healing all at the same time.

Rach

You gotta find a way to watch it live from the speak now tour, her young angry voice adds so much more too it

Amber Carrier

“Living for the thrill of hitting you where it huuurts; give me back my girlhood it was mine fiiiirstttt” is one of her most powerful lyrics if you ask me. 😭

MelRays

Thank you guys for allowing all of us to experience hearing all of these songs for the first time again…. The joy it brings me to watch you guys really LISTEN to the lyrics, and not just hear it but listen…. Is priceless. Taylor is the professor of the masterclass, while still having the ability to reach and relate to all of us…. She is us and we are her. ❤️❤️ it was rare, I was there!! Glendale night 2!!!!

Amanda O'Toole

MMMF… 😜 So.. in Dear John she repeats “you should’ve known” over and over. In WCS, she approaches it from what she should’ve and would’ve done. It all ties together when you think of this perspective as well.

Katie Beyer

I will absolutely die when you do All Too Well( 10 minute version).

Callie Nickels

You know kaniya feeling it when she got that arm in the air

Kaitlyn

Just wait until you hear ATW10 min version

Jeannine Turner

I wish more people understood the complexity of Taylor's talent. She's so intentional with each Lyric, note, inflection, instrumentals, etc. I love your reactions. You two are a joy!

Karyssa Nevins

I really appreciate the religious symbolism she uses in WCS. This song feels like a prayer.

Cassandra

If no one has mentioned it, a Dear John letter is an old term for a break up letter.

Hailey Holcomb

And midnights the album WCS is from is about 13 sleepless nights in her life!

Gabby

It just clicked for me but the way the backing vocals in the beginning and the whole song sound like moaning ghosts (because a part of her still feels HAUNTED by it) 😱

Lauren L

John Mayer LIVED IN A CONVERTED CHURCH. Would've Could've Should've is end game.

Amy J

Dear John is one of my favorite Taylor songs ever. John was PISSED. Never even realized till now the parallel to his music, simply because I never knew his music well, but now I realize! Another musical piece I always loved is the drum beats behind the bridge as it builds sound like fireworks. Also important to note that at this time she was berated for writing about her exes and them getting mad for being called out. She was like this is album 3 yall have had fair warning and if guys don’t want me to write bad songs about them, they shouldn’t do bad things. Another reason “the girl in the dress wrote you a song, you should’ve known” totally eats.

Anna

I’m loving this dichotomy btwn you two where T is usually the one that hears the music first, like he tends to pick up on the musical nuances first, and K hears the lyrics first, gets the meaning, throws back to other lyrics in her discography. (I knew you were a reader from the get go, Kaniyia) But fr, imma need yall to drop an album, I know yall r playin but you have good voices and good ears for it. Also I cannot WAIT for All Too Well 10min version. Oh and then the music video, and the behind the scenes from the music video, omg the future is so bright!

Elizabeth Hughes

Guys correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't taylor 32/the age john was when she re recorded / released this version of Dear John? And I believe she was also 32 when she released midnights if that's the case as well which was when WCS was released right?

Kilene

Not her virginity. That's the scarf from All Too Well

Marissa Boyd

When Midnights came out I was fresh out of a divorce from an extremely manipulative and abusive partner. We have a son together so I’ll never be rid of him sadly. Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve made me sob. The feeling of wishing things could have been different if they wouldn’t have chosen YOU as their target. The drums in the back beating over and over are exactly how my brain feels sometimes.A relationship like that changes you in ways I can’t really describe. I’ll never get back the years wasted. I’ll never be able to fully give myself to anyone ever again. It’s truly devastating. I saw her in Nashville and I put it out of my mind that she would play this - I didn’t want to get my hopes up. SHE DID. I got to hear WCS in the pouring rain. It was such an incredible experience.

Margaret Russell

Would've, could've, Should've was my favourite on that album.

Margaret Russell

Should listen to the great war. That is about Joe too. I think.

Margaret Russell

You 2 seriously make my nights at work away from my family just a little bit bearable. I love watching you both genuinely enjoying taylor 💕

Margaret Russell

Best $5.50 I have spent in a long time ❤️

Cait

"Give me back my girlhood" made me SOB the 1st time I heard it

Alyssa

You gotta do the 10 min version of all too well!

Elizabeth

Interesting thing about WCS. Aaron Dessner said on a podcast that he wrote the song with Taylor when they were at the Grammys for Folklore in 2021. Guess who else was there? John Mayer. He was performing a song with Maren Morris.

Ray

The craziest part of WCS to me was realizing she only ever says would've and could've in the verses because "you should've known" from DJ

Natalie Shanider

When Taylor does a theme she does a THEME! The religious theme here is EATING!!!! I feel so bad for Taylor she went through that! Give her back her girlhood it was hers first!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Alyssa

If you guys ever do a live reaction on insta or something it should be to all too well the 10 min version that way you don’t have to condense it down or anything and everyone would literally TUNE IN for that because to get your guys reaction to that would be amazing.

Shannon

He haaaaaated dear john. He called it cheap songwriting smh.

Selina

I HADDD TO SUBBBBBBBB FOR THE SWIFTIE MUNCHIESSSSS

LeighAnn Cerra

I am so in love with how you're connecting the lyrics to other songs!! You are definitely true swifties. ❤️❤️

Hannah

Promising grown man = a play on the phrase “promising young woman” which is typically what someone says when the young woman in question has somehow been “tainted” or when that person is dead because promising is past tense - but a grown man should have known better. The paint splashing on him (him getting a bad rap for what he did to her) shouldn’t matter, he’s already grown into his promise

Hannah

The chaos of this beat to match how tumultuous of a time it was is so goooood

JustKayt

These songs are really sad. She set her most painful childhood trauma to an upbeat song in WCS. He groomed her and took advantage of her. Stole a part of her, that she can never get back. I love love that you go back at the end and just listen one last time! It sets you apart from other reactors!! The longer the videos the better! You guys are the best! 🤗

Brittany Super

The switch to “YOU should’ve known” in the end always punches me in the gut! He was much older and should’ve known better. Another meaning that comes to mind for me is that she said “The girl in the dress wrote you a song…you should’ve known.” She could also be saying he should’ve known she’d write a song about it! That was a running joke in pop culture at time…don’t date Taylor or she’ll write a song about you 🙄 There’s an interview with young Taylor when she says that if boys want her to stop writing songs about the bad things he they do, they should stop doing bad things 🤣

Yamillet Rivas

Dear John: As a mom and a woman, I cannot believe this song was written by a 19 year old TAYLOR SWIFT. I mean I can but how devastating that she experienced this so young. Yes this was 33 y/o Taylor signing this again, but jeez a baby wrote this and sang it at some point

Carissa Hunt

I’m so glad you guys quickly picked up on the guitar things being shade toward John Mayer.

Lizzie Joy

It's so sweet how you make sure to try and be respectful. Just know, we like you for being yourselves. If you make a slip and don't even notice, all we are gonna do is cheer about it 😂🫶🏻

Lizzie Joy

I feel like this song really highlights how things done to us in our girlhood, leave us with the stain of shame within ourselves for decades. And how frustrating it is, that even when you're older and can see SO clearly you didn't deserve it, THEY should be the ones feeling ashamed. And yet, even with that hindsight, we still feel the shame and sadness, and the loss of ourselves and our innocence.

Olivia

What I love about this song that I’m not sure if many people get is in the military when you say goodbye to someone, like you’re breaking up with them, you write a letter and it’s referred to as a “Dear John” letter! It’s just genius on Taylor’s part!

EmilyZ

Does anyone wonder if Jennifer Aniston listens to these and understands? Bc they both dated him! 😂

EmilyZ

Omg did she say she took the matches to refer to the song “slow dancing in a burning room” !?

Nikki

I really want all too well 10mv PLEASE!

Deserae Nicole

What’s more amazing is she wrote everything song on speak now by herself.

Adrian Voss

DEAR JOHN OUT JOHN MAYERS JOHN MAYER

Barbara Lopez

Hits harder when you realize she was baby taylor when she wrote dear john

Barbara Lopez

Leaving out should've was intentional! She said should've enough in dear john

victoria t

Dear John is THE breakup song

Morgan

I think almost all of her albums won a Grammy 🤭🙃 MMMF!!!

Morgan

“If I was some paint did it splatter, on a promising grown man” - meaning did I tarnish your perfect reputation by you dating me? Did me outing you with Dear John ruin your rep you had going for you? Also hinting at narcissism- narcissistic people get mad at their victim’s reactions, they make the victims reaction seem bigger than the problem the narcissist created in the first place. She could be saying, “if you don’t want me to have a reaction, then don’t screw up in the first place”

Morgan

“If you would’ve blinked” - meaning if he wouldn’t have pursued her, she would have left him alone and none of it would have happened

Jordan Bauman

Bigger than the whole sky ties into this also - in that song she’s saying goodbye to the pure “little” girl she could’ve been - “I’m never gonna meet - what COULDVE been, WOULDVE been, what SHOULDVE been you”..

Kristin

I love that you're drawing parallels between songs. CERTIFIED SWIFTIES.

Becca

If you’re listening to Taylor’s version it came out in 2023 so it’s not younger Taylor. But the 2010 version definitely sounds different and younger

Megan

Anyone feel like we need to start a fundraiser for them to go to the Era’s Tour live?? 🤣😍 I need a reaction video for them at the concert. 🙌🏻 I just heard Dear John at Wembley— and I’m watching this thinking…. MAN, I want them there to experience this. They give all the feels.

Olivia Toscano-Liscinsky

not sure if anyone explained this already, but would've could've should've, the reason she never says a line about should've is because she said it already in dear john that she shoud've known.

🐍🖤 Shannon 🖤🐍

MMMF!! This is one of her most unhinged songs from the guitar solo to the style of the song to the lyric 'the girl in the dress wrote you a song, you shoulda known' - god, i love that woman!! Fun Fact: Jessica Simpson also dated John Mayer and in her memoir she describes almost the exact same type of relationship - gaslighting, narcissism, confusion, moodiness, ETC. Lolz that he couldn't sue - he shoulda known 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mélanie Broudissou

Love the Dean John live from the speak now you should react ❤️

Erin Beale Parris

I joined today just to watch WCS. This song speaks so deeply to me. At 16 i started dating the man I’d marry at 22, he wanted a divorce at 37 with two little girls ages 8 & 6. He remarried the other woman within a year. This song rocked my core in every way possible. I’ve been waiting to see yalls reaction because as a woman who gave up her entire “girlhood” for a man she trusted with her life, I’ll forever wish I’d never danced with the devil. ❤️

Casey Heaney

I’m a little late to the party, so someone might have already explained this. But for the “promising grown man” line, society tends to downplay the indiscretions of men, especially when they are young (teens/early 20s). The phrase is usually “promising YOUNG man”. Like oh we can’t punish him because he’s just young and made a mistake, but he has his whole life ahead of him. Even if what he did is horrible, it’s just a “mistake”. He didn’t mean it. We can’t ruin his life over this ONE thing. Even if that one thing ruined the life of the girl. So Taylor is making it a point to say that society downplayed the fact that this grown ass man chose to date (and take the virginity of) a literal child. No one held him accountable and called out just how gross this was. It was Taylor’s fault. SHE seduced HIM. And then she called him out in Dear John. And instead of it hurting John’s career, people took aim at Taylor. SHE is the paint that splattered on HIM. F*ck the patriarchy!

Lindsay

I think the paint part is about how he was “hurt” that she went after his reputation when everyone already knew who he was to women

Kristie Scribner

Not sure if anyone already said this, but a "Dear John" letter is when a woman wrote to her boyfriend/fiancé informing him that she was leaving. The term originated during WWII when it was reported that soldiers received these letters while they were stationed abroad. Another reason Mayer had no grounds to sue- it'c common vernacular.

Gee Vee

right at the end of WCS, instead of ugly crying, it like she's ugly singing, she's really just putting all that sad anger into it.

Ashley Z

I think this is the only song she actually calls someone out by their name 😂

Colibri

Oh, you KNOW it's good when Terry takes his glasses off! This is a gut-wrenching back-to-back set to do, but the heartbreak of Dear John is balanced by the righteous fury of WCS. SO good! I'm glad you decided to record your reactions again for WCS as I'm sure it hit different with context.

aidagg

the girlhood line in WCS its the most heartwrenching line ive ever heard and one of my favorites of all time it just makes me cry every f time i hear it

DrEmily

And JM (47 yo) is now dating Kiernan Shipka (24 yo) smh 🤦🏻‍♀️

Emily B

I love looking back at these and smiling knowing you learned to never interrupt the bridge in the future. 😂❤️

Amanda

Sometimes watching y’all’s vids is like hearing these songs for the first time again!! I’ve heard them a million times and am a longtime Swiftie, but I always learn something new or hear something new after seeing your reactions and interpretations! So thank you for that amazing gift 🥰🫶🏼💜

Katrina Thomas

I don’t think the girlhood line has to be her virginity, I take it as that turning point in life when that protective bubble is broken and you become an adult with the realisation that life will do you bad. She had so much and was protected in some way from real life - but also shit upon by the music industry - with her mum always there, she talks about how her mum asks her if she was mad, like it caused problems in their relationship.

Ashley Castellano

The best part about this song is that she wrote dear John when she was 19 which is arguably a lyrical masterpiece. But dear John is an infamous letter girlfriends/wives would write their partners who are in the army to let them know they’re leaving them. Those letters got coined dear John letters. Which is why she got away with naming this song this. It’s a “goodbye letter”. John Mayer was pissed about this song. He said in an interview “I think it’s a really cheap shot for someone to write a song about someone else and rub their hands together and say wow I can’t wait till they get a load of this”. And then he wrote slow dancing in a burning room, which is rumored to be about Taylor, where he literally calls taylor a bitch. And then years later he writes paper dolls which is also rumored to be about Taylor. John was labeled as being a womanizer and a narcissist. From these two songs and what his exes have to say about him and how he tries to play the victim, I kinda believe it’s true.

morbidbarbie

The often say the women who accuse men are "damaging a promising young man"

no its becky

Terry you are the worst damn pauser ever hahaha

Alexandria Eddy

Just to clarify, she wrote this at 19 but this recording is her older. All the rerecordings she did in the last few years.

I’m not dramatic

Also goodbye/breakup letters are traditionally known as “dear John” letters. He was dumb for that. Imagine being his big age, dating a 19 year old performer/song writer and then trying to sue and then writing a song. About a 19 year old. Ew. John. Just ew.

Sayra

They recorded a song for his album called "Half of my Heart," which was about how he'll never give 100% in a relationship 😂 "Down the road, later on, you will hate that I never gave more to you than half of my heart"...this is the down the road for TS

Daniela vélez

You have to see “dear John”live version of the Speak Now World tour. Its flawless! 💜

katlyn rikard

Begging for Dear John Live from the Speak Now world tour. 🙏 I promise you will never sing this song again without seeing that performance in your head. It’s everything!

Amanda Blondie

She doesn’t say should’ve in would of could of because in dear John she says you should’ve know through the whole song…that killed me when someone put that together for me

Lua

I just LOVE WCS. It's too painful and something else I can't even describe it

JustKayt

John Mayer was a 32 year old man, and Taylor was a 19 year old girl. A teenager. She is singing about him grooming her and preying on her and the damage it has done throughout her whole life. Sometimes you can’t separate the musician from the music. He’s a predator. He should’ve known, not her. She was a child. 😭

Ashlee Shannon

I know I’m late to this but please also listen to John’s song to Taylor, Paper Doll. The guy may be trash but he can write a damn good song and it’s fun listening for his references to her also

Emily S

Guys hear me out. A crewneck of “who says that?” “Taylor.” I’d wear it.

Emily S

Anyone who’s ever been in a relationship where they felt like they had to walk on eggshells not to rock the boat, gets this song in their core. “The girl in the dress cried the whole way home…” I’ve been there Taylor 😭❤️

Emily S

Let me tell you something. One of these days when I’m listening to would’ve could’ve should’ve in the car I’m going to get pulled over for going too hard

Emily S

I went through the worst breakup of my life this summer and it’s taken me months to realize how much he was like John. I think if you’ve been in a toxic relationship, would’ve could’ve should’ve hits so deep… ugh. Tay Tay gets it 😭❤️

Yatchi Lucio

This happened to me too I was 19 and my so called “boyfriend “ which now would be more like situationship cause I don’t think he actually wanted me as a girlfriend but kept me anyways cause he was my 1st for everything, Everything! He didn’t even told me his correct Age, he was prob. 24/25 at the time I THINK. He was bad, like lock him up cause he couldnt keep his hand 🖐🏽 to himself. I’m good now. He was escorted out of the US…lol. That was my SIGHN! Cause I had always ‘prayed’ I guess for the universe/God to like let me know if we are just not good together. It answered. I let him go so FAST! This moment was to help me let him go and I took it, NEVER looked back. And I thank God everyday for that. Luv WCS ❤️

Rebecca Sortor

It's about losing her faith. She lost Jesus.

Yatchi Lucio

Also you totally skipped the best part of the song at least for me, “Give me back my Girlhood, It was MINE First!” Like just didn’t even pay it no mind, that is the heart of the whole song( my Opinion) anyways great vid luv you guys 😍🥰

Shannon Leigh Dixon

When I watched this video back in July it was mine first time hearing either one of these songs. It was so emotional for me. There is video of Taylor performing DJ live when she was younger. You guys should definitely check it out.

Aria

The promising grown man line reminds me of the way it's used in the movie promising young woman, how a promising young man can't have their life and reputation ruined by a "childish mistake". Like the whole thing with Taylor couldn't put dirt on this promising artist career, even if he's a whole grown man with a well started career.

Cara

MMMF

Linda Thomas

I wish I couldn't relate to these songs the way I do lol

Monica Torres

Fun fact after speak now was released Taylor was asked in an interview if anyone she’d ever written about had been mad at her and she said she once dated a guy who emailed her and asked her to promise she’d never wrote about their breakup and she said she told him she wouldn’t and then she laughed and said he was angry when he realized she did write a song about him. Then you get the final words of dear John “the girl in the dress wrote you a song, you should’ve known.”

Stacey

Dear John also references a “dear John” letter that you write to breakup with someone

✨Annie✨

“Tomb won’t close…her virginity”

Sarah Chattin

Thanks for the reaction…one of my favorite songs…you guys are funny

Lauren

Love the Nashville reference!! Such a great show with great original music. Y’all should react to the music from that show. Lennon Stella has really good music also (aside from Nashville). Also…John Mayer is a fan of hers. He was seen at one of her live shows (I THINK)!!

Teri

She didn’t lose anything. He STOLE it from her, And their lays the problem. And then when she says gods honest truth that the pain was heaven, what she means is that with psychological/emotional abuse an abuser will give you all these wonderful things in the Beginning. And then what they do to get you addicted and hooked on them is they will withhold themselves to make you feel bad about yourself and unworthy, and it’s a intention mind fuck strategy like an addiction. And it’s extremely damaging. The most damaging of all mental abuse tactics.

Teri

Thank God that Taylor only dated him for a few months. Some of us were lured back more than once and it repeated for years and years. That’s how messed up the mind games are.

Gabby

This video is semi old now but she never says "should've" in WCS because in her relationship with John, there wasn't anything she "shouldve" done differently because SHE was basically a child. He was the adult. He SHOULDVE walked away instead of taking advantage of her youth and naivete. She was the victim in that relationship. She COULD'VE and WOULD'VE been better off if he hadn't pursued her at 19.

Katharine Roetering

My surprise song in Minneapolis 🫶 love watching older videos and seeing your minds blown in real time at how diverse her catalog is

jennifer rice

If y'all want to make a really interesting deep dive into Taylor and John: They did a duet on his album called "Half of My Heart". (2009) And his song "Edge of Desire" is reportedly referencing his moral conundrum about her (2009) Her song "Ours" (2010) is supposedly about John. The lyrics "I love the gap between your teeth, and I love the riddles that you speak, and any snide remarks by my father about your tattoos". " Dear John" (2010), then his song Paper Doll (2013) , and finally her " Would've Could've, Should've" (2023)
